To tell DS he can't have a skateboard from the US? Mumsnet Jury, I shall abide.

He says it's completely impossible for him to get his 'dream skateboard', which he has custom built, here in the UK. He says he must get it shipped from some warehouse in the US.

The thing is, he's 9. I can't believe, for the life of me, that a 9 year old cannot find a suitable skateboard on home soil. It seems extravagant to me environmentally, financially and just on so many levels.

He says I'm mean.

For me it has little to do with the money as it wouldn't actually cost a huge amount more.

So I will abide by your decision.

Your ds made that? Wow! Brilliant. I'm very impressed.

This Saturday? Where are you going then? Have I missed a Christmas meet thread? DS has a gig at around 1pm but am around later.

Will have a look at these other makes. I really would rather support local or at least national businesses and not get boards from the US.

does he look after them though mincey?

we refused similar demand as ds doesnt.
we are rank amateurs though

Mincepiedermama · 14/12/2009 22:09

Good point Brian. He has all too frequently left them in the unlocked shed at school this term.

It's a very good point.

or out in the garden
so we said no
and he is 11

noddyholder · 14/12/2009 22:37

ds has been losing and ruining stuff all his life but never a board Stay amateurs it gets more annoying! But it is hard to as some people get add=icted ds is one of those he lives it.It has definitely stopped some of the drinking/drugs/girlfriends that his schoolfriends do as he always has to be up for skating and no time for other.

Mincepiedermama · 15/12/2009 00:38

Yes it's definitely a wholesome activity and to be encouraged. I think I'll take him to one of the skate shops you speak of to chat with the staff.

SOrry momentum are wheels only I was thinking of another brand whose name escapes me.

You can tell DS#1 is away

Rainbowinthesky · 15/12/2009 08:01

Ds (nearly 14) is hugely into skating and can get his ones here. (expensive hobby but soo much better than sitting in front of a games console all day).

seeker · 15/12/2009 08:07

Using the word 'gay" as a derogatory term at the age of 9 would mean no skateboard from the States if he was mine. Sorry if I'm sounding harsh but I think it sounds as if he's being a bit of a brat and he should make do with what he can get in this country until he's been skating for a long time.

noddyholder · 15/12/2009 08:52

Seeker that was my ds to be fair.He is 15/16 and they all say it.He is well aware that it is not pc but i'm sure he'll grow out of it!

seeker · 15/12/2009 11:51

They might 'all" say it, but that doesn't make it acceptable. I don't know if my children use the word out of my hearing, but they know that a ton of bricks and no skateboard would descend on them if I heard them say it. However, that's another topic. I still think that there are plenty of good boards available in this country and I presume that all his friends don't have imported boards.

noddyholder · 15/12/2009 12:42

I didn't say it was acceptable but its a fact that teenagers say all sorts of things that aren't!And no none of us know what they say out of earshot.

OrmIrian · 15/12/2009 12:51

kates skates is a good site for most brands.

I jump up and down on my DC when they say 'gay', seeker. It means they don't use it (as much) in front of me. But I don't doubt that they use it elsewhere

OrmIrian · 15/12/2009 12:53

Some beauties here

noddyholder · 15/12/2009 12:56

Some of them look amazing I have a great pic somewhere of ds in new york in a skate shop and the display is like a work of art! They are expensive though but not as bad as ds suddenly deciding to film all his friends and make skate videos cameras a lot more ££££££ driving me mad atm
