For all you proud mothers whose children were Mary a cautionary tale

manicbmc · 24/02/2011 11:50

And my dd was an innkeeper and hates netball. Grin

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 24/02/2011 11:51

DD was Mary in reception. Now, in Year 1, she and Joseph are on the School Council.

She only had a bit part in Peter Pan but my curse must have worked because the crocodile and 2 lost boys were sick on stage and the whole thing was a washout, they won't dare to slight her again!

eileenslightlytotheleft · 24/02/2011 11:54

I was gutted not to be Mary in the school play - my best friend was because she was blond and serene-looking Angry. I did get the lead in every other play... and I did go on to play centre. I think the netball position was more because my sister had been centre before me. It was certainly nothing to do with natural ability - I was useless.

belgo · 24/02/2011 11:55

I was a shepherd. Two years running. I never once got a place on the netball team, or any other team. Do I fit the theory?

fizzyliftinggas · 24/02/2011 11:57

I was Mary in Primary School, but was far too busy, smoking/eyeing up boys/generally thinking I was cool, to play netball, I think I remember playing once! Hmm

KatieWatie · 24/02/2011 12:21

I was Mary and was either Centre or Wing Attack. I preferred WA though.

Weird but interesting!

mitochondria · 24/02/2011 13:02

I was Mary. Always last to be picked for the netball team. Not being able to catch a ball is a bit of a problem, netball-wise.

MogadoredMemoo · 24/02/2011 13:11

I was Mary and I was often picked as centre. Never had a boyfriend though, don't think I even looked at a boy til I was 17.

NotSoPukeyMummy · 24/02/2011 13:37

I was Mary in the nativity play. I played WD at netball (second team) and was then dropped from the team when someone better came along. Useless at school sports.

(I was chosen to be Mary because I was a swot/good girl. I was (and still am, thanks to the wonders of hair dye!) a brunette.)

KurriKurri · 24/02/2011 13:42

I was not Mary (I was some sort of lesser angel, not Gabriel - bitter me?) I was centre in the netball team though (with occasional forays into WA) - mainly I think because I was too short to play any other positions.

AbsDuCroissant · 24/02/2011 13:47

Never ever Mary, though desperately wanted to be. Was the Angel Gabriel once (but apparently that's because the original choice fell ill). Was generally goal defence for the winning team, so I could just faff about around my end of the court while everyone else ran around. Quite enjoyed it actually. Never made the netball team though, this was in PE classes.

I bet that LeQueen was Mary.

EdgarAleNPie · 24/02/2011 13:54

4th shepherd/ 5th angel
reserve netball
no boyfriend until 6th form , and then he was a loser.

cumbria81 · 24/02/2011 14:31

I was a sheep and was GA.

No success with boys, social outcast.

shewasashowgirl · 24/02/2011 14:40

I wasn't Mary but was centre!!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 24/02/2011 15:24

I was innkeeper in the Nativity, and Right Back in all team sports - right back in the changing rooms!

gordyslovesheep · 24/02/2011 15:47

mary - GA

JimBobSquintPants · 24/02/2011 15:53

Gawd no. I'm a primary school teacher and mostly you give the part of Mary to kids who can sit still and quiet and wouldn't be able to manage to remember loads of lines . Frequently Mary is only required to follow the donkey around the hall and not drop baby tiny Jesus Tears when putting him in the manger (whilst 200 women whisper to their husbands...'if only it was that easy'). It's not the starring role it used to be. Now it's an owl or a bossy king or a cheeky star who just needs to learn how to shine blah blah.

Absolutely no corrolation between Centre and Mary.
I preferred WA m'self.

KatieWatie · 24/02/2011 16:38

I thought for Centre you had to be tall because you have to jump up and get the ball when the teacher flings it in the air at the beginning? That's why I thought I was picked for Centre anyway... It can't have been my ball skills as I had none!

Spinkle · 24/02/2011 16:48

Ha ha ha.

Well, let me tell you what the criteria I use to pick the 'Mary's' in the Nativity plays.

(this is only the school I teach at of course, not universal or owt)

Generally we pick the girl least likely to be able to do anything else. She generally gets paraded around the hall, led by Joseph and a kid dressed up to be a donkey.

The most able get to be the innkeeper: FACT.

I personally like to choose the least photogenic girls for angels.

I like to think it evens things out a bit, for the future and all.

dinkystinky · 24/02/2011 18:59

I was a sheep

I dont do netball

noodle69 · 24/02/2011 19:02

I was Mary 3 times twice for church and once for school. I was also Maid Marion at school. I always got the best drama parts but there is no way I would have got on the netball team! I was awful at sports

Cursingtheboobytum · 24/02/2011 19:04

Nah, not at my school. Mary was the smellie kid with the taped glasses and lazy eye. An obvious (even to us 5 year olds) attempt to boost her self-esteem. I don't remember her ever playing netball.

noodle69 · 24/02/2011 19:05

'I was gutted not to be Mary in the school play - my best friend was because she was blond and serene-looking'

That was blatantly the reason I got it to. I was told I had the 'look' to play Mary by both the school and church even though I have blond hair and blue eyes? That evened confused me when I was in primary school.

loler · 24/02/2011 19:12

I was a pig in the stable, wasn't this in the days of the jews Confused and was second reserve for the netball team (meaning I never ever got to play). I believe the correlation between mary and centre to be completely true!

My ds1 was Joseph this year I hope this means he grows to be great at netball.
