To think my normally sane DH is in danger of looking like a racist prick?

DH just forwarded me an email that has been forwarded to him and to other people at his work by one of his colleagues.

I'm hoping he's not forwarded it to anyone except me - it doesn't look like he has.

It's one of those ones called 'border law'. Just found a US version here - swap the US references to UK ones.

DH is just misguided, IMO, sending this on - he ought to know I'd find it offensive. But it's made me wonder if IABU to find it offensive and to think it's probably been written by someone in the US equivalent of the BNP or at least widely distributed by BNP supporters.

So - AIBU and, if IANBU, how would you tackle it with him? He's very lovely, kind, and, sometimes, misguided so I don't want to upset him. I had to stop myself replying with 'you know this email makes you look like a racist prick, don't you' but that's not really very nice, or helpful!

"See nothing to get worked up about- my only concern would be him messing about on work computers sending chain-y type emails of a non work related nature. Is this allowed?"

I think it's usually written into contracts that it isn't allowed.

Racism is being prejudiced against someone for no other reason than their race. Being prejudiced due to culture is xenophobia. This email is inaccurate. Three different things.

Being concerned about immigration doesn't necessarily make you a racist.

SantaWears2SnowShoes · 21/12/2009 17:17

bloody hell, do you all need to have a pop at daftpunk. she is allowed to post her opinion

noddyholder · 21/12/2009 17:19

Racist xenophobic ignorant and pooexplosion you pretty much represent what all sane mumsnetters think so I for one applaud you (saves me a job)

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 21/12/2009 17:20

smallwhitecat it is of course possible, in fact highly probable, that most people who disagree with me are not morons. While I always give the presumption of intelligence, when someone has repeatedly proven themselves to be otherwise I feel it is fine to call them so.
DP doesn't deny that she is racist, xenophobic, homophobic and many other things. She is proud to be a BNP voter.

And I'm proud to take any opportunity to insult a BNP voter as rigorously as possible. You could call it my hobby.

noddyholder · 21/12/2009 17:24

The thing is it is good to disagree it encourages debate but there is a huge difference between 'I like that dress' and 'I think its hideous'which is disagreeing and insulting whole swathes of society with insults and generalisations Sticking up for those people is just common decency

darcymum · 21/12/2009 17:26

If only that were true I would be on the first (illegal?) plane to the US. I think they actually chuck you in prison before deporting you, just like here.

seeker · 21/12/2009 17:28

daftpunk has "form" on this and similar subjects - she does nto need defending. She regularly posts inflammatory, offensive, recist and homophobic views and is completely unapologetic about them and refuses to take on board the fact that others might find her opinions objectionable.

SantaWears2SnowShoes · 21/12/2009 17:30

maybe so, but 2 wrongs don't make a right,
you can just ignore people you know.

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 21/12/2009 17:32

Yeah, but ignoring vicious views makes you complicit in spreading hatred. Someone has to counter it each and every time.
I'm lovely to everyone but BNP voters

SantaWears2SnowShoes · 21/12/2009 17:32

oh good that means you will be lovely to me

noddyholder · 21/12/2009 17:33

santa if everyone thought like that and never challenged hatred we would be up shit creek. It is not 2 wrongs it is one wrong

BananaPudding · 21/12/2009 17:45

Is a BNP voter equivalent to a US Republican? Or even worse?

duchesse · 21/12/2009 17:48

Banana- worse, much worse. Unless you count the far right of the party. It's worth a peek at their website, but you won't see the true BNP member represented there, only the window-dressed version.

Kaloki · 21/12/2009 17:49

"Is a BNP voter equivalent to a US Republican? Or even worse?"

They'd be the UK equivalent to the KKK if they could

SantaWears2SnowShoes · 21/12/2009 17:56

noddy, can't believe I got sucked in, I forgot my own golden rule, I must not let attentin seekers suck me in.
(are your feeling better?)

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 21/12/2009 17:57

The BNP leader has been to KKK rallies, photographed and all, so they aren't even ashamed about that. The BNP make the Republicans look like the Rainbow Coalition!

Some interesting details here, and for once wiki is quite accurate....

noddyholder · 21/12/2009 17:57

Am ok not better though Going in after xmas for 'investigations'

juicy12 · 21/12/2009 18:03

Are there really BNP voters on MN??? Well, what a lovely thought. FWIW, don't think the email is racist, just ignorant and definitely not the sort of thing you'd be wanting to forward on.

whifflegarden · 21/12/2009 20:15

"Loud clap of hands for pooexp" I think I love you.

As for the email, I wouldn't say it's racist, but it is bigoted. It's important to counter such views whenever we come across them so that we can make room for intelligent discourse about immigration and such like.

FlamingoCrimbo · 21/12/2009 20:17

Wowsers up your trousers!

What a stir I've caused.

Told DH, hours and hours ago and he saw my point of view and deleted it and is going to be far more careful from now on. Trouble is that he is a bit gullible and kind of thinks 'oh, a work colleague's forwarded it on so it must be ok to forward personal crap so I will do it; and I think it's funny because I haven't thought about what it really means or represents' IYSWIM.

Pikelit · 21/12/2009 20:22

I had to go out for a bit but would like to confirm that I hadn't labelled anyone as a racist. Nor was I assuming anyone was a member of the KKK. Although now I learn of DP's form, I make an exception.

I really don't get how people can be excused for forwarding this crap with "oh, I don't think they actually have that view". It's a bit like all these tossers who voted the BNP in in the European elections who allegedly aren't racist. Call them what they are, otherwise they think they can keep doing it without the stigma they deserve.

I couldn't be in a relationship with someone who found that funny and I think it'd cause a serious domestic issue if he did.

I had colleagues in an old work place forward things like that and I reported it to HR, and I would do it again.
