To think it weird for pil to invite themselves over for "teatime" but watch us eating turning down all offers?

Fil rang this afternoon and asked "will you be available to receive visitors at 4pm this afternoon!" His EXACT WORDS!! LOL! Anyway somewhat taken back by the choice of words I said well yes I suppose so! They came about 430. I offered them tea and they turned it down but under pressure from my boys I did tea. Mil said dont let us stop you eating they only came to see the boys because they miss them! They watched us eat and left after about an hour and a half.

erm, I think this is ok

but only because I eat my meal at 8pm

however, if I knew what time you and your boys eat tea, I would have come earlier

Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:16

The boys go to bed by 7 and they know our routine very well which makes their behaviour very odd

I don't think its weird at all, they still got to see the kids. I don't really think it matters if they were eating or not. Takes all sorts

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2010 20:17

I wouldn't care tbh.

4.30 is too early to eat dinner in my book, perhps they are of the same persuasion.

It's a non-issue.

TheElephant · 07/02/2010 20:17

i dont think what he is saying in teh OP is so hilarious

Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:17

Thats true but it felt weird though!

Well they didn't say they would come for tea did they? They said could they come at 4pm? I would "assume" that 4pm was a bit early for most people to be eating tea. I imagine they turned down your offers of food because a) they didn't want to impose and/or b) they thought it was too early to eat.

Either way sounds like perfectly reasonable behaviour ...

TheElephant · 07/02/2010 20:19

4 30 is kids tea time
vair odd

Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:19

It seemed funny what he said it was more the tone it was said iyswim we ate at and we did offer.

i think you need a hobby

Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:20

Should be we ate at 5 btw

OP posts:
TrinityIsFallingApart · 07/02/2010 20:22

I'm surprised it has bothered you in any way at all

why would it matter if someone is visiting whilst your eating

Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:22

Why because it seemed strange having pil looking at us eating? Seemed odd to me tbh. We ate a "sunday tea" not main dinner iyswim

OP posts:
fluffles · 07/02/2010 20:24

if you normally eat between 4 and 5 then the correct answer to your FIL's question was 'yes, we'll be in but we have tea at that time, would you like to eat with us? or maybe come a little earlier/later?'

Christ, if it had went the other way you would have posted 'I am pissed off that PIL's invited themselves for dinner and I didn;t have enough I am annoyed' etc.

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/02/2010 20:26

Did they really sit there looking at you eat in manner of feeding time at the zoo.

Or were they just talkinbg to you and being sociable as you ate?

Who thell hell eats dinner at half 4 anyway? I would be starving again at 7. Even when dd was tiny we ate later than this.

Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:27

We ate 5 but they know i guess its abit aibu by stealth as i fell out with mil this week which is why fil rang. He never rings up never!

OP posts:
Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:29

Oh chill out then - they had a row and came over to build bridges.

It's NICE that they want to see your sons. It doesn't MATTER that they did not want to share faggots and chips or whatev.

Am like Elephant in thinking RAAAAAGH at you!

Snowfun · 07/02/2010 20:34

no nothing was mentioned about that at all just said they missed the dgc who they've not seen for a week!

OP posts:
littleworrywart · 07/02/2010 20:36

It is nice that they take an interest but their timing when they don't eat with you is a little strange, my PIL sometimes pop round at teatime/bathtime, which I find really irritating I know they mean well but it just makes the children hyper before bedtime!

OrmRenewed · 07/02/2010 20:41

I think it sounds like they were trying to make up. It's nice. If they didn't want to eat and they didn't mind you eating, it isn't a problem surely?
