To tell DS he can't have a skateboard from the US? Mumsnet Jury, I shall abide.

He says it's completely impossible for him to get his 'dream skateboard', which he has custom built, here in the UK. He says he must get it shipped from some warehouse in the US.

The thing is, he's 9. I can't believe, for the life of me, that a 9 year old cannot find a suitable skateboard on home soil. It seems extravagant to me environmentally, financially and just on so many levels.

He says I'm mean.

For me it has little to do with the money as it wouldn't actually cost a huge amount more.

So I will abide by your decision.

I am a weed and would probably get it for him . If it was something he was really desperate for .

BrianGiggs · 14/12/2009 18:53

we use route one for them

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 18:55

Brian Giggs he says he checked the route one website and they didn't even have the deck he wanted.

I can't help thinking though, how does a nine year old who is pretty new to skateboarding know what deck he wants/needs?

He says he's no novice. He can kick flip. Is that good?

knowing whereabouts you are in the country, if your ds is skateboard mad and can't find one to his taste where you are - then i am v. ed

noddy's ds might have a clue

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 18:57

That's what I thought Custy. You can't move for skate dudes around here. Surely to God ...

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 18:59

Well my ds is 15 and has been skating since 9 and although he insists on certain boatds trucks etc he has always got them here!

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:00

Route one a def no no for serious skaters according to ds

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 19:02

So where does he go Noddy?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:04

Well ds says Stevies in the laines supports brighton skaters which is under cool hand luke.Apparently route one does all the brands or can get them and is a haven for yummy mummies (his words),

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:04

Which type is it?

alarkaspree · 14/12/2009 19:06

Okay I know nothing about skateboards and I agree it seems ridiculous that he can't get one in the UK. But I'm not sure why you are so unwilling to indulge him. Financially you've said it's not much more expensive, environmentally if he bought one from here it would have been made in and shipped from China anyway. So what difference would it make really?

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 19:06

It's a zero with different trucks, wheels etc.

OP posts:
Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 19:08

Well Alarkaspree ... um ... um ... well it wouldn't arrive in time for Christmas. He says he doesn't mind that.

Also though, what if it goes wrong? There's no comeback. I'm not going to send it oversees if it goes wrong.

It's a skateboard!!! He's not an olympic skateboarding champion but a 9 year old boy!

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:08

Route one do zero but ds says they are gay(sorry)!Stevies sells british ones and independent.I am sure you can get one here! How often does he skate?

OrmIrian · 14/12/2009 19:11

Nope. Sorry. DS is 12 and very keen on skating but even he makes do with stuff he can get in the UK (loads of imported stuff anyway). His current object of desire is a Plan B Sheckler deck (no trucks or wheels) with a Ferrari logo. FF f-ing quid for a piece of shaped wood

He's being a bit too high-maintenance IMO

Tell him to look at Momentum - they are luverly.

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 19:13

No offense take Nods.

What skateboards does he think are non gay and what does he have?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:13

show him this all these boys in ds's film have brighton boards and are v cool!!!

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 19:15

That should say no offence taken noddy. Obv.

OP posts:
noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:15

Death or enjoi or flip and pigcity which is a brighton board

OrmIrian · 14/12/2009 19:16

enjoi are very pretty - pandas all over them

It's heartbreaking - some of them are real works of art and they get trashed within a few hours.

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:18

Apparently enjoi the best zero are for pros on the zero team and are apparently not cool unless you are one of them.Just relaying all this from ds Am trying to get him to stop saying gay having no luck!

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 19:20

Excellent link Noddy. It produced cries from DS of 'I've grinded in exactly that spot!!' and 'Look a variel kick flip!' etc.

Where is Stevies?

Will now look at Momentum. Thanks Orm.

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:21

Its in the north laine under cool hand luke next to teh sausage shop !

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 19:22

My ds not in it much sa he made it!can you come on saturday even for a quick drink?

Earthstar · 14/12/2009 19:24

It sounds a bit of a brattish attitude, but although you say it is an extravagant decision financially you then say there is little difference in price!

If your primary objection is environmental ie uneccesary airmiles then just stand by your decision and explain it.

I think it would be far cooler to customise a board himself, at home.
