Freeloadcycler out to take piss from bladder itself, as well as furnishings for entire house!

Do tell me if this isn't the most cheeky "wanted" you have ever seen:

we are just moving house so we need double beds, single beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bathroom cabinets, table, chairs, plates, pots, etc
please if posible send a picture with the item. we would like to collect asap but if it's the right item we can wait
thank you very much

I feel like posting a "Wanted" of my own:

"Wanted: to know whether anyone is going to offer anything to this ... person"

There have been some requests for furniture for women who have been re-housed, and that is quite fair. But if this person is someone like that, s/he's certainly not mentioned it, and anyway, it is of a piece with many other posts I have seen recently. This group is going mad.

But if so, so what?? I mean really?...

Why is it better to furnish "student accomodation" with yet MORE furniture from Argos, or whatever, than it is to furnish it with stuff no one needs any more?

At least it's getting used!

spiderpig8 · 11/02/2010 17:11

Freecycle isn't about being benevalent to needy people. It's about keeping stuff out of landfill!

Pozzled · 11/02/2010 21:33

I don't see the problem with people asking for what they want, but I do think it sounds strange to ask for things like double beds in the plural. Also most people who are moving house already have plates and pots? It doesn't quite ring true for me. If I had some furniture or whatever to get rid of, I wouldn't really care where it went- but I would resent being lied to.

WingedVictory · 11/02/2010 22:42

Ah, come on, I want to be sucked up to? These people are doing the sucking, if anyone. I am not having a go at people who are poor, or who have been rehoused, as I mentioned in my OP (though I suppose I could have specified domestic violence).

It's human nature to want to say "no" to someone who takes the piss.

Whiny "Wanteds" on Freecycle (our group, at least) seem to be taking the piss both in terms of quality (e.g. specifying make of stereo) and quantity: for example, the post I quoted was almost asking for an entire B&B, not to furnish a family house/flat. If you are a landlord, and thinking about furnishing like this, you ought to think again for some of it, as you cannot gurantee the material is fire-retardant enough for modern standards; varnish could be toxic (think of a teething baby); and you just ought to have more care for your tenants than to furnish wholesale like that.

Posts about specific things - which might remind people about specific things which are just hanging about the house - are of course perfectly fair, especially if it's something which is to be cannibalised to get something else working.

On a lighter note, I'm very glad the piss-taking joke did amuse.

Aren't cheeky cunts allowed on Freecycle?

Once you give your stuff away, it's not yours anymore- you don't get a say in what happens to it. Maybe they want to stack all the double beds in the middle of a cul-de-sac and set fire to them. It doesn't matter. Do you want rid of a double bed or not? That's literally the only question you have to ask yourself- otherwise you run the risk of developing a God complex.

WingedVictory · 11/02/2010 23:19

But I don't have any double beds I want to get rid of!

Anyway, I'm not complaining about people who respond to Offers, just about the OTT Wanted posts.

OP posts:
tethersend · 11/02/2010 23:28

But surely getting stuff for free is what Freecycle is there for? The clue's in the name....

I don't know why the posts annoy you.

WingedVictory · 11/02/2010 23:34

But what about the browsing aspect of it? Things you didn't know you wanted till someone mentioned them?

Anyway, some of the OTT posts annoy me because, to be honest, I fear they might get what they want. My reaction is human nature, no doubt as human as they are being for asking in the first place. But why can't instincts of human nature be in competition?

OP posts:
Doublebuggy · 12/02/2010 10:52

But so what if they get want they want.

If it gets it out of my house - who cares?

ArcticFox · 12/02/2010 11:07

I think it's fair enough. We have moved countries a couple of times and I have used "wanted" ads to give surplus stuff (saucepans, crockery, furniture we havent been able to sell) away.

I have never started means testing people. If they come and get it, it means it is no longer my problem and I am happy.

Kaloki · 12/02/2010 11:12

"I fear they might get what they want"

How is that bad?

scarletlilybug · 12/02/2010 11:30

What's wrong with wanting your stuff to go to people who might actually need it and make good use of it?

What's wrong with expecting people to be polite?

KimiLivesInStarbucks · 12/02/2010 11:35

I don't see the problem, if you have some junk unwanted things and someone wants them then why the fuss?

I would not care if I gave stuff to a young couple starting who needed a lot of things (agree asking for photo is cheeky), I don't understand why it would be ok if a was a woman starting out after a break up, but not if it is a couple/person starting out, bit of a sad attitude that.

bubblagirl · 12/02/2010 11:43

dont see anything wrong with that at all considering every day people are giving away all these items

the other day we had one on ours looking for 32" wall mountable flat screen tv

on our site we always have house clearance stuff and all the items listed in the original post so if ever i had to move with nothing again would certainly ask as i know its not an unusual request and if people don't want the stuff and your skint and having to start again seems reasonable to do it this way

Glitterknickaz · 12/02/2010 13:02

are these requests acceptable (all have been on my local freecycle)

WANTED - Bugaboo Frog. No other buggy acceptable.

WANTED - Double buggy, must be Phil and Teds.

WANTED - Playstation 3, must be good working order.

WANTED - Nintendo DS Lite. Must be good working order. Preferably pink but other colours considered.

WANTED - Laptop - must have XP or later and be working.

WANTED - video camera, only type you put DVD in or HDD tapes not acceptable.

Pushmeinthepool · 12/02/2010 13:05

I agree, Freecycle/Freegle is getting full of people taking the pee.

I offered a coat on there a couple of weeks ago, my DD had grown out of it. I got a reply "Please post some photos. I am not prepared to accept any item unless I have seen a photo first", so I sent a message back "I do not post photos, this is FREEGLE not EBAY. The item is free and as per the description". She then sent another email, much nicer and saying could she please have the coat, but by then I had offered it to someone nicer!

Doublebuggy · 12/02/2010 13:28

Glitter - of course they are all acceptable.

Most won't get any responses - but so what? Why do you care?

When it comes time to part with my doublebuggy and I see a Wanted asking for one - then I will offer it up and hey presto. It won't be cluttering my hallway anymore.

And everyone will be happy.

WingedVictory · 12/02/2010 21:30

tethersend and Kaloki, it bothers me because I was brought up to believe that we can't always have everything we want, that we have to negotiate our needs with others. There is always something to pay ("no such thing a free lunch," etc.), or someone to pay. I can't imagine I'm the only one who wants more out of Freecycle than just to save things from landfill.

Also, there is always a "queue" for useful objects, so really there is no danger of stuff going into landfill - that's just not an issue for most objects.

I don't have a problem with generic "wanteds" (no brand mentioned, just taking the piss that bothers me.

Anyway, now I have lost my sense of humour. So, if I may be cheeky at no cost to others:

OFFERED: my piss. Please, someone, take.

OP posts:
Kaloki · 12/02/2010 22:07

But then there's always the phrase "you wont get if you dont ask"

I guess if you only want to see exchanges rather than things given away for nothing then freecycle probably isn't the site for you.

You also don't have any obligation to provide anything to them, just ignore them and someone who does have stuff on their list that they want to get rid of will reply.

I think if they turned up at your house and demanded you give them furniture that you are using, then that would be taking the piss. Otherwise I really don't understand your point.

Also you may not be the only one who wants more out of freecycle than saving stuff from landfill, but that is why it exists.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 13/02/2010 12:50

I don't see a problem here, in fact it's given me an idea as I'll be moving out with OH in the next few months and if we can't get anything in time or don't have the money then freecycle would be great for us if it works!

I see no problem with it if people are planning on giving up their things anyway!
