omg i'm in shock, took dd to the toddler group this am, haven't been for ages
few new faces, as we prefer surestart.

one mum who i've never met before openly said the only reason she claims jsa, is to save up all the money so they can go to florida

her husband has a good job and shes a sahm.

that can't be true surely?
i thought they sort of made you get a job when your on jsa?

she said shes making out shes availble for work and that her mother is going to have her children, and shes planning at least 2 more children, and when the youngest[whos not born yet] starts she will say shes no longer looking for work as her mum is no longer able to look after the children as her mum has ill health
wtf shes got it all planned out
that can't be right

once again, i couldn't think of anything quick or with to say so just sat there like a goldfish

I didnt think you could claim benefits if your husband worked.

Hulababy · 05/02/2010 11:10

Can that be right?

I thought job seeker's allowance couldn't be claimed for if partner was working? And don't you hasve to go to interviews, etc. to discuss getting jobs, why you haven't taken a job - if saying you are available, etc?

chopstheduck · 05/02/2010 11:11

sounds like she is fraudulantly claiming as a single parent.

littleducks · 05/02/2010 11:11

She may be having you on

I suppose if she has just lost her job she could be claiming contribution based JSA.....i think thats the one you can get if your dp isnt working

CarrieDaBabi · 05/02/2010 11:12

why can i never think of anything to say in these situations, i just sit there like a lemon

she seems rather proud that they where going to florida.

They definitely take household income into account when determining JSA

CarrieDaBabi · 05/02/2010 11:13

yeah she might be a wind up merchant.

CarrieDaBabi · 05/02/2010 11:13

wedgiesaurus · 05/02/2010 11:14

Shes having you on.

CillySunt · 05/02/2010 11:15

Nope, she definitely cannot claim JSA whilst her husband is working.

All she can do is claim national insurance contributions and maybe something else but I cannot remember what it is called.

ToccataAndFudge · 05/02/2010 11:15

I think you can claim contributions based JSA if you've lost your job - regardless of your DH's income........but only for 6 months and then you either have to go into income based (which would take into account her DH's income - ie she wouldn't get it), or you get nothing.

chopstheduck · 05/02/2010 11:16

apparently from googling, if you have been working and made redundant you can claim contribution based JSA for 6 months, even if married to a working partner, so long as the NI contributions have been sufficient.

BigMomma3 · 05/02/2010 11:16

Yup before you dob her in , if she has worked for something like 26 weeks over the last two years (or something like that) she can claim contribution based JSA even if her DH is earning 50 grand a year. It is not means tested but goes on what national insurance contributions you've made. So perhaps she is doing nothing wrong after all .

so she could have got £1664 legimtately from contributions based JSA...........surely you wouldn't get to Disneyland Florida on that with a a family?????????

She's either bullshitting, or claiming fraudulently.

famishedass · 05/02/2010 11:19

I claimed JSA in similar circumstances with a husband who was earning good money at the time.

Worked for an agency for 2 years, got pregnant, went on maternity leave and after that ran out I went onto JSA for 6 months.

Is that wrong then?

CarrieDaBabi · 05/02/2010 11:24

excuse me big mama, i never said i was going to dob her in

i clearly don't know all the facts

she said she was going to do it until the youngest was starting school, but shes planning at least 2 more or something.

perhaps she deosn't realise she can only do it for 6 months

OP posts:
CarrieDaBabi · 05/02/2010 11:28

realitiy, they must have knowm then surely if he was turning up in his work clothes covered in paint!?
how long was he claiming benefits

OP posts:
famishedass · 05/02/2010 11:29

I think the key issue here is the 6 months thing. Clearly she's paid enough N.I. to be eligable for JSA but maybe she doesn't realise then that you only get it for 6 months.

She's a bit out of touch if she doesn't realise that. Oh well, I'd sit back and enjoy watching her face when you tell her.

Really though, if she's eligible for it and she spends it on holidays, that's her business.

CarrieDaBabi · 05/02/2010 11:33

well i doubt she will get far on 6 months jsa.

anyway going for a nice pub lunch now with actual friends not playgroup aquantances

see you lot later

OP posts:
muggglewump · 05/02/2010 11:37

Wouldn't you have to save for years to do that? JSA isn't that much.

Ewww at Florida though, it's my idea of hell, far too many children around for one.
