to think that LOL is irritatingly overused

Surely it is only relevant when something actually makes you laugh out loud? I've noticed on facebook that people seem to punctuate their sentences with lol, e.g. 'went into town today but it was raining lol. Was well busy so I came home lol. Now kids are in bed and I have a headache so I'm getting an early night lol'

I visulise these people having conversations peppered with 'Lol'

My 1st AIBU- I thought I'd start small

YANBU

My MIL thinks it means "lots of love" and always signs everything with a LOL then her name most odd !

RockBird · 24/11/2009 11:54

I use it whenever I've chuckled at anything, so if someone writes something and it's made me chuckle I'll start with Lol to let them know their humour was appreciated lol

JackBauer · 24/11/2009 11:54

YANBU. I had a text chat the other night with my mates DH (long story) and he kept adding lol into every sentence. Gotta go, lol. Speak soon, lol.

And I thought he was perfectly normal.

I have noticed it taking over but be aware of something as my mum and MIL always sign off emails with lol, meaing Lots Of Love.

They thought everyone on Facebook was sending lots of love to each toher and got very confused until I explained. Bless.

NanaNina · 24/11/2009 12:06

Oh god I thought this was just me feeling totally irritated with this lol thing and thought it must be because of my age! So glad to hear I am not alone.

meltedchocolate · 24/11/2009 12:09

It is used so often that i THINK 'Lol' - How sad is that???!!!

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 24/11/2009 14:23

Well I'm glad it's not just me! I shall continue to stick to my principles and only use it when I've actually laughed audibly

I hate it but see it has its place.

Its just wierd though when my 65 year old uncles facebook page is peppered with LOLs like a preteen girls.

MrsVik · 24/11/2009 15:01

It can get annoying if it's overused, especially if it's written in caps - really makes someone come across as a bit manic.

You should see this clip as a good example of internet abbreviation satire!

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 24/11/2009 15:26

Mrs Vik I at that clip!

Your right people do stick them everywhere, and i hold my hands up, i can't help it and i hate it!!!!!! had to stop myslef putting them on here, but it's so hard when their are no or on FB.

EyeOfFrogSpawnChorus · 24/11/2009 15:37

I prefer "hahahaha!"

Although it does have undertones of mania. Hahahahahahaha!

bibbitybobbityhat · 24/11/2009 15:47

Completely agree that it is overused, and I have seen conversations just like the one in the op and thought

BUT

I do use lol myself, when something has made me laugh out loud (often happens on here) as I much prefer that to "oh slubber, you've just made me spray tea all over my keyboard" or "blimey, you made me laugh so much a little bit of wee came out" etc.

Tidey · 24/11/2009 15:50

I quite like 'Muahahaha' as it has something of the evil genius Bond villain about it.

Spacehoppa · 24/11/2009 15:57

Fnargh, fnargh. Strokes computer in absence of a pussycat.

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 24/11/2009 17:57

I love Muahaha!

Well, you could be tres chic and use the french BDR (Beaucoup de Rires) if you prefer?

I believe it translates as 'Many Smiles' which is much nicer anyway

YANBU, it irritates the bejesus out of me. Someone wrote on my friend's facebook wall, 'How was Portugal lol', as if it is a modern alternative to a question mark.

You must have read my mind it drives me mad.

LOL ROFLMAO.

I have people on first book who use it hundreds of times a day aargh!!!!!!

MrsChemist · 25/11/2009 00:47

Everytime I see ROFLMAO I have to sing this song

I few years back I realised I was a lolaholic, but I've been clean now for over a year, thanks to the help from my friends and family who were sick of all the lolling.

Pikelit · 25/11/2009 00:53

Hate it. I'm surprised people's heads haven't fallen off altogether with all this lolling.

What I particularly detest is how "lol" so often follows a statement of breathtaking rudeness. Presumably we are supposed to think the arrogant cunt who concluded their message thus was merely joshing. lol.

Tortington · 25/11/2009 01:20

16 year old dd at hearing something funny "ha! lollage!"

she is doing English A-level - theres no hope

Spottyotter · 25/11/2009 01:40

Vile.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/11/2009 07:41

An alternative could be 5, ha is Thai for the number five so 555 would be hahaha, 5555 would be hahahaha, 55555 would be.........
