42 year old film director pregnant by 19 year old film star

23 year age gap and they're engaged and she's having a baby after a what appears to be a whirlwind romance. At 19, how long will he stick around with her for I wonder? That's not an age gap - that's a generation gap!

I know she's got pots of money and can easily support the child etc but it still doesn't sit right. Maybe it's wrong but there is something so distateful about older women and much younger men. It must be to do with the whole mothering/nurturing stereotype or something and it somehow seems incongruous. No one would bat an eyelid if she was the 19 year old and he was 42 though would they?.

I think it's quite intersting how people view these things.

If they are happy then why should it matter how old they are?

No, it could very well work. My 81.6yo neighbour married her man now 60 nearly 40 years ago when he was 20. They are the happiest couple.

Rindercella · 06/01/2010 23:36

No more shocking than the reverse. For me, a 19 year old would be a total turn off - my DSS is 19 and I am nearly 40. The thought of any of his spooty greasy friends is just yuk (how come 19 year olds didn't seem spotty & greasy when I was that age?! ).

But different strokes for different folks & all. YABU.

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 06/01/2010 23:53

well they are both adults, she clearly doesnt look her age and I really dont see the problem.

flockwallpaper · 07/01/2010 00:00

Good luck to them.

Curiousmama · 07/01/2010 00:06

She's been through the mill, good luck to them. She looks younger and he older than their years not that it matters.

My mother is 80 in June and her dp is 51. they're very happy...in fact she's 'younger' than him in a lot of ways.

It may not last, but I'm sure she can support herself and the baby. They're in love, so why not?

SolidGoldBloodyJanuaryUrgh · 07/01/2010 00:14

Certainly a lot less EWW than a teenage girl PG by a much older man because there's rather less likelihood of the 'relationship' being exploitative.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 07/01/2010 01:25

I don't see why it's less likely to be exploitative. He is young and starting out, she is older, well-connected and richer. This pregnancy has happened pretty quick, I hope he knows what he's in for. It'll probably be fine, I guess.

"It'll never last" might be a cliche but in this case it is true and I would stake my life on it.

If you were her friend/sister/mother you'd be a bit about it, surely?

She's infatuated, flattered and experiencing something of a a mid-life crisis I'd say. She's been through a lot. It's like Sadie Frost with that Jackson whatshisname chap.

I actually feel sorry for her. And her 12 year old daughter!

Wasn't her husband (ex) playing around with Lilly Allen? Seems they both like 'em young.

YANBU
it is eww. Would be eww the other way round as well. My DB is 19 - trying to imagine him engaged to a 43 year old and having a baby with her - I'd be fucking furious with her to be honest.
I think she's a flighty 'bohemian' type who floats around doing what she wants and avoiding thinking about reality. I only have that impression from two interviews I read but I am aware that she has survived cancer so that could be a load of bollocks.

I thought the comments in the article were bad enough but some of you are no better. It may work, it may not. But that's the same if they were both 42, both 19 or whatever. It's not against any laws and they are both free agents so why is it different to any other relationship? Good luck to them both, sounds like they need it with people saying ewww about their news. Charming.

MoChan · 07/01/2010 11:08

Relationships with big age gaps do work, and I don't think it should have people going 'eww'.

However, I would personally think twice about getting so involved with a nineteen year old. I didn't make any good decisions when I was that age...
