Foul language on Mumsnet…

Foul language on Mumsnet?

Having newly registered with Mumsnet I am dismayed, after perusing uTube and other forum sites where obscenities constantly pop up, to note use of foul language on this ?family site?.

I reported the swearing, specifically, where ?arseholes? was utilised as a reference to political parties.

The return I got from Mumsnet HQ was ??we don't think we
should be the arbiters of what people should find offensive and what
they shouldn't.? and ??We generally find it's better to let the boards self-
police??

May I engage you all in a quick survey?

Hands up all those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? as an offensive expression that should not be used on these boards??

Thank you?

Hands up those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? inoffensive??

Thanks?

Looks like the arseholes have it!

Blimey, pretty impressive language going on now... do you kiss your children with those mouths!

alibubbles · 19/01/2010 10:01

She probably doesn't like bumsex either...

tartyhighheels · 19/01/2010 10:01

everyone likes bumsex.....

VinegarTits · 19/01/2010 10:05

Ok who are you OP?

Cocklodger? or turd burgler?

Moijaimelacountry · 19/01/2010 10:08

My coffee is now all over my screen, fuck sake!

YABU OP, this is the whole point of MN, you can express yourself freely.

I agree Netmums may be a better site for you. Off you trot!

TheCrackFox · 19/01/2010 10:10

IMO the phrase "cunt bubble" isn't used often enough in daily life.

tartyhighheels · 19/01/2010 10:12

crackfox - that's a good one and i shall endevour ro use that today, thank you for sharing..

ratherupsetfriend · 19/01/2010 10:13

I think people hide behind anonynmity here and doubt if they would be so uncouth in real life.

I drop the odd swear word into my real conversations, but there are some words that I would never use.

I also think many posters enjoy being provocative/attention seekrs and are maybe shrinking violets in real life.

Overall, my personal view is that there is too much swearing on this forum- all it does is show a limited vocabulary. (disappears up own backside.)

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/01/2010 10:19

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we are in trouble haha

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 10:21

I don't swear much in RL (mainly the odd 'shit' and 'fuck' hissed under breath when I do something really stupid, like drop a jar of thousands of tiny beads all over the floor where my baby-who-puts-everything-in-her-mouth is crawling...like a minute ago!).

On MN, I eff and blind like a navvy. It's therapeutic.

VinegarTits · 19/01/2010 10:21

I never swear in RL converstions, it sounds vile, i also dont go around calling myself vinegartits or terrywoganscock

and that is because RL is not the same as here, and swearing in text is not the same as saying it or hearing it

expatinscotland · 19/01/2010 10:22

Off with you to fuck then!

Don't let the door hit you on the arse.

daftpunk · 19/01/2010 10:24

Agree ratherupsetfriend, arn't most comedians manic depressives off stage ? I cringe at the stupid names people give themselves on here, and the bumsex threads just make me yawn....

Tamarto · 19/01/2010 10:25

Family site? um which part is for the children?

They have cbeebies, go whinge if there is swearing on there and leave us adults to do what the fuck we like

I do agree though reffering to politicians as arseholes is out of order, they need a much stronger word!

I agree nobber is a good word my 5 year old thinks so too.

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/01/2010 10:25

OH Vinegar you have spoilt my iamge of you now!!! I have been meeting people lately and waiting to meet someone called Vinegartits bollocks!!!!!

BetsyLittleson · 19/01/2010 10:26

I love that I can freely use fuck, shit, bollocks, weightwatchers and Scunthorpe without having to arse about putting accents over the letters

YABFuckingU.

Maleeka · 19/01/2010 10:29

Thanks for the quote cyteen, now i just have to wait for another thread so i can say "calm the fuck down or fuck the fuck off"

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 19/01/2010 10:32

while i think mnhq gave you the right answer and while i do swear in rl, i do find the professed great love of swearing on here a bit moronic.

Longtalljosie · 19/01/2010 10:36

"I also think many posters enjoy being provocative/attention seekrs and are maybe shrinking violets in real life."

Jimmychasesducks · 19/01/2010 10:36

yabu
this isn't a family site and imo swearing is not a big deal

MrsCadwallader · 19/01/2010 10:39

But isn't the moronic immaturity of the swearing the very thing that is so appealing?

It's a complete joy to have one little corner of your life where you're not having to be 'the grown up'.

MrsMattie · 19/01/2010 10:39

But no matter how wide your vocabulary or how sophisticated your use of language normally is, nothing quite beats a good 'Fuck!' to release tension, Aitch.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 19/01/2010 10:40

not to me, i don't want to hang out with teenagers who think that bumsex is an inherently hilarious word.

purplepeony · 19/01/2010 10:41

It's as if a lot of mn take pleasure in seeing how many times they can say fuck in their posts and how many different ways they can use it in the sentence.
Childish. You sound like a lot of year 9s let loose on an anonymous forum.
Grow up.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 19/01/2010 10:42

completely, mrsmattie, like i say i do swear in rl and on here occasionally for comic effect. not in an argument, though, that's when you've lost it. but i don't find it hilarious per se.
