Freeloadcycler out to take piss from bladder itself, as well as furnishings for entire house!

Do tell me if this isn't the most cheeky "wanted" you have ever seen:

we are just moving house so we need double beds, single beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bathroom cabinets, table, chairs, plates, pots, etc
please if posible send a picture with the item. we would like to collect asap but if it's the right item we can wait
thank you very much

I feel like posting a "Wanted" of my own:

"Wanted: to know whether anyone is going to offer anything to this ... person"

There have been some requests for furniture for women who have been re-housed, and that is quite fair. But if this person is someone like that, s/he's certainly not mentioned it, and anyway, it is of a piece with many other posts I have seen recently. This group is going mad.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 11/02/2010 10:44

yep i agree. when we have stuff we want rid of people would be doing us a favour by taking it away! that sounds patronising but its the truth

Pheebe · 11/02/2010 12:10

comixminx and others - you are SO missing the point. Freecycle was never set up to be FAIR or to REDISTRIBUTE anything. It is what it is - a route for people to get rid of unwanted items that may be of use to other people so they don't end up in landfill. Thats where its ethics start and end. Its the users (generally the givers) who seem so desperate to feel they are performing some sort of social philanthropy by only giving their cast offs to 'worthy' individuals.

Doublebuggy · 11/02/2010 12:15

Pheebe - you so right.

I hate these freecycle threads. Everyone gets on their high horse.

I love freecycle. I can get of stuff that is cluttering up my house without sending to landfill.

I don't care who it goes to. I don't even care if they manage to sell it. I just want it out of my house.

DarrellRivers · 11/02/2010 12:19

Surely you are just grateful someone has managed to take away what ever you are trying to get rid of.

pooexplosionsareimproving · 11/02/2010 12:19

Yeah, how cheeky, not wanting any old shite to furnish their home, being poor and all they should take any crap that the charitable donors want rid of.

They are doing you a favour, not the other way around. They are saving you the hassle and cost of disposing of your old stuff. They don't have to grovel or tip their cap to you.

BAFE · 11/02/2010 12:20

Maybe it's a woman and her kids who had to flee their domestic violence situation hastily, like my mum had to

YABU OP - can you answer me honestly? Why did you join up to freecycle? I don't get people like you?

DarrellRivers · 11/02/2010 12:21

Freecycle=it's a two-way process
That's why it works

fembear · 11/02/2010 12:26

"we are just moving house so we need double beds, single beds, wardrobes"

Note that everything is in the plural. That is not some needy soul just setting up home or someone fleeing DV. That's someone taking the piss.

BAFE · 11/02/2010 12:29

I agree, on this occassion asking for "double beds" is a bit odd.

nickelbabe · 11/02/2010 12:34

the mods have posts on stating that you have to ask nicely and be nice.

they also say that you should offer an equal amount to what you want (that's monitered on ours)

asking for photos of the stuff is greedy, asking for multiples of everything is greedy.

ifyou ask nicely for one thing, you are more likely to get two or more offerers.

and if it doesn't suit your decor, then you can paint it or put a throw on it.

but if i were moving into a new home with no furniture, i'd be grateful for what i could get until i could afford better stuff.

when i moved into a home with my ex, we brought the beds we slept in at our parents' houses, a rocking chair and office chair (which were our lounge furniture) and a table (which had been my sewing table before!)and 2 chairs from his parents' loft.

then we bought other stuff as we could afford it.

nickelbabe · 11/02/2010 12:35

and no, we didn't have a wardrobe: our first wardrobe was a £6.99 temporary clothes rail from Argos.

OtterInaSkoda · 11/02/2010 12:36

Perhaps they have a teenager or a parent that lives with them? Perhaps it was a typo? I don't think people should have to justify their asks tbh.

Marne · 11/02/2010 12:49

I don't see what the problem is? Yes they asked for photo's but maybe thats because they don't want people offloading total crap onto them (which some people do to save themselves a trip to the tip).

I am a freecycler and have asked for a few things including a special needs pushchair for my dd2 (i didn't get one but it was worth a try as i can't afford to buy one and NHS refuse to fund one). At the moment i need a sofa but i would want to see a photo of it first as it could be just as f*cked as the one i have got or might not fit in with the rest of the room.

Maybe they have scrapped together all there money for a deposit/rent on a house and have very little left to furnish it?

gagamama · 11/02/2010 12:51

Sounds like a tightarse enterprising buy-to-letter trying to furnish some properties on the cheap. Why would you need so many things... I mean bathroom cabinets?!

