would spray air fresheners or have those plug in air freshener things in their house??

they actually STINK! and i dread to think what they are doing to the ozone layer, even the ones without an aeresol - nothing that smells that bad could be a good thing

YANBU.

They are common.

yama · 14/01/2010 17:31

I agree. Probably not good for lungs either. I don't like breathing in chemicals.

compo · 14/01/2010 17:32

Oh my mil has them all over the house
you can hear a puff every twent minutes and then a false stench of something, lol

lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 17:33

well when you come in my house you will be greeted with the aroma of wet dog, mixed with last nigths dinner probably. Better than lilly of the sodding valley interspersed with Winter delights, or whatever shit they put in those things. I was nearly sick yesterday when i went in someones house and they had just sprayed

Give me wet dog any day

Yanbu. Open the window occasionally ffs!

skybluewinking · 14/01/2010 17:35

I can tell if someone is using that vile OUST stuff. My nose dries up, and itches. It is REVOLTING. I do like a nice Diptyque candle though!

AKMD · 14/01/2010 17:36

YANBU but I had the plug-in ones when we lived in a tiny one-bed flat because the bathroom didn't have a window and the extractor fan was about as effective as the proverbial chocolate teapot. Sometimes they are the lesser of two evils!

LaurieFairyCake · 14/01/2010 17:37

this is why I make my own soya candles with essential oils and burn them every day.

Small house + dog + Four Cats + bunny + child = stinky-farty-pants-smell

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 14/01/2010 17:37

My mum has this awful thing in the living rom that sprays air freshener every 1/2 hour it makes an alarming noise and is on shelves right by the big sofa - I can't stand it.

YANBU. They give me a headache.

Best thing for farty smells in the toilet is to strike a match (no - not near your bum).

GrimmaTheNome · 14/01/2010 17:39

YANBU. Vile.

skybluewinking · 14/01/2010 17:43

Hi Laurie, I have marked your candle thread for when I am not bedridden. Can't wait nto make my own Diptyque-esque candles!

SofaQueen · 14/01/2010 17:47

YANBU. Don't get me started on those under the rim toilet smelly things. Yucky and soo unhygenic.

MrsMattie · 14/01/2010 17:48

I do keep a Febreze air freshener in my downstairs loo for guests who might stink it out and then feel embarassed and need the psychological crutch of a good few sprays of AF (we all know air freshener doesnt actually get rid of poo smells. You can just smell poo laced with Febreze)...

southeastastra · 14/01/2010 17:48

i have a bloo loo, it smells divine. i sometimes take it out just to sniff it.

ZZZenAgain · 14/01/2010 17:57

prefer them to dh's aftershave.

open windown policy in my house. First thing in the morning and whenever I think of it, I fling open the windows. Drives dh nuts. He says he feels like bl* Scott and do we have to have freezing cold icy wind sweepng through the house every morning?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 14/01/2010 17:57

What is a bloo loo?

I went over to pick DS up from a playdate and noticed the water was blue, didn't have the courage to ask how or why?

mummysgoingmad · 14/01/2010 18:02

and what if your dp's just went for the biggest, smellest shite and you've got a bath running!

I know what smell i'd choose

YABU

Soojie · 14/01/2010 18:05

Good point - they do smell fake and give me a horrible taste in my mouth.

But - our house has a slight smell - a bit damp/ a bit of next door's cigarettes and I am desperate to make it smell nicer.

Anyone got any useful hints? And - I do open the windows regularly, though it is bloody cold at the moment.

Angelcat666 · 14/01/2010 18:09

Laurie your house sounds like mine only I don't have a rabbit but do have 2 teenagers

Plug in air fresheners are supposed to be one of the main causes of house fires.

AKMD · 14/01/2010 18:12

Soojie, try sorting the damp. If it's condensation, get a dehumidifier. We had mould growing on the walls in our flat as the damp was so bad but a dehumidifier sorted it out in less than a week.

ShinyAndNew · 14/01/2010 18:16

I love bloo loos. They are a block of bleach type stuff that you put inside the cistern.

I do have air freshners in, but rarely use them. I tend to open windows onto their latches in the winter. So enough air gets in to keep the house nice and fresh, but it's still warm.

If the house starts getting especially stinky, I put a load of washing in with fabric softner. That makes the whole downstairs smell lovely. Or I mop the floors. I love the smell of Flash hardfloor cleaner. Shake n vac the stairs. Bounce sheets on radiators.

Air freshner is reserved only for things like when the dog/dds are sick and it stinks/mil is coming and I've been cooking garlic. And even then it's combined with window opening. I use Neutradol spray airfreshner. Not the plugins.

Haggisfish · 14/01/2010 18:16

YANBU - the plug in oily ones have been responsible for very many house fires, and the other ones are just more unnecessary chemicals we are exposing ourselves and our children to - bleuch.

Soojie · 14/01/2010 18:17

Thanks AKMD - there's no obvious damp, that's what drives me mad. Can't quite pinpoint the cause, but just doesn't smell as nice as my friends' houses. It's clean, but a certain staleness lurks and it drives me mad, as I don't want to resort to horrible plug ins.

Can't believe, I'm having such a domesticated rant, tbh, this is scary!
