to think that LOL is irritatingly overused

Surely it is only relevant when something actually makes you laugh out loud? I've noticed on facebook that people seem to punctuate their sentences with lol, e.g. 'went into town today but it was raining lol. Was well busy so I came home lol. Now kids are in bed and I have a headache so I'm getting an early night lol'

I visulise these people having conversations peppered with 'Lol'

My 1st AIBU- I thought I'd start small

Montifer · 24/11/2009 10:26

YANBU, it is unnecessary and a bit annoying. Maybe these people have a nervous laugh.

WouldYouCouldYouWithaGoat · 24/11/2009 10:28

i always mentally put a 'you don't have to be mad to work here but it helps' sign next to lolers.

SkipToMyLou · 24/11/2009 10:28

LOL always makes me think of this

Last0rders · 24/11/2009 10:30

SkipToMyLou · 24/11/2009 10:34

I much prefer to ROFL anyway.

Last0rders · 24/11/2009 10:34

But I do hate it, so thats enough from me. Sorry

SkipToMyLou · 24/11/2009 10:35

that's ok

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 24/11/2009 10:37

I'm not sure I've ever rolled on the floor laughing! Or, thankfully, pmsl

OP posts:
upahill · 24/11/2009 10:37

I don't mind it . It sums up the context of the text or email.

Sometimes it can be difficult to see if someone is being serious or not with a text. The LOL lets the recipcant know that the previous comment has been taken in good spirit.

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 24/11/2009 10:39

Good point upahill. I tend to for this reason but I know some people hate emoticons so maybe I'm being a bit U!

nymphadora · 24/11/2009 10:40

Lastorders Me too

wukter · 24/11/2009 10:43

Ladyanonymous · 24/11/2009 10:50

Hate hate hate lol....and all the others...whats wrong with a smiley face?

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 24/11/2009 10:50
OP posts:
flyingcloud · 24/11/2009 10:58

I hate all of them (although I do use emoticons sometimes). If someone doesn't understand you well enough then you need to explain yourself better. I am not really bothered with someone reading into the 'tone' of what I have written.

If someone has posted/texted/written something that is genuinely laugh-out-loud funny then tell them using words and descriptions. It's like using multiple exclamation marks, or the overuse of single exclamation marks.

Sorry, I am venting my rage after having a row with a civil servant about my passport renewal. I don't really mind that much about it all.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 24/11/2009 11:44

I don't like it at all so YANBU. I do occasionally LOL and will post that I have truly lol'd.

gagamama · 24/11/2009 11:52

I hate 'lol'. And you're totally right, people do just stick them everywhere, not even remotely when they would be likely to be laughing.

I do like other web acronyms though. I have started to say 'OMG' in actual conversation (tongue in cheek though, I have to say) and did have a little giggle at a car with the number plate WTF recently. Geek, moi?