Blanchet · 11/02/2010 13:22

Never used Freecycle so maybe I'm talking rubbish, but surely the goods don't have to come from the same person, and nobody has to give them anything. Why should they not just list all the things they would be happy to take off someone's hands? And why not ask for a picture when they're going to be living with the furniture permanently? I wouldn't buy/ necessarily accept to pick up furniture that I hadn't seen.

PeedOffWithNits · 11/02/2010 13:32

oh some of the posts on our group make me LOL and in equal measure

"really need a changing bag, must be black to match my buggy"

"really need a new TV - 42 inches or bigger"

" really need a fridge, freezer and bed - no transport so you must be able to deliver"

and the lack of manners in some of the posts, unbelievable - and I expect these very people are the ones who would slag off freecycle cos "I never get anything off there" - without asking themselves why. I remember polite people and will pick their name out from all other wants to see if I can help them again. likewise peopel who have been rude or not turned up etc, i delete without reading their posts now

we have one member who posts wanted posts EVERY DAY

LEMprefersdogstocats · 11/02/2010 13:40

Well they are cheeky alright, but i would rather give my stuff to a cheeky fecker than throw it away.

I don't understand freecycle - ive gone on the website and its like the fecking masons, i cant get my foot in the door, obv doing something wrong.

LEMprefersdogstocats · 11/02/2010 13:43

LMAO at 42" or bigger TV!

victoriascrumptious · 11/02/2010 15:07

I thought the point of freecycle was to save stuff from ending up in landfills? If so what's the point in getting sniffy about other peoples asks? You can always ignore.

LittleMrsHappy · 11/02/2010 15:24

Sorry but free cycle is NOT for people who NEED stuff, Im sure most people DONT NEED a TV cabinet etc..... is a site for purley WANTS!

and its for people to get rid of their JUNK, Im not to sure why your bothered OP, if people are giving things away for free and they want them, then really what is the problem!

Freecycle is just that, it to get rid of things for free!

LEMprefersdogstocats · 11/02/2010 16:03

I agree with you little mrs happy - there are organisations out there to provide furniture for those in need, of course if you need some furniture then freecycle would be a good place to start. I needed a new cooker - i looked on freecycle before i bought one.

I would be asking for pics too because i woudlnt want to travel ages, arrange a van etc only to find that the stuff is falling apart.

This does remind me of some very cynical "recycling" that happened to us recently.

We took an old rocking horse to the tip - it was potentially collectable i suppose, but nothing special, an old chad valley soft one - we bought it at an antiques fair for a tenner. Anyway - it was in pretty poor nick then, DD got her use out of it but it started to become unsafe. It eventually found itself into the garden - it got rained on, it ended up in a big lot of rubbish whilst waiting to go to the tip - in short, it was MINGING!!! It had algae growing on it!! The other week - DP and I saw it sat outside an antique shop that charge ridiculous money for what only can be described as trashy chic - we were pissing ourselves. We were in the car so we couldnt ask the price tag - but hey, at least it didnt go to land fil - i just shudder to think about what sort of germs were festering in it

spiderpig8 · 11/02/2010 16:10

I don't get the problem. If you haven't a van and are wanting rid of furniture then you would be pleased if people could take it off your hands surely

chopstheduck · 11/02/2010 16:19

We get quite a few on ours that are being rehoused out of refuge and request everything. I've been in that situation, so I don't blame them in the least. When I came out of refuge I got rehoused in a flat with no cutains or carpets and given £300 grant to buy literally everything with, from cots for my babies, to plates and cutlery to eat with.

The photos request is a bit cheeky, but like people have said, people do put crap on there. I collected a high sleeper once, that was really a bunk bed with the bottom bunk knocked out, and no screws (cos it stands up fine on its own ). That had to go straight to the tip. It's always a bit pot luck with what you are collecting. I've had some fab stuff, and some utter crap!

pooexplosionsareimproving · 11/02/2010 16:22

Its pure snotty condescencion.
"I'm only offloading bestowing my old crap largesse on the humbledeserving poor, not on cheeky feckers that have the balls nerve to ask for what they wantneed"

Tossers.

ktbeau · 11/02/2010 16:34

I agree with gagamama and fembear why is everything in the plural? Double beds?????? Sounds dodgy.

I think people should be able to ask for what they need/want on freecycle but this sounds like a commercial request, poss a landlord wanting to furnish student accomodation or summat
