saw this on a friend of a friend's facebook as a status:

"Shame on you ENGLAND !!!!!! The only country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed without eating, elderly going without needed meds, and mentally ill without treatment - yet we donate £50 MILLION to the people of Haiti...99% of people won't have the guts to copy and repost this!! It's a disgrace charity begins at home !!"

I cant even put into words what I think about this statement. Is narrowminded and silly the right thing to think? I mean, do people not see a huge national disaster that caused 200,000 deaths and destruction of infastructure on such a huge scale is completely different to England's "problems"?

It almost strikes me as BNP kind of talk. I mean, I'm patriotic, but surely this is extreme?

YANBU

GhoulsAreLoud · 28/01/2010 21:11

I'm fairly sure we're not the only country with those problems

What a plank.

Toffeepopple · 28/01/2010 21:11

YANBU

If a friend of mine posted that I would be absolutely horrified.

diedandgonetodevon · 28/01/2010 21:14

Didn't we do this thread yesterday?

juneybean · 28/01/2010 21:18

Yeah I started a similar thread yesterday lol

smokinaces · 28/01/2010 21:20

Sorry Juneybean! I did have a look through, and was on here most of last night, cant believe I missed it

glad I'm not BU though

aha! found it in chat - didnt think to look there, as I mostly lurk on AIBU. Off to have a read of it now!

juneybean · 28/01/2010 21:22

By the end of yesterday another person had posted it, needless to say both have been removed from my friends list

smokinaces · 28/01/2010 21:28

So far no one on my list has posted it - this is a friend of a friend of my ex-husband (I like being nosey, ooops) I dont think I'd be able to sit on my hands if any of my friends posted it. And if they honestly thought that I think I'd have to delete them as friends.

The sad thing to me was the person who commented on their status with "totally agree" is currently claiming every benefit available to feed and house them and their 5 children - yet they dont appreciate that this is a good country in the grand scheme of things. [sigh]

Urgh, YANBU.

Cause none of those things happen anywhere else in the world do they.

Mind you I live in Scotland which along with Wales is clearly some sort of utopia as none of those bad things happen here according to doofus mcdingbat.

OrmRenewed · 28/01/2010 22:11

"The only country" Really? Oh well that's good news then

Twat.

NichyNoo · 29/01/2010 11:58

This is the BNP - it was a quote from Nick Griffin that was put on the BBC website just after the disaster. I guess it is also posted as a press release on the BNP website but I refuse to look at that website.

Your friend has copied and pasted a BNP quote for thier status...hmmm....sounds like a nice person

chocolaterabbit · 29/01/2010 12:03

YANBU, the friend of your friend is very ignorant and selfish.

DuelingFanjo · 29/01/2010 12:03

omg - i anyone did this on my friends list I would completely challenge them!

ZZZenAgain · 29/01/2010 12:07

well if you personally know someone who is homeless without selter, dc who go to bed hungry, elderly and medically ill not receiving treatment - someone in your family for instance who you really care about, it might be hurtful to think the govt is leaving them to suffer and yet there is enough money floating around for it to be sent overseas IYSWIM?

I know last week sometime I was posting on here in a dither about my dd's violin lessons and wondering whether I should get her extra violin lessons. Such were my troubles. That night I saw footage on TV about Haiti. A woman who had gone to work inthe morning leaving her two toddlers at home. They got crushed to death. She was staring with a total deadness in her eyes and the journalist asked her if she had been able to bury them. She said no, she had thrown them away. She had no photos of them, nothing. No idea where she was going, lost everything.

Now I read today that homeless women in Haiti are being raped and I think even those amongst us who have a crappy life for whatever reason here in Europe, are so much better off. Really there are degrees of need too. How can anyone begrudge these poor people help?

Soapsy · 29/01/2010 12:07

A 'friend' (acquaintance) of mine has this today as well. Having disagreed with them politically before, was debating de-friending them. Now I know its a BNP quote, I know what I'm going to be doing next...

ZZZenAgain · 29/01/2010 12:09

when you think Liberia sent funds to help Haiti.

Liberia. How poor are they? How many homeless without shelter in Liberia?

honeybunmum · 29/01/2010 12:16

I also had this flash up on my homepage from a couple of idiots I have on my list just because I like unfounded gossip friends. I don't know who started it but these things are like chain letters, challenge or ignore them and they soon stop.
Interesting to see it originally came from the BNP, might have to enlighten them on that one!
Luckily on the whole human nature instinctively brings people together to help in these appalling disasters. These mindless idiots who come out with these comments probably do nothing to help the English causes they are bleating about either. Easy to jump on that nasty 'patriotic' band-waggon when it suits them!

Here is his quote on the BBC website: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/8462717.stm

I don't want to post a link to the BNP website for obvious reasons.

It is shocking that a human being can think and say what he does.
