To think my normally sane DH is in danger of looking like a racist prick?

FlamingoCrimbo · 21/12/2009 13:40

DH just forwarded me an email that has been forwarded to him and to other people at his work by one of his colleagues.

I'm hoping he's not forwarded it to anyone except me - it doesn't look like he has.

It's one of those ones called 'border law'. Just found a US version here - swap the US references to UK ones.

DH is just misguided, IMO, sending this on - he ought to know I'd find it offensive. But it's made me wonder if IABU to find it offensive and to think it's probably been written by someone in the US equivalent of the BNP or at least widely distributed by BNP supporters.

So - AIBU and, if IANBU, how would you tackle it with him? He's very lovely, kind, and, sometimes, misguided so I don't want to upset him. I had to stop myself replying with 'you know this email makes you look like a racist prick, don't you' but that's not really very nice, or helpful!

There are myths on both sides. I do accept that there are rules which mean illegal immigrants are able to live only in the black economy: just as you I'm sure accept that there has been a great deal of weakness in their application which has been exploited.

However, the cry of racist means that a measured approach cannot possibly obtain. It is not racist to discuss immigration, especially when much of it concerns Caucasian immigration. The immediate cry of racist means kaboom.

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 17:45

"But you can work illegally without paying tax"

You can work legally too, without paying tax. Any cash in hand job makes this possible.

Anyway, how would you stop illegal immigrants? AFAIK they are trying to stop them, it's not an easy job as there is no fool proof answer.

Also WRT the NHS the only way to stop non-taxpayers using it would be to adopt an American healthcare system. Would anyone be happy with that?

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 17:46

I think a distinction needs to be made between asylum seekers, and economic migrants

We have seen a rise in immigration from former soviet satellite states such as Poland in recent years due to free movement within the EU. Are the objections here stated towards this immigration?

Or more towards asylum seekers?

Or all of the above?

We cannot discuss our country's immigration policy without making these distinctions- after all, the rules are different for each type of immigrant.

So, which part of our immigration policy is 'fucked up?'

WidowWadman · 22/12/2009 17:47

Flamingochrimbo - you're reading things into my postings I haven't said. I've nowhere said you should divorce your husband.

All I said is, that as long as thoughtlessness is an acceptable excuse for getting away with distributing hateful lies, people will never be forced to start thinking.

peacocks · 22/12/2009 17:52

Quite right Tethers. But the distinctions are difficult and moveable, and it's understandable why people get resentful. They are extremely complex, and the issue is further complicated by the disappearers. Then you get something like, say, the Gay and Lesbian Immigration Advice Centre and it all goes tits up as far as debate is concerned.

If you know the different ways they are treated it might be a good idea to post them (though it might take a while!) then they could be discussed properly.

WidowWadman · 22/12/2009 17:59

Erm, you cannot work legally without paying tax. Cash in Hand jobs, unless you earn under the threshhold are illegal.

As for draining resources - how is an immigrant who's paying the same tax as the indigenious population (unless he's on an emergency tax code in which case he pays more) draining the resources? And that without the right to vote in the general elections and have a say for what his taxes are used? Of course you can apply after a certain amount of time for citizenship (which I would if I had 800 quid to spare)

As people already have pointed out above - it's a lie that immigrants are getting everything handed on a golden plate.

From the "stealing of janyway, why should someone be worth more than another just because he happens to have been born in another plays, rather than growing the massive set of balls it takes to leave your home behind and make a living elsewhere.

daftpunk · 22/12/2009 18:04

Actually Pexp, it is people like you who send people to the BNP.
BNP voters feel like no one is listening to them, they feel ignored, and that their needs are not as important as immigrants.

I don't live in Burnley, I live in a fairly affluent London Suburb, but I care about the poorest people of this country, not the poorest people of other countries.

If that makes me a Nazi, I'll live with it.

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 18:04

"Erm, you cannot work legally without paying tax. Cash in Hand jobs, unless you earn under the threshhold are illegal."

After reading that back I forgot the speechmarks around "legally". It was more to make a point that it's something as available to British citizens as to illegal immigrants. If caught both groups pay the price.

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 18:05

"I don't live in Burnley, I live in a fairly affluent London Suburb, but I care about the poorest people of this country, not the poorest people of other countries."

Is it not possible to care about the poorest people everywhere without it being dependant on nationality?

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 22/12/2009 18:12

But you only care about the white, straight ones don't you DP?

You don't get it, you are a Nazi because you want to join the BNP, because you buy into their policies and you have a lot of hatred for many groups of people. BNP voters are not as important as anyone, they're the scum of the earth as far as I'm concerned.

So what do you do for the poor people in your area? Not a lot I'm guessing......

daftpunk · 22/12/2009 18:19

Pexp;

you are obsessed with the BNP and I'm not sure why. They are a legal legit political party, what the hell do you think they are going to do if they get a couple of MP's ?
line all muslims and homosexuals up against the wall and shot them ?

You are completely over the top.

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 18:25

Do I get a reply too DP, or was my question too reasonable?

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 22/12/2009 18:28

I happen to know the BNP of old, and they haven't changed, just smartend up to fool people like you.
No, they won't do that, but its what they would like to do. How on earth can you possibly think that a group of criminals who associate with the KKK, hold rallies where they give Nazi salutes and hang swastikas, and deny the holocaust could ever be a decent MP, or even a decent human being?

I'm not sure if you're deluded or naive, either way, you have backed the wrong pony.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 18:30

Not Notting Hill then, daftpunk?

(BTW, can you actually see me?)

peacocks I am no expert, but here are the guidelines on applying for asylum in the UK. Contrast that with the EU policy on free movement for citizens of member states within the EU

I want to know which process is 'fucked up'- I know it was not you who described it this way, but I'm directing the question generally IYSWIM...

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 18:31

Join the queue, Kaloki, I'm still waiting from this morning

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 18:32

Damn, maybe we should get numbered tickets?

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 18:34

Might look a bit too 'benefit scrounger'- they have them at the jobcentre, you know...

daftpunk · 22/12/2009 18:36

I know all about the BNPs history.

I think the fact that they are now in the public eye and open to scrutiny is a good thing, keeps them more mainstream.

Not sure where you live, but all European countries have their version of the BNP, France and Italy probably have far worse than Nick Griffin.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 18:39

Helloooooo?

Over here!

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 18:40

Maybe if we set them off she might notice?

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 18:50
tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 18:50

DP, is your pussy playing up again?

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 18:56

Naughty tethers, how dare you!

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 22/12/2009 19:01

The BNP have never been, are not, and never will be mainstream. They are far-right, I don't care how many times your Hitler esteemed leader goes on Newsnight, he's still a Nazi, and so are you.

France and Italy also have neo-Nazi parties, and your point is? I can assure you that my country does not have a version of the BNP.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 19:07

She has an anxious cat, Kaloki, she said so further up the thread.

Whatever did you think I meant?
