Not to carry a handbag

LEMprefersdogstocats · 11/02/2010 23:27

I have never ever carried a handbag - i would only bloody lose it im sure.

Why do you need one? I have pockets in my jeans, purse in one, keys in other, phone in one of them. Probably really unsafe for keys in pockets though.

But why do women feel they need to carry around bloody great holdalls? with their life in them? Then there is the wee bag that can't fit much in anyway - WHY????

I don't get it- i am assuming that as i seem to be in the minority of one, that i am some sort of freak

when I'm going out to the cinema or to the pub for a drink or to the supermarket I will often only not take a handbag - agree with you money/keys/phone can go in pockets, don't need anything else

thenameiwantedwastaken · 11/02/2010 23:33

Yanbu if you're happy without a handbag! Must say I used to not bother then was given one as a gift and much preffered it as could fit in a big wallet and some reading material and I looked better in my jeans without all the bulges in my pockets.

I think the big holdalls were in fashion cos they make your bum look small in comparison, LOL!

WeddingDaze · 11/02/2010 23:34

I hardly ever use a handbag, you can't lose a pocket!

Pozzled · 11/02/2010 23:35

Well I don't have handbags. And for pub etc thats fine. But then if I'm going anywhere for any length of time I normally have a small rucsac type bag- different style and contents but I guess it's the same principle. I must have a book and a bottle of water to go any distance- can't fit those in my pockets! Oh and usually a snack, and some tissues...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/02/2010 23:38

YANBU if everything you need will fit in your pockets.

I wear a skirt or a dress 80% of the time so no pockets, therefore I need a bag. Because I'm used to having it, it wouldn't occur to me to try and decant things into pockets on the days I have them - for a start my purse is too big to fit in a pocket!

I can't fit all my stuff in my pockets! Wish I could!

ouryve · 11/02/2010 23:55

I'm an habitual pocket stuffer, but I do use a small over the shoulder handbag when I'm trying to look a bit more respectable than the loon-in-waterproofs I tend to be on weekdays!

(I still have full pockets, mind)

pooexplosionsareimproving · 12/02/2010 00:51

You can't get a book in your pocket, and who leaves the house without a book?

LEMprefersdogstocats · 12/02/2010 07:25

I think the big holdalls were in fashion cos they make your bum look small in comparison, LOL!

In that case i'd need a sodding suitcase!

YANBU, but I generally carry one depending on circumstances. Many of my clothes don't have pockets, and I don't like bulges/fear they may flal out/having to extract everything before I sit down. If I'm just popping to the shops or whatever I'll just take a bank card and phone.

But during the day I have to have one, I carry a pencil case, notebook, bottle of water, diary etc etc.

ShauntheSheep · 12/02/2010 08:48

No handbag here either in general. Dont see the need for one at all. If we are going out and I'm dressed up with no pockets (very rare occurance) then dp gets to carry all the bits and bobs. For work I have a backpack. I do have a 'long walk/pub afterwards' bag with long across the body strap that contains my book and a selection of dd's art stuff and other bits and bobs with I suppose could be classed as a handbag.

Fimblehobbs · 12/02/2010 08:51

My stuff doesn't fit in my pockets. In fact a lot of the time I don't have pockets. So thats why I have a handbag.

LittleAngelicRose · 12/02/2010 08:53

I didn't carry one for years, it all fitted in my jeans, but once you have kids you end up with more stuff, packs of wipes, spare nappy, small toys, and then you just accumulate as life catches up with you, toothpicks, nail files, a book, camera, lip balm, handcream, it all adds up and the handbag ends up weighing a ton. School run then it all goes in pockets, but for work that looks ridiculous so I need a bag. And it increases options for birthday and Christmas presents.

I stuff pockets if I have them but still have small DC's so need a bag to carry all their crap as well.
I also carry my crochet with me everywhere so need room for that too!

minxofmancunia · 12/02/2010 09:07

yanbu although during the day I have to carry an enormous one, purse, phone, sunglasses, keys, snack for dd, water for both of us, wipes, cheque book, book, diary, lip gloss/balm and crayons/sticker book for dd. this requires a bag! Not even going to go into ds baby paraphernalia esp now ff rather than bf!

However at night I stuff bank card, phone and front door key into pockets. Won't take bag out at night in M/CR. Makes you too much of a target for muggers.

slug · 12/02/2010 09:43

It is one of my major gripes that women's clothes don't have pockets!!! The weekends are fine when I can wear jeans, but at work I wear skirts and dresses, most of which don't have pockets.

I have a small, leather backpack style handbag which means I can carry a purse, work and home keys, a book, my reading glasses my mobile phone, a swiss army knife, my migraine drugs, my work pass and Oyster card and the detrius of having children (coloured pencils, tissues, plasters, Calpol sachets, random items picked up and presented to me etc) while keeping both hands free.

agedknees · 12/02/2010 09:46

I use a small across body style handbag. It is great. Leaves your hands/arms free, is very safe and does not leave me with bulges (I have enough natural bulges as it is).

But YANBU. It is your choice.

Morloth · 12/02/2010 09:53

Keys, wallet, phone and oyster card. No need for a handbag here. If going out for the day or to do shopping I will take my backpack.

Fimblehobbs · 12/02/2010 09:56

Oh yes thats another reason for having a handbag, to stuff it full of bags for life so I don't need bags at shop checkouts. Of course my handbag goes in my bike basket, its like some sort of russian doll of receptacles.

PuppyMonkey · 12/02/2010 09:59

I have a new coat with lots of pockets and I thought a-ha! No more handbags. Then I went to Tesco the other day and thought I'd lost my purse., Had security checking the whole store, virtually accused the entire coffee shop of being on the rob, had a screaming toddler wanting to get away during the crisis. Then I looked in the lapel pocket and found my purse in there

I take a handbag now, it's less embarrassing.

Lomond · 12/02/2010 10:02

I don't like having bulky/bulging pockets (perhaps I should get a smaller phone!) so usually carry a bag, however I do like the freedom of going out without one, was at a gig a few weeks ago and it was great to bypass the huge queue for bag checks!

Ziggurat · 12/02/2010 10:04

But they're so pretty!!

I just don't want to walk around looking even more pregnant than I am, with shit stuffed in my pockets. Plus as soon as you add a mobile phone, book, water to the mix, it's too much to carry.

Changing bags on the other hand - I do not get all the fuss over those, and just put stuff in my handbag.
