would spray air fresheners or have those plug in air freshener things in their house??

they actually STINK! and i dread to think what they are doing to the ozone layer, even the ones without an aeresol - nothing that smells that bad could be a good thing

Oh air fresheners (and especially the advertisements for them) are my pet hate! So many new innovations! Such a pointless horrible product!

Soojie, essential oils on lightbulbs (or in a burner) can be good for making your house smell better.

MamaLazarou · 14/01/2010 18:20

YANBU - they are revolting and make me sneeze.

If my house needs freshening-up, I wipe the radiators with a few drops of essential oil and turn the heating on.

Shinyandnew, your house sounds most fragrant.

MamaLazarou · 14/01/2010 18:21

DH shouts at the tele when those adverts come on: 'Clean your house, you stinky git!'

PandaEis · 14/01/2010 18:21

we use the dettol one which has barely a smell to it but i bought a febreeze one for the bathroom as we have no window and the extractor fan is broken (DH is an electrician and it has been broken for over a year now)

i do like a nice candle every now and then though

lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 18:22

oh febreeze - vomit!!! I was a vet nurse and a couple of the nurses used to use this to disguise the shit piss and vomit - it was vile vile vile - it makes me want to puke just thinking of it

I bought one of those lavender bloo loo things once. It was quite an off putting shade of purple. Like actually to the point where it made me feel a bit odd using the loo.

I do however like the little bicarb lavender jobbies you can get for the cistern. They make it smell all clean and fresh.

lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 18:26

Blimey shiney, its a wonder anyone can BREATHE in your house!!! shake n vac, and bounce are another of my pet hates!!

I tend to use essential oils and oil burners , i go for full on hippy sadlewood and ylang ylang type things - some might argue those are worse than air fresheners but at least they dont smell like they were developed in a nuclear power plant

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 14/01/2010 18:27

what is ylang ylang?

madhairingintothetens · 14/01/2010 18:27

YANBU. They are vile. My mum used to have them but I talked her out of them when I stayed at her house and had an asthma attack because she had one of those hideous glade things plugged into the wall in the room I was in. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 18:28

oh but my very very very worse smell in the entire world is zoflora disinfectant - my mother uses this and it makes me gag - When DD goes to her house, i have to put her clothes straight in the washing machine because i can smell it - she does it to disguise HER wet dog smell.

OP posts:
lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 18:29

ylang ylang is a flower i think, anyway, its an essential oil and very calming dont ya know

AuntieMaggie · 14/01/2010 18:31

because they live with the MNer who put garlic up her bum?

posieparker · 14/01/2010 18:32

I used to have a burner and got loads of lovely oils (rose, ylang ylang and geranium is my favourite blend) but now I have the candles made in Somerset...I love the gingerbread one and Jasmin.

ZZZenAgain · 14/01/2010 18:32

ach that's a wind up. No one wastes good garlic like that.

lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 18:34

garlic up her bum??? have i missed out on some new health craze??

you have candles made? blimey, is your real name Kirsty?? - im jealous

oh yes - forgot geranium, my absolute favourite, never been able to afford rose though.

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 14/01/2010 18:37

actually I was going to recommend that she try an anal shower. You know the thing where you kneel on the floor with your bum up, insert a tube anally which is raised up and hung over a shower rail attached to a big 5 litre can of water

Apparently it is very effective. Have yet to try it... My yoga teacher swore by it but amazingly I withstood the temptation

MaggieMnaSneachta · 14/01/2010 18:38

yeah i hate them too and my mother uses them. after the 'puff' she has an asthma attack 2 minutes later. she refuses to make the link though.

whomovedmychocolate · 14/01/2010 18:40

Vile. Common. Nasty.

YASNBU

and wasn't it ginger up the bum?

lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 18:40

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeen, but WHY?? i fail to see how that is going to make my house smell better without resorting to chemicals!!

OP posts:
lucyellensmumagain · 14/01/2010 18:41

Ginger??? thats even worse!!!

OP posts:
ZZZenAgain · 14/01/2010 18:41

you will be making less stink to cover up

Well not immediately, in fact quite the opposite I should think. But you have must see the long term picture here.

Ginger was it?

megapixels · 14/01/2010 18:42

YANBU. I always wonder about the obsession with giving the house an unnecessary, odd smell. Surely what you'd want is only no bad or stale odours? Open the windows for a few minutes everyday and a blast of fresh air will freshen up the house like no air freshener can.

posieparker · 14/01/2010 19:02

LEM

Candles made??? No the candles I buy are made in Somerset here and
here!!

I used to buy oils in Glastonbury from here but was never aware that rose absolute was expensive, so either I bought a lot and thought it was all more pricey than it was or it was cheaper then!!

posieparker · 14/01/2010 19:03

BTW I only burn one occasionally to make a smell not cover one up!!

tulpe · 14/01/2010 19:07

YANBU

We use a mixture of airing the house and using essential oils (am an aromatherapist). Favourite blends are frankincense & may chang or lavender, black pepper & geranium.

We also mostly use the Method cleaning products. Many of the major brands make me either heave or wheeze
