to think that breastfeeding a 25 year old, even as a one off, is more than a little strange?

Article here about when breastfeeding should stop and the author quoted two examples of 25 year old women bfing as a one off after a bereavement.

'two 25-year-old women who had suffered bereavement and went to their respective mothers for ?one-off comfort?.
"It probably started with a cuddle and led from there," she tells me'

Now I am very pro breastfeeding but I found this very strange/unusual. I just can't imagine a situation where I, as a woman in my 20s, would breastfeed from my mother but then part of me thinks if they've just suffered a big loss, who am I to think this way of coping is wrong?

So, less of an AIBU but more of a what do you all think?

That's bollocks a 25 year old went to her mum for a comfort feed as a 'one off.' Her mother is still lactating at what- fifty odd? And could magically produce the milk at will for that one off feed?

WHat a load of total garbage.

Nellykats · 04/02/2010 22:41

oh that's just so sweet, "that's a pretty bra", that made me smile! what a kind little one you have!

baskingseals · 04/02/2010 22:43

timelordvictorious · 04/02/2010 22:51

well said fishie!

wastingaway · 04/02/2010 22:57

Harriet, a 25 year old could have a 41 year old mother and one year old sibling.

timelordvictorious · 04/02/2010 22:59

Starlight, I reckon you'd get loads of space if you started to bf yourself on a plane or a bus...

I just massaged mine!

SpeedyGonzalez · 05/02/2010 00:40

Firstly, this article comes from the Metro. Surely that should be evidence enough?

Secondly, just imagine you have a 25-year-old daughter. Chances are, you haven't breastfed in up to 24 years. So firstly why would she come to you for a cuddle and out of the blue you'd whip your boobs out? And secondly, how on earth are you going to produce milk on the spot after 24 years?

It is possible for women (and men!) to lactate without pregnancy, but it takes a loooong time and a huge effort to do it.

What a load of rubbish.

Not even going to comment on curryfreak.

Speedy, a 25 year old could have a 41 year old mother and one year old sibling.

SpeedyGonzalez · 05/02/2010 10:30

Yeah, alright, alright.

But you can't knock down my Metro argument, canya?

wastingaway · 05/02/2010 10:41

Yeah, you can have that one,

I'm afraid it really is true and I wish it wasn't.

wastingaway · 05/02/2010 15:07

Iva, I think there's a very instinctive thing to hug our child to our bosom to protect them, and nurture them. Especially in such an upsetting time. Don't be , you're very loved.

PuzzleRocks · 05/02/2010 15:09

Oh for goodness sake people. IvaNighSpare. I've a nice pair.

PuzzleRocks · 05/02/2010 15:09

Who are you Iva?

porcamiseria · 05/02/2010 16:15

well there you go Iva! put in in the memory box and put it waaaay to the back of the wardrobe

fuck I would die if my Mum did that, shudders

IvaNighSpare · 06/02/2010 09:11

Puzzle: I've been using this nickname for a while, the irony of posting on this thread eluded me till you pointed it out.
Porca: that wardrobe is sealed!

Curryfreak - you really are incredibly ignorant on the subject of breastfeeding. That said, reading that you and your dh proudly refer to bf supporters as "mafia" and "nazis" does tell us an awful lot about the sort of people you are so it's not really surprising to hear your views on natural term breastfeeding (or anything else actually). You are both a bit of a cliche and a sad reflection of what many people are like.
