Foul language on Mumsnet…

Foul language on Mumsnet?

Having newly registered with Mumsnet I am dismayed, after perusing uTube and other forum sites where obscenities constantly pop up, to note use of foul language on this ?family site?.

I reported the swearing, specifically, where ?arseholes? was utilised as a reference to political parties.

The return I got from Mumsnet HQ was ??we don't think we
should be the arbiters of what people should find offensive and what
they shouldn't.? and ??We generally find it's better to let the boards self-
police??

May I engage you all in a quick survey?

Hands up all those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? as an offensive expression that should not be used on these boards??

Thank you?

Hands up those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? inoffensive??

Thanks?

Looks like the arseholes have it!

tbh i don't find swearing offensive. i do find swearing on mumsnet a little strange though - purely due to the effort it must take....swearing verbally just flows, but some posts every second word is fuck/cunt/bollocks and it always amuses me because it seems kind of forced.

am probably not making any sense whatsoever - i reiterate, i don't find it offensive.....more amusingly odd!

TBH the freedom to utter obscenities at will is one of the things I really really like about MN.

When you spend your entire time with young children acting like Mary (Frigging) Poppins, when the worst obsecnity you are allowed to express is 'Oh my goodness gracious me! What a dreadful muddle!' I love the fact that, online, I can translate it immediately to 'Fuck it! What a fucking fuck up!'

Swearing is good for the soul and used sparingly can be an excellent stress reliever. That's scientific fact. I know it is, I read it somewhere. Probably on't'fucking internet.

-----
/ OP you belong

here.

Off you fuck dearie.

heQet · 19/01/2010 07:35

Yes, I find a lot of swearing dull, especially when done for 'shock' value, because - let's face it - in this day and age, it's nothing. And the swearing contents are neither big nor clever (I sound like my mother!

Longtalljosie · 19/01/2010 07:37

I take it this isn't the first time the OP's gone all Mary Whitehouse on us?

Microbe - you wouldn't walk into a pub, be introduced to a new group of people and within minutes start demanding they change their language. I wouldn't do it here, either. It won't a) work or b) endear you to many people.

GibbonInARibbon · 19/01/2010 07:39

I never say cunt in RL

As has been said, after a day of being virtue personified. I do like to log on and call everyone a bunch of cunts.

Affectionately ofc

posieparker · 19/01/2010 07:40

Methinks OP is a politician because noone else gives a rats arse what politicians are referred to. Only a politician would have delusions that they are in a safe bracket which means they can't be called arseholes.... although I do prefer asshole.

GibbonInARibbon · 19/01/2010 07:41

Good post HeQet and spot on.

LittleMrsHappy · 19/01/2010 07:44

SOME PEOPLE ARE ARSEHOLES!

AND tbqf, so are you, what are you 10 that cannot see that if a adult want to say these things, that is their opinion and have a right to do so!

SixtyFootDoll · 19/01/2010 07:49

agre with Heqet

kreecherlivesupstairs · 19/01/2010 07:55

Clarity at last, I understand why that poem has been posted a couple of time now.

BouncingTurtle · 19/01/2010 08:02

YANBU, Microbe.

I think it is fucking disgusting all the swearing, there is no bastard need for it. There are a right bunch of bitches constantly going on about cunting Sainsbury's and arse fucking all the time.

Where is AnyFucker when you need her
She didn't change her name did she

Hullygully · 19/01/2010 08:20

I agree Op. It's unladylike and unnecessary. No one wants to hear foul language from a lady's mouth.

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/01/2010 08:39

BUT Hully Technically speaking.....its my fingers that are swearing not my mouth because I am not verbalising my posts as i type them!!!

Hullygully · 19/01/2010 08:40

If thy fingers offend thee.

pingviner · 19/01/2010 08:52

the swearing is why I come here....

quinne · 19/01/2010 08:56

I don't like the foul language either. If I met someone who swore like that in RL, I'd think them very low and probably uneducated.

Longtalljosie · 19/01/2010 08:57

Ah! Is this the one who wanted AnyFucker to change her name?

Do you watch the beginning of Four Weddings and a Funeral with your fingers in your ears OP?

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/01/2010 08:58

I think thats the whole thing though most posters on here do not swear as much in rl, and coming on here is a way to vent, say all the things they want to say without fear of offending anyone.

JackBauer · 19/01/2010 09:07

YANBU. clearly politicians aren't arseholes.
They are nobbers.

Which just happens to be my new favourite word.
Nobber.

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/01/2010 09:11

ohhh all these nice shiney swear words!!!!

My favourite word today will be Nobbers thanks jacks!!!

TheArmadillo · 19/01/2010 09:27

I find it incrediably rude and arrogant that someone joins a website or any group (whether in RL or online) and immediately demands that it is changed to fit them.

There are thousands of users of this site and the main reason swearing is allowed is because the users want it. To storm in and demand that it is all changed because you don't like it isn't going to go down well.

I find it ruder than saying cunt tbh.

AnyFucker · 19/01/2010 09:30

I agree with the OP

I think foul language is disgusting a lack of intelligence in the user

It should all be banned or 'ed out

It does a family site, no favours at all
