To not want this bigot to become editor of the Independent?

Bananaketchup · 13/02/2010 14:20

Rod Liddle is front runner to become the new editor of The Independent. Amongst his many pearls of wisdom is the 'fact' that

'The vast majority of women with very small children are useless at their jobs'.

Please come here to email the new owner of the Independent and ask him not to appoint Rod Liddle.

funnily enough is yap is shut about about the caution he received for assaulting his pg girlfriend

larrygrylls · 14/02/2010 08:00

Dittany,

In his writings, as opposed to his private life (which none of use really know anything about), can you show evidence, such as a link, to his soi-disant misogynist views?

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 14/02/2010 11:06

Would he ask about shagging a man - I don't think so - his comments about Harriet Harman are purely based on her being a woman
www.spectator.co.uk/essays/5244693/harriet-harman-is-either-thick-or-criminally-disingenuous.thtml

Women should be diveded in to those who are whores and those who are not:

"the vast majority of women with very small children are, by their own admissions, useless at their jobs"
www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/article530084.ece

I could go on...

larrygrylls · 14/02/2010 11:25

Bonjour,

None of them are sexist per se. They are written in what superficially looks like sexist language but they are making subtle points. Of course, choosing the language he does, he risks sounding sexist and misogynist when small parts of his articles are quoted out of context.

The first article is about Harriet Harman, not women in general, and the unintended consequences of her "equality" bill and the second concerns not being prescriptive about dress code. The third, and possibly most controversial, is about whether the current maternity laws are about equality or spill over into positive discrimination on a pro woman basis. Not everyone's opinion, but he is allowed his and it is certainly not misogyny.

They are intelligent articles, admittedly cloaked in "blokey" language which will not appeal to all members of the "fairer" sex, although they do to plenty of them. His articles make their points using heavy irony. Of course, if you take irony literally, you will find all sorts of "isms" everywhere you look.

MaggieMaeve · 14/02/2010 11:29

thanks bananaketchup. Done, with pleasure! what a misogynist slob that guy is.

Bananaketchup · 14/02/2010 13:57

larrygrylls are you serious? How is Rod Liddle's use of 'what superficially looks like sexist language' different from umm... sexist language?

Maybe I am looking too hard for 'isms'... [digs out wellies and big net for an isms hunt]

Rod Liddle is like Jeremy Clarkson.

They are both utter wankers.

FrankieValli · 14/02/2010 14:03

ive had Clarkson
all effort
no results.

probono · 14/02/2010 14:04

he's obnoxious but probably the paper's only hope

shock appointment etc

OrmRenewed · 14/02/2010 14:09

Vile man. Hands off my paper!

olderandwider · 14/02/2010 14:16

Rod Liddle is a good columnist precisely because he divides his audience so much. Publishers want to sell papers, and vanilla-flavoured "on the one hand on the other hand" scribblers don't do that. I don't agree with most of his views but I still like reading him to help sharpen up my own views on an ishoo.

Oh, and The Independent is unreadable so perhaps he could change that?

Nancy66 · 14/02/2010 14:19

The Indie is dying on its arse - losing readers at an alarming rate, operating on a massive loss and in serious danger of going under.

I imagine the appointment of a 'shock' editor is a last ditch attempt to save it.

olderandwider · 14/02/2010 14:29

Agree with that. Perhaps Sarah Palin could be Deputy Ed?

OrmRenewed · 14/02/2010 14:35

"Oh, and The Independent is unreadable so perhaps he could change that? "

In what way?

TBH if it does go under I am going to be stuck for a paper to read.

olderandwider · 14/02/2010 14:45

Well, I don't read the Indie anymore because it is to me, err, unreadable. When I last looked at it (picked up a neighbour's copy) I just found it bland and boring, just lacking a sense of a true voice and viewpoint.
