i don't get it.

why should i be expected to turn out on a bloody chilly evening to watch some unknown bod who thinks they are something special for once appearing in an episode of hollyoaks (or something) to flick a switch to light up the town with garish neon blue lights in November?

We had Diversity (winners of BGT) switch ours on a couple of weeks ago. They expected a crowd of 2000 but got 8000 instead. It was hideous, plus it poured with rain. I took the children back home again.

ShowOfHands · 26/11/2009 19:23

Fimbo, I was there. I have never heard so much screaming.

The week later or before, I forget, it all blurs, Stavros Flatley turned on the lights at the other shopping centre. Did you see FC switch on the main lights?

PersonalClown · 26/11/2009 19:28

We had Diversity at the next town over here too. Miss Frank from X Factor in ours
My cousin went and told me that girls had bunked school/college to get a good view of the lads and had been there all day!!

I wonder if some 'sleb' will switch on my Christmas lights?? They go to the opening of an envelope, don't they?

FimboFortunaFeet · 26/11/2009 19:30

SOH - after the Chapelfield fiasco we didn't bother. Never mind I am putting my own up at the weekend, well trees not lighting the whole street.

muggglewump · 26/11/2009 19:39

Stavros Flatley were near us last weekend.
I think they are great, I voted for them and even changed my name on here, but no way was I getting cold and wet to go to Clydebank.
It's a shitehole, not that nice place.

YANBU.

lou33 · 26/11/2009 19:40

damon hill is doing ours tomorrow

DanDruff · 26/11/2009 19:41

funny that, lou...

Wilts · 26/11/2009 19:42

Lorraine Chase did ours last week

southeastastra · 26/11/2009 19:43

ha did she go on about luton airport

southeastastra · 26/11/2009 19:43

or are you in luton? that would be inspired

differentID · 26/11/2009 19:43

Our town has it's lights going on Saturday. We have Postman Pat. Beat that

Wilts · 26/11/2009 19:49

southeastastra- haha no idea if she went on about Luton airport. I didn't trust myself to go, after all the urge to run after trying to grab an autograph would have been huge

lou33 · 26/11/2009 19:52

funny why?

LynetteScavo · 26/11/2009 19:53

We have an ex-eastenders actress on Saturday. There will be fireworks, which is a good idea because they've been bringing out the same crappy lights for the past 50 years.

ShowOfHands · 26/11/2009 19:59

The main lights switch on was okay actually but not blow your socks off stuff.

Do you want me to come and switch yours on for you Fimbo? I'm as famous as some of the people they hire. I met Keith Chegwin once and if you look very carefully you can still see the horror etched upon my retinas. So by proxy, I'm almost famous.

And have you see the tree that's replaced the ice rink?? You mark my words, a strong gust of wind and it will topple down onto some emo kid's head.

YanknCock · 26/11/2009 20:01

Apparently ours have already gone on (12th of November!) and it was some X-Factor contestant. Meh.

weaselm4 · 26/11/2009 20:02

Ooh, let's have a competition to see whose celebrity is the most Z list!

I nearly ran Keith Chegwin over with my son's buggy once, incidentally.

weaselm4 · 26/11/2009 20:02

Oh, and YANBU!

lou33 · 26/11/2009 20:03

why only nearly?

I didn't want my DS to have an uncomfortable bump, Lou

PheasantPlucker · 26/11/2009 20:07

Oh, dd2 and I are just back from Anita Dobson setting off some fireworks at the 'Winter Wonderland' (the lights were a bit nondescript to be honest) and it was ace!

TrillianAstra · 26/11/2009 20:12

YANBU - don't see why you would want to watch someone switch the lights on. Nothing to see.

southeastastra · 26/11/2009 20:13

someone (on here i think) had peppa pig, though lots complained as she's obviously very short and no-one thought to put her on a box or something

we have no-one special i think probably some local councillor or equal bore will do it

theslightlypeckishcaterpillar · 26/11/2009 20:59

We have the chap who works in Homebase switching ours on.

There was a fb campaign and he got more votes than Johnny Depp.

He's really lovely and funny though, and I guess is a bit of a local sleb.
