omg i'm in shock, took dd to the toddler group this am, haven't been for ages
few new faces, as we prefer surestart.

one mum who i've never met before openly said the only reason she claims jsa, is to save up all the money so they can go to florida

her husband has a good job and shes a sahm.

that can't be true surely?
i thought they sort of made you get a job when your on jsa?

she said shes making out shes availble for work and that her mother is going to have her children, and shes planning at least 2 more children, and when the youngest[whos not born yet] starts she will say shes no longer looking for work as her mum is no longer able to look after the children as her mum has ill health
wtf shes got it all planned out
that can't be right

once again, i couldn't think of anything quick or with to say so just sat there like a goldfish

6 months (26 weeks) of JSA would be £1671.80

muggglewump · 05/02/2010 11:42

I actually have no idea how much a holiday at Disney costs, but I assumed it was more than that?

Portofino · 05/02/2010 11:47

Well I just payed £1500 for 10 nights in a mobile home with Canvas. We are NOT going to Florida.

I hope she is patient. I baulk at the cost of a trip to Disneyworld and refuse to even consider Disneyland Paris because of the ridiculous cost. And we are definitely not hard up for cash.

You can claim with partner working but you get considerably less than usual, and 'usual' is fifty a week at most! So I think she's having you on a bit

JSA is a bitch to work out and whatnot too. I'm on it with my boyfriend at the moment and they've been screwing us over something chronic. We've been paid three times (today our third time!) since November last year because they keep forgetting about us, wasn't fun to have no money over Christmas and new year

ToccataAndFudge · 05/02/2010 12:03

ermmm - porphy - the "usual" is £64.30 if you're over

UndomesticHousewife · 05/02/2010 12:06

Are you sure she's not winding you up because if she was really doing this why on earth would she go around telling everyone?
But like others have said she could be entitled to it anyway but can't see that she'll get to Florida on it.

My dh was out of work for a little while and as I'm a SAHM he had to sign on and made a joint claim for contributions based jsa, we got £90 a week.

Luckily he was only on it for about 3 weeks or we would have really been snookered, our weekly grocery bill is more than that.

PlanetEarth · 05/02/2010 12:43

As ToccataAndFudge says, JSA is not means tested for the first 6 months, so her husband's income is irrelevant, as long as a) she's paid contributions and b) she's looking for work. They do ask what you're doing re job applications etc. but I don't know how rigorous this is. You also have to have interviews at say 3 months and 6 months to see how you're getting on. After the 6 months I think you go onto means-tested benefits.

LittleMrsHappy · 05/02/2010 12:49

Shes not having you on, she can claim contribution based JSA, even of her partner is working, she will get contribution based job seekers allowance.

she is legally entitled to this, what she is doing is immoral, but not illegal.

Also they cannot prove one way or another if she is actively seeking a job or not, and also she will only be entitled to it for 6 months and then she has to re-apply.

wedgiesaurus · 05/02/2010 13:01

I thought contribution based JSA lasted for a maximum of 6 months only. Didnt know you could re-apply after 6 months.

GettinTrimmer · 05/02/2010 13:10

I used to work for the Benefits Agency, she might be claiming JSA contribution based from National Insurance when she worked, it lasts for 6 months (when I worked there).

She would be asked to prove she is looking for work.

nevereatbrownsnow · 05/02/2010 13:10

We did 6 nights in euro disney at just over £1000 for a family of four, having said that my uber stingey bro in law booked it all himself.

Had a great time!!

PorphyrophillicPixie · 05/02/2010 13:14

Toccata: Sorry, we're both twenty, I didn't realise the rate went up with age We get £100.94 I think each week (apparently!)

CarrieDaBabi · 05/02/2010 15:58

i'm back.

ah that was nice.
nice sunny day too

feel much better now

i think she was saying in a boasty kinda way, and thining everyone was going to say, wow you are so clever

but everyone just sat there a bit stunned

chegirlsgotheartburn · 05/02/2010 16:09

When I was claiming JSA it was 60 ish quid.

I could get it for 6 mths.

I had to prove I had been looking for work and was supposed to be applying for 4 jobs a week.

It was a bit akward to find any jobs I could practically apply for. I was really limited in the hours I could work because I care for DS2 and OH (he was working part time).

The people at the JC were very understanding and couldnt believe my incapacity benefit had been stopped but they kept warning me that the JSA would be stopped if I didnt keep to the rules.

So this woman seems a bit deluded to me.

And a bit stupid if she thought everyone would be patting her on the back.

BigWeeHag · 05/02/2010 16:17

I claimed contribution based JSA for a couple of months. The "proof" that I was working consisted of filling in a wee book that no-one read - the person doing the signing just counted that there were the correct number of entries.

chegirlsgotheartburn · 05/02/2010 16:24

Blimey I had to bring in adverts and times that I had called the helplines, when I had looked at the website etc.

Remotew · 05/02/2010 16:36

This was quite normal a few years ago when maternity pay wasn't so generous. They only had to keep your job open for 3 months and you only received maternity pay for 16 weeks. A woman with a DP wouldn't want to go back to work so when the maternity pay was finishing she would tell her employer she wasn't returning to work then go an sign on for contribution based JSA for 12 months as it was then. At least it's only 6 months now and maternity pay is for so much longer.

She was absolutely entitled to it as she couldn't work full time so was now looking for a new part time job.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 05/02/2010 16:45

BigWeeHag: Our sign-in books have been read once since we started signing on last year. We do fill it out (we both have to fill in one app form a week, call one place and check the internet twice I think?!) but it amazes me how people 'forget' too and still get paid! In my JC a lot of people don't even come in according to this guy I see every week, they call in and get told that they're fine, they can check in over the phone

Pikelit · 05/02/2010 17:07

Lawks! You'd think she'd misuse the JSA by going somewhere decent. But actually, I always think it is best to treat remarks like this with a pinch of salt.

Pikelit · 05/02/2010 17:08

PS. I'd also save my "omg'ing!!!!" and shock horror for something worth bothering about.

Tortington · 05/02/2010 17:10

no its absolutely true

there is a poster up in the job centre

CLAIM JSA AND GET FREE TICKETS TO DISNEYWORLD FLORIDA

its right next to the one that says

CLAIM BENFITS AND GET A NEW 4X4 AND WIDESCREEN TV

muppet

annh · 05/02/2010 17:15

Well, I guess if she is stupid enough to tell a bunch of relative strangers what she is doing, she is probably also stupid enough to think that she can carry on claiming JSA for years on end!
