Yes children can be careless and beak things - and yes you get what you pay for.

But why are so many things so flimsy?

DS got a 'my first skalextric' for christmas which we only got out of the box this week - after three plays it's broken so I have to trek to argos for a replacement.

I'm sticking to the brio and thomas trains from now - can't go wrong.

Thanks, looks fab!! I was thinking a wooden garage over a plastic one, seems like much better quality to me.

I second the little people stuff, I've got the little people house that ds had for his first birthday, its been passed down to his sisters and stepsisters and is now 10 years old and in still in good condition. It's been sat on and used as a step by my youngest and it's still ok

The Plan tou garage has a screw/thread mechanism for the lift, it is not that robust and virtually imposs to repair. Gets cross threaded and then stuck.

Le Toy Van is a simpler mechanism, therefore (imho) a more sensible lift.

We got that emegency services garage/station thing this from Toys r us - it is a disgrace.

On the other had ELC rocket with space dog and all sorts seems indestructible.

We have a cate of brio track/trains etc that has done six children before us and it is still tip top

Little People stuff is great. Also try www.wowtoys.com/

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 09/01/2010 01:07

you know I used to think that the older toys were better - comparing the old little matchbox size cars that my brother and I had as kids (now in my possession) with the new plastic ones it seemed that the older ones were indestructable..........

Then DS3 came along >>

I second Wow Toys.

I don't like a lot of the plastic stuff either, but some things don't work so well in wood, IMO, and good quality, sturdy plastic is fine. And tin tea sets are cool.

One of my nephews recently got the game 'Guess Who', and it's so flimsy it barely stays together. It will be binned within a year or two, I'm sure. Meanwhile, my non-flimsy version of the game, probably purchased around 1980, is still going strong and in great condition. It's a real pain that this stuff has become so disposable.
