To not want this bigot to become editor of the Independent?

Bananaketchup · 13/02/2010 14:20

Rod Liddle is front runner to become the new editor of The Independent. Amongst his many pearls of wisdom is the 'fact' that

'The vast majority of women with very small children are useless at their jobs'.

Please come here to email the new owner of the Independent and ask him not to appoint Rod Liddle.

I won't buy it again if he's editor...

tiredlady · 13/02/2010 14:28

I can't stand him.

Idiot.

squeaver · 13/02/2010 14:30

There's a quite a few female journos saying they won't write for the paper if he gets the job e.g. Suzanne Moore, India Knight.

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 13/02/2010 14:36

Weapons grade twat. I won't read it again if he's editing it.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 13/02/2010 14:48

NOOOOOOOOO!

Thanks for posting this!

WestCountryDad · 13/02/2010 15:51

I might just start buying it again if he does become editor.

The Independent used to be just that in its thinking. However, in recent years it has become dominated by a certain type of smug 'liberal'* thinking. I'm sure I won't agree with all/most of the pieces penned by Rod, but at least it will be taking the Indy back to its roots.

I use the term liberal above according to its 'I wholehartedly support everyone's right to freedom of expression as long as they agree with me' definition.

kinnies · 13/02/2010 15:55
Hmm
ilovemydogandmrobama · 13/02/2010 16:05

Think you will find freedom of expression doesn't apply to Rod Liddle.

scottishmummy · 13/02/2010 16:05

vile journalist.his articles are dull and deliberately provocative.smacks of trying too hard

Heracles · 13/02/2010 16:07

That'll be you mistaking "independant thinking" with "being a loud-mouthed twat" there. It's a common problem...

AliGrylls · 13/02/2010 16:10

I would be glad if India Knight doesn't write for them. I find her really annoying and far too much in love with herself. In fact it would probably make me buy it. Not read very much of Liddle although I know DH and MIL really like him.

Rindercella · 13/02/2010 16:12

If you're on Facebook, have a look here

scottishmummy · 13/02/2010 16:13

janet street-porter called him "a repulsive shagger"

2005 he got a caution for assaulting his 22yo pg girlfriend alicia monckton

his would you shag harriey harman article was risible

vile man

EdgarAllenSnow · 13/02/2010 16:21

'weapons grade twat'

i like

maybe you should write for the Independant.

Rindercella · 13/02/2010 16:46

There was a piece in the Mail (sorry) a couple of weeks ago about Liddle's comments on a Millwall football club forum. Unsurprisingly, some of his comments were really quite vile - probably all the more so as he assumed he was anonymous.

PollyTroll · 13/02/2010 16:50

Some of the comments on the mfc forum were really I'm all for provocateurs, but there is a bleeding limit. Liddle just comes across as a sixth-former who can't tell the difference between worthy and unworthy targets.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 13/02/2010 16:51

Oh he's so boring. I don't read the Independent anyway because it is boring.

BigBadMummy · 13/02/2010 16:55

I have found the Independent recently up its own arse.

DH reads it but I can't stand it.

If Liddle becomes editor I shall refuse to buy it.

I would rather he read the Daily Mail.

larrygrylls · 13/02/2010 17:56

Rod Liddle is great. He punctures a lot of self satisfied politically correct egos. He is definitely not an idiot in any definition of the word that I know. If you read his full length articles in the Speccie, you will find that he is politically very perspicacious. He is very much right wing, in favour of small government and individual liberty. Not everyone's cup of tea but a great antidote to the interfering nanny state. I have no idea about his private life, nor that much interest.

I would, however, be amazed if he were made editor of the Indie. The Indie is a smug broadsheet for those left of centrists who think they are intellectually superior to readers of the Times (my fave, admittedly the Xword and Doku do have something to do with it). Nothing wrong with that in itself if it weren't so dull! I can see that Liddle's values and the Indie's values are polar opposites, hence my view that he would be a v poor choice for the editor.

As for India Knight, she is exactly the kind of ego which need puncturing. She is one of the smuggest columnists out there. She thinks that whatever her values at the time are the only ones, although they frequently change. I remember reading her column ages ago where she raged against gym members as narcissists with shallow values. A couple of years later, she has joined a gym and is writing a diet book. Fair enough, she changed her mind. However, she then railed against anyone overweight as lazy. As for her wonderful kids whom she shamelessly uses to press her journalistic ends and her perfect amicable divorce...well, enough said.

She is intellectually several levels below Rod Liddle, who is always, at least, self consistent.

scottishmummy · 13/02/2010 18:01

rod assaulting his pg girlfriend was not so great

BariatricObama · 13/02/2010 18:02

who buys the independent anyway? surely its demographic is self centred london types.

i really don't give a flying feck and emplying this twat as its editor is the final nail in the coffin. i give the indie 18 months before it closes

FrankieValli · 13/02/2010 18:02

id do him

MarineIguana · 13/02/2010 18:03

Hi private life does matter in that things that have come out about him reveal him to be a bigoted, sexist twat who physically attacks women (well and men actually I thought - didn't he get into some twattish fight with a man too?). It's a classic example of you're an establishment meeja schmoozer there are people who will conveniently overlook that stuff, but if he were editor of a broadsheet he'd have a lot of influence.

I know someone who worked on the Today Programme when he was editor and they had the hardest time with him, and said he was an appalling boss.

He should be just shunned.

FrankieValli · 13/02/2010 18:04

lol at shunned

scottishmummy · 13/02/2010 18:04

do him?
as in fuck him
or batter him

hope the latter rather than the former
