To think my normally sane DH is in danger of looking like a racist prick?

FlamingoCrimbo · 21/12/2009 13:40

DH just forwarded me an email that has been forwarded to him and to other people at his work by one of his colleagues.

I'm hoping he's not forwarded it to anyone except me - it doesn't look like he has.

It's one of those ones called 'border law'. Just found a US version here - swap the US references to UK ones.

DH is just misguided, IMO, sending this on - he ought to know I'd find it offensive. But it's made me wonder if IABU to find it offensive and to think it's probably been written by someone in the US equivalent of the BNP or at least widely distributed by BNP supporters.

So - AIBU and, if IANBU, how would you tackle it with him? He's very lovely, kind, and, sometimes, misguided so I don't want to upset him. I had to stop myself replying with 'you know this email makes you look like a racist prick, don't you' but that's not really very nice, or helpful!

"She has an anxious cat, Kaloki, she said so further up the thread.

Whatever did you think I meant?"

Haha, I was actually referring to you using free healthcare, but the alternative was too funny to correct.

saramoon · 22/12/2009 19:10

I work with asylum seekers and refugees as well as economic migrants, i teach English and have done for a long time. I don't really see this as racist really. It is a bit, as someone said before, DM.

Kaloki;

Yes, of course it's possible to care about the poorest people of all nationalities, you can give to charity etc, but only so much one country or person can do.

Have Bob Geldof or Bono got a hundred Africans camping in their back garden..? No, they just made crap charity songs and annoyed the whole world. I'm sure Africa was glad to see the back of them.

Tethers;

He's fine...purring beautifully.

Listen, I've just looked back over your questions and my replies will need alot of thought, and unfortuntely time isn't on my side tonight, infact I will be disappearing now for a few days (christmas and all that) I will have to meet up with you next week...

So, I will take this opportunity to wish you, and everyone on this thread, a very happy christmas and a peaceful and prosperous new year.

Stay Funky

"Yes, of course it's possible to care about the poorest people of all nationalities, you can give to charity etc, but only so much one country or person can do."

And what if the best charity you could give someone was a safe country to live in? I feel we should at least try, despite our problems we are still better off than a lot of countries.

Also, for once I agree with you Bob Gelldof and Bono are amazingly crap.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 19:23

Kaloki- queue jumper!!!

DP, I shall wait with baited breath... happy Christmas.

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 19:24

thethers - Nerner! :p

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 19:30

Bah.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 22/12/2009 19:30

"line all muslims and homosexuals up against the wall and shot them ? "

WelI, I don't want to burst your bubble DP, but the last time a party with policies similar to the BNP was in government... that's pretty much what happened, yes. Hence our concern.

Enjoy your christmas break. I can't imagine I can persuade you to read up on the Nazi party's rise to power, their policies and propaganda...
But maybe if you're looking for some holiday film viewing, you could try V for Vendetta?

abra1d · 22/12/2009 19:41

It's not racist. It may be unpleasant but it's not racist. In fact it doesn't seem to mention race at all. Nationalities, perhaps.

If I received something like that I'd just delete it. There are lots of nasty emails around.

skihorse · 22/12/2009 19:51

Thanks to Bob Geldof and his ilk, Ethiopia went from a population of 25 million (in Live Aid days) people living on an unhospitable piece of land to the 80 million we have today. "We" now have an extra 55 million mouths to feed who are living on an unhospitable piece of land.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 20:09

Yeah, skihorse, those bloody reproducing Ethiopians! We should've left them all to starve, that way they would have all died out- hey presto! "We" have even fewer mouths to feed!

Everyone's a winner.

skihorse · 22/12/2009 20:14

I'm just stating facts. We have enlarged the problem. There is no easy-on-the-heart solution, but as the resources of our planet run out and the population ever expands - if you give me a choice between MY child and a child on the other side of the world you can bet your arse which one I'll save. This is not black and white and it's not about "race" but in our lifetimes we are very likely to see a race for oil/water/food - we in Europe will (probably) be just hunky-dory thank you.

It remains an inhospitable piece of land - all the goodwill on all of god's earth will not change that anytime soon. Mother nature et al - this is why Siberia is not over-populated, nor the Yukon, nor northern Norway, etc., etc.

This is so off-topic now it's unbelievable but then so is labelling someone BNP just because they want to discuss immigration.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 20:20

"This is so off-topic now it's unbelievable but then so is labelling someone BNP just because they want to discuss immigration"

Hmm. Haven't actually done that anywhere on the thread, but hey- why let reality get in the way? Unless you were referring to someone else.

I'm having trouble reading your posts due to the tears of laughter in my eyes.

Are you Chris Morris? Is this Brass Eye?

Brilliant.

CloudDragon · 22/12/2009 20:24

Just makes you think abour how lucky we are not to live in any of those hell holes.

It is pure ignorance.

In my office you might end up discipline for sending potentially offensive stuff. My mate got suspended for sending a picture of Keith Chegwin wearing a pope's hat with the caption

'Cheggers plays pope'

so he should watch what he sends as imo that was far more offensive (and did I mention ignorant)

CloudDragon · 22/12/2009 20:27

and skihorse that is the most disgusting vile piece of racist shit I have read in a while.

congratulations.

So Labour wanted to encourage a multi-cultural society?

Those evil bastards.

It's a good job those bastions of truth and unbiased journalism at the Telegraph can show us the facts.

Kaloki · 22/12/2009 20:58

"This is so off-topic now it's unbelievable but then so is labelling someone BNP just because they want to discuss immigration."

I've only seen one person labelled a BNP supporter, and that's because they are

Skihorse - Ethiopia is a perfectly habitable and relativly hospitable piece of land. The famines were caused in large part by war and governments fucking shit up.

ooojimaflip · 22/12/2009 21:47

peacocks - you seem to believe that hypocrisy is a moral failing rather than an essential part of the human condition. I agree with your analysis of peoples motivations and priorities. I wouldn't criticise individuals for behaving in that way. I would behave in that way. That doesn't mean that it is ethically right though.

"How ridiculous to say: I know what's right, and you all have to do it, even if I'm incapable or don't want to, just because I think it's right. "

Well obvoiusly I didn't say that. I said that I know whats right, I don't expect it to happen but we should achnowledge that it is selfish. Pretending that there is an ethical reason for it is another hypocrisy.

ooojimaflip · 22/12/2009 21:52

BadgersPaw - you are trying to lead me into the dangerous grounds of practicality rather than principle. It's POSSIBLE that restricting immigration leads to more well being in the long run - hard to analyse.

I don't think we are to far apart in principle though - we are arguing about methods rather that aims.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2009 21:58

TheShriekingHarpy, I infer, you imply.

I never said I condoned it- I was commenting on the fact that the term 'multicultural society' could be bandied about like a term of abuse.

Good to know you have me down as a tabloid reader. This may come as a shock, but... none of the newspapers offer the truth in its entirety. Each has its own political agenda and bias. But I think you know that. Now who's being facetious?

That's why I tend not to link to newspaper articles as fact.
