Yes children can be careless and beak things - and yes you get what you pay for.

But why are so many things so flimsy?

DS got a 'my first skalextric' for christmas which we only got out of the box this week - after three plays it's broken so I have to trek to argos for a replacement.

I'm sticking to the brio and thomas trains from now - can't go wrong.

Yep, i stick to playmobil as it seems to last.

Dd2 had her 3rd aqua draw this year, i swore to dh i wouldn't let her draw on it with pens (like she did with the others) and what happened? she drew on the bloody thing. I wont be buying another.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/01/2010 20:26

Yanbu.
We bought DS a plastic emergency service centre/garage type thing from Toys R Us for Christmas. It is now in the bin. Have promised DS the hoover from ELC as a replacement for it.
I know I am paid to think and tell customers that ELC products are much better quality, but I can now honestly say that they are!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 20:30

Oh aqua draws seem such a good idea bt they get so grubby so fast

We live in a throwaway culture, sadly.

Toys are not made to last, not the mass produced plastic toys sold cheaply in Toys R Us and tesco etc anyway, they are made cheaply and the companies don;t want them to last a lifetime, they want you buying more and more toys to replace the broken ones.

ELC are good, but even better are old fashioned toys, I got so sick of broken cheap matchbox cars that now I buy them for DS off Ebay, and only buy really old ones that are still made of metal and built to last.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 20:38

I love PLAN toys - I have a garage and a farm made by them that I'm sure I can pass to nephews/ friends children.

Playmobil
Schleich/Papo/Le Toy Van

All lovely, all £££'s.

But then, when I were a lass we didn't have as many toys, they were pricier but we only had a few "big" toys.

I agree, we now live in a throwaway culture

(oh and I have had a fair few ELC disasters, sorry)

overmydeadbody · 08/01/2010 20:49

What you need is little old biddies clearnig out their atticks and putting all their (now grown up) chilren's toys on ebay really cheap with no idea of their worth. I especially love the big boxes of matchbox/Corgi cars that you can get off ebay for a couple of quid, yeah the paint may be all scratched off, but they aren't going to break if I step on them in the dark

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 20:51

overmydeadbody - hahaha good plan!

I got some cars from poundland as xmas presents - oooh they hurt

I've learnt a lesson

you want these beauties

Yeah it bloody hurts, and then the roof always caves in on the cheapo ones!

Jamieandhismagictorch · 08/01/2010 20:58

Scalextric is a waste of money IME.

Another serial disappointer is Remote Control Cars

You cannot beat Lego/Duplo, IMO

overmydeadbody · 08/01/2010 20:59

if only I lived in Hull DS would love this

overmydeadbody · 08/01/2010 21:01

anoother good job lot

Agree about scaletrix and remote control toys, they always bloody break

firsttimemama · 08/01/2010 21:03

I don't rate ELC at all - very poor quality IMO. More dissapointing, as I had higher expectations of their stuff.

Lotster · 08/01/2010 21:05

I hear you sister. Bought my son one of those random packs of 12 cars on Amazon to go with his new car garage, and within one week they have fallen to bits.

I simply cannot be arsed to boxed them up and send back but why should I pay £10 for rubbish that leaves bits lying around for my baby daughter to choke on?!!

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 21:05

we have this for DS - was worth every penny

YANBU.

I bought dd a My Little Pony nursery (circa 1985) off ebay for a few quid a couple of years ago - it's still in perfect condition. However all the current My Little Pony stuff is absolute tat. So flimsy it's untrue.

Really disappointing. The only thing that seems as good now as it was then is Playmobil.

nappyzonecantrunfortoffee · 08/01/2010 21:11

i was really dissapointed with the go go hanster add on stuff - the garage and car thing just keeps falling to bits and has actually cracked where ds fell on it - ok its not deisgned for a 3 yr old to fall on but it shouldnt crack so easily and leave nasty sharp bits.

overmydeadbody · 08/01/2010 21:17

Lotster get his cars off ebay. Old corgi ones. They do not break.

Lego is still good.

Lotster · 08/01/2010 21:21

thanks!

snowedinwithJjandtheBean · 08/01/2010 21:37

YANBU

i just hate the majority of plastic shite anyway.

here its all Mellisa and Doug, im toys, pintoy, and so on,

wooden for most and always metal trucks and so on, although the CAT and JCB big trucks ds got from family are very tough, he uses them to remove his sister from his 'area'

Toysrus wooden range imaginations is good, ds got a wonderful easel

Coldhands · 08/01/2010 22:03

I have found some crap from ELC too, it did put me off with how shoddy it was. Although we have other stuff too, I find it really over priced though. I actually find Toys R Us pretty good. Particularly their Bruin range. We have loads and it all looks new a year later even though DS has played with it loads.

I also think Fisher Price Little People seems very good quality. I have bought some of it second hand from e bay and it doesn't look like it has been used.

But does anyone recommend a good garage? I wanted to get the £55 one from ELC but I saw it made up in the shop and while it looks very impressive, it seems like cheap plastic tat on closer inspection.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 22:07

I think the PLAN garage is fab if you have careful children.

DS is asd so he just trashed it

I second Corgi cars.My dds are playing with their Great Uncles Corgi cars from the 1950's and they may be a bit battered, but they are very sturdy and well made.My sister and I had them when we were little too.

The dd's also love playing with my old toy zoo,the base for it is still in it's original box with 'Britain's Toys,Made In England' on it,not many toys are made here any more.

Coldhands · 08/01/2010 22:12

Whats PLAN?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 08/01/2010 22:16

www.plantoys.com/

Fab - but look for secondhand on amazon/ ebay
