Lonicera · 17/12/2009 08:52

it's a key life skill for everyone

Bonsoir · 17/12/2009 08:53

I think being able to drive is very basic skill for every adult.

Having said that, I am very glad not to be a regular car driver in Paris - driving is truly vile here!

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 17/12/2009 08:53

YABU - I don't drive, and right now have no intentions of learning. I have got to the grand old (?) age of 30, 3 DC - don't drive. So far no issues with it.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 17/12/2009 08:53

Depends entirely on your circumstances. I don't drive but I live in central London and transport is excellent. No use at all for a car. I've never missed not having one.

WeThreeNinks · 17/12/2009 08:53

I wish I could drive now that I'm stuck at home with a demanding toddler and the weather's shite

DH did warn me...

FolornHope · 17/12/2009 08:53

its like one of these things that ( money or friendly neighbour mate) permitting NEEDS to be done.
like er... getting married when you are pregnant, not then moaning on for years afterwards that " oh we neevr got around to ir and i really want to"

sheesh

OP posts:
FolornHope · 17/12/2009 08:54

yes the london argument is ofen proposed

tehn you leave london ( gasp!!!!) or go abroad and you look a right nincompoop

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 17/12/2009 08:55

yes

otherwise how can you drive off into the sunset in a convertible?

a girl's got to dream

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 17/12/2009 08:55

I bow to pressure a few years back and had a few lessons, but they were expensive, and having insurance, extra petrol (assuming I would then have been using the "family" car), etc etc just seemed like a silly amount to pay.

FolornHope · 17/12/2009 08:56

..imagine the derision if you said " ah its ok i live in norwich and like getting the number 9a to Lakenham so its ok!

OP posts:
butadream · 17/12/2009 08:56

I think it is a key skill for anyone even if you do live in central London but it is one of those things that you don't realise quite how big a difference it makes until you do it. I really hope my DC can learn before they leave school as it is harder to find the time for lessons later on.

brimfull · 17/12/2009 08:56

I do agree

especially when women whinge about not being able to drive

I don't live in London, I've never lived in London (and never want to either ), I have also lived abroad where there was no "public trasnport service" to speak of (just "combies"). I never looked like a nicompoop there.

FolornHope · 17/12/2009 08:56

i know of a mum whose olde kids once told her that being able to drive made her "a proper mum"

but the kids were pretty vile to her most of the time tbh

OP posts:
FolornHope · 17/12/2009 08:57

no i am sorry
you need to be able to get out and about.
its so liberating!

OP posts:
FolornHope · 17/12/2009 08:58

like the poor lady wiht the alcoholic h and has to take two busses to a kids footie match as he was out being drunk

OP posts:
Awassailinglookingforanswers · 17/12/2009 08:58

ermm I can get out and about.

FolornHope · 17/12/2009 08:58

belgo · 17/12/2009 08:58

YABU.

I would much prefer that fewer people could drive rather then even more. There are too many cars on the road as it is.

It is possible to travel and do everything you want to do without driving.

TheGoatofChristmasPast · 17/12/2009 08:59

yes, my mother doesn't drive and we lived in teh middle of nowhere. it was a right pita. i can understand not having a car blahdeblah but get your licences ffs.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 17/12/2009 08:59

Yep - YABU. I do leave London and have spent 5 out of the last 7 years living abroad. Somehow I have managed and am pretty confident that I don't look like a 'nincompoop'. I'm off abroad again next year for three years and, guess what, still don't need to drive......

brimfull · 17/12/2009 08:59

but it takes twice as long and is a pita
