to have noticed that Tory voters are more polite on the whole than their left-wing counterparts

You don't get many lifelong Conservative voters talking about dancing on Michael Foot(e?)'s grave in the style of a rabid working class person talking about Mrs Thatcher do you?

spongebrainbigpants · 03/02/2010 19:50

Do you only know about political events that you're old enough to remember ?!

KurriKurri · 03/02/2010 19:50

perhaps you're confusing him with Clement Attlee?

spongebrainbigpants · 03/02/2010 19:51

There is a lot to hate about the Tories as I said before . . . .

EdgarAllenSnow · 03/02/2010 19:52

i find the lasting venom against a woman who is now in her 80's and suffering dementia very unnecessary (especially as you find it on mainstream comedy shows - a very cheap joke indeed and about as much current cutting-edge satire as ripping shreds out of 'peace in our time')

she was a Prime minister, not a mass murderer and although (in political terms) more successful than many others not really to be judged outside the normal terms politicians are judged (the Labour governemt before was a catastrophe - does anyone even mention that now? what was the guys name?)

i think the OP has a point.

nickytwotimes · 03/02/2010 19:53

I've met some bloody rude right-wingers myself.
And some bloody rude lefties too.

I don't think you have a case.

Dismissed.

EmilyStrange · 03/02/2010 19:53

People have forgotten how hideous life was under the Tories

I haven't Emily

WineBeforePearls · 03/02/2010 19:54

I think Labour and their supporters can never forgive Thatcher a) for being a woman and b) for being right.

SeaTheStars · 03/02/2010 19:55

why 'hate' though? strong word isn't it, PMs come and go making their mistakes but don't see what they do (other than lead us into illegal wars or encourage everyone to go on strike) to make people hate the entire party

OP posts:
SeaTheStars · 03/02/2010 19:57

ah Edgar puts it much more eloquently than me

OP posts:
SeaTheStars · 03/02/2010 19:58

nicky, not saying right wing voters are not capable of being rude - just saying they don't seem to be so bitter and full of hatred about their opposition

mrschigur · 03/02/2010 19:58

I don't think being old or unwell should protect Thatcher from negativity.

Old (and young) people now are still feeling the pain of her legacy. She was a figurehead for a movement that caused deep damage to our society.

Though that wouldn't bother Mrs cult of individualism.

AuntieMaggie · 03/02/2010 19:58

me either emily

SeaTheStars · 03/02/2010 19:59

what was hideous about life under the Tories?

OP posts:
mrschigur · 03/02/2010 20:00

thought you were old enough to remember

spongebrainbigpants · 03/02/2010 20:01

PMSL winebeforepearls!!

Hmm, yep, that's it. It was all about misogny .

She was a disaster for this country and it has not recovered - and probably never will.

She never shed any tears over the lives she destroyed - why should we shed any tears over her?

said · 03/02/2010 20:01

Why would right-wingers feel bitterness and hatred towards their opponents? The tory party has traditionally represented those with wealth/power.

SeaTheStars · 03/02/2010 20:02

I don't remember it being hideous, think it was easier then than now (was on my own with a couple of babies) - imagine it would be much harder to get a reasonable job and buy a house now.

edam · 03/02/2010 20:03

No, I think people despise Maggie and all her works for the immense suffering she caused. (I'm an equal opportunities judge, happy to condemn TB and his war, too.)

She didn't just deliberately destroy our primary and secondary industries, throwing millions of people out of work (and shortening their lives), she danced on their graves.

This is about reaping what she sowed. Judging someone by their acts. Not that it ever bothered her in the slightest, anyway.

Look at the families of the men killed in the Falklands - including those on the Belgrano which was sailing AWAY from the exclusion zone and full of conscripts living under a ruddy dictatorship, FFS. That's before you get started on the suicides of people driven to despair and the devastating illness and avoidable deaths caused by mass unemployment. This recession has got nothing on Maggie's (and she gave us two, in case you've forgotten).

mrschigur · 03/02/2010 20:04

selling off public property.

selling off all the good council housing and not replacing it.

crushing of unions.

Falklands War.

Promotion of policies and culture which actively encouraged people to think of themselves as individuals, not participants in society.

For a start.

Thatcher's legacy I know it's the Mirror but...

ooosabeauta · 03/02/2010 20:07

I can understand the feeling of hatred for someone who publicly espoused the view that 'there is no such thing as community'. If you understand the power and influence she had in her reign then you can understand why this is such a destructive, depressing and loathsome view. It's the worst of capitalism.

spongebrainbigpants · 03/02/2010 20:07

It was the encouragement of the "I'm alright Jack so f**k you" culture that has done the most damage to this country. Tragic.

And it's much harder to buy a house now because of the economic policies driven by the Tories in the 80s/90s.

KurriKurri · 03/02/2010 20:08

An ideology of greed and selfishness, unemployment - we talked about being one of maggie's millions, the poll tax, the treatment of the miners - destruction of communities, arms dealing, milksnatching, the 'rejoice' speech, - things that make my stomach turn just thinking about them. the list is extensive

She was unscrupulous, and manipulative in getting her own way. She was surrounded by henchmen who were just as bad. She lacked humour, compassion, imagination and decency.
