I drive a 4 x 4 and send my child to a private school. I like to think I am considerate esp when parking and getting in and out as I know its big and takes up a lot of room. To the OP you sound like you have quiet a chip on your shoulder. No hint of jealousy at all in your post..... not one bit.....

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 13:28

and there is goes again same phrase yet again boring isn't it. blah blah blah

fannybanjo · 23/11/2009 13:28

Mintycane, I am not wealthy, believe you me. I have had my DH lose his business because of the recession, we had to sell our home at a HUGE loss, remove our daughter from her school twice and start all over again. We haven't earned a penny since last November and have lived off the generosity of my parents savings(they are far from wealthy) until we sold our house. Everything we have worked for for 13 years was lost. Not once have we relied on the state and we will get back to a place were we are at least able to pay our bills as we have started another business and hopefully it will be successful.

I don't think you have a chip on your shoulder nor are you as narrow minded as probably people think you are being but I would think a bit of humility wouldn't go amiss and don't make misconceptions on people who you don't know or know anything about.

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 13:31

If you read back through the thread you would find that I said that it had nothing to do with private schooling and both sides were just as bad.

I don't recall mentioning your level of wealth either.

Lizzylou · 23/11/2009 13:32

Here we go again:

The You're just jealous/got a chip on your shoulder v the inverted snobs

The woman in the Op was just an inconsiderate twassock, there are loads of them everywhere.

4x4's are (in the main) unnecessary, vulgar and mostly badly driven/parked though

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 13:32

"narrow minded as probably people think you are being"

I have nothing against people who privately school their children. I object to anybody who does have an opinion being told that they only have it becasue they feel inferior.

LynetteScavo · 23/11/2009 13:34

And now fannybanjo feels she has to justify her family finances to us all...sheesh....it's none of any ones buisness on this forum!

smallorange · 23/11/2009 13:35

I can also see there are parking problem schools no matter what - but it is the sheer size of them that is breathtaking sometimes -so large that the driver cannot turn into our street without driving part of the way on thewrong side of the road! Or so it seems from what I have witnessed.

I'm not an inverted snob. I just think these people should get a fucking grip and buy a sensible car for city driving. Not drive into town in some monster truck. We live here and at some point all three of my DDs are going to have to cross that road on the way to school. That's all.

OooohWhatAFuss · 23/11/2009 13:37

MintyCane, you said that it is OK to take the piss out of the more fortunate, but how do you tell who is fortunate/lucky and who works harder than others? Some people have less money because they have not had lucky breaks or got the necessary qualifications, some have less money because they don't work through choice/try to play the system. So maybe it would be better to take the piss out of the very lucky AND the lazy articles... Oh no, that would be wrong because one of these groups is 'poor'.

Lizzylou · 23/11/2009 13:42

I didn't say that you were an inverted snob, smallorange, I agree with you about 4x4's.

As Pag said earlier, this is just one topic among many on MN that seems to polarise people and lead to sweeping generalisations.

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 13:44

I didn't say it was OK. I said I thought it should really be considered more acceptable that taking the pis out of the unfortunate because you would think that the fortunate would have more capacity to shrug it off.

In general I don't think taking the pis out of any group is a good thing. I do think having a bit of a sense of humour is a good idea though.

Francasaysrelax · 23/11/2009 13:44

I don't think that "working harder" will necessarily make you wealthy. I know lots of people who work hard, but don't earn much.
Apart from this, I like to take the piss of 4x4 because they are huge, they pollute a lot and are quite unnecessary in urban areas, where they seem to thrive.

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 13:44

sorry about spelling

fannybanjo · 23/11/2009 13:46

Miintycane - what was your reply at 13.11 insinuating then? You were quoting my reply about taking the piss out of people who are fortunate and said that I am lucky to be fortunate.

If someone wants to purchase a 4x4 with their hard earned money, fair play. If one is driven at my child at speed and mounts the kerb and do them serious harm then I would probably start a campaign to have them banned but to scowl at people who drive one is laughable.

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 13:47

OooohWhataFuss what you did was read several posts and attribute them to me when they were not mine. I didn't actually say anything unpleasant about people who send kids to private school at all. I do not think there is any reason to own a 4x4 in a city but that is another matter.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/11/2009 13:48

FIL is a farmer, and is mightily rude about 4x4 drivers. Even in the country. He drives a smallish hatchback. And a tractor.

WouldYouCouldYouWithaGoat · 23/11/2009 13:48

yes people can buy fucking armoured tanks for all i care but i reserve my right to consider them wankers for doing so.

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 13:50

Well if you are determined to be deemed unfortunate that is up to you I suppose.

I was just pointing out that in general people who send kids to private school are fortunate enough to be able to afford it.

They are therefore usually fortunate to be wealthy high acheiving individuals and as such I find them taking the piss out of the poor more offensive than the reverse.

pagwatch · 23/11/2009 13:53

My dad died without a penny and he was the hardest working person I have ever met. People who have money are incredibly lucky and should be able to laugh at themselves.

My irritation was/is about assuming that people from certain groups have certain views - the assumption that people who send their children to private school don't give a shit about anyone else.
But that point is getting lost so I am orf..

WouldYouCouldYouWithaGoat · 23/11/2009 13:54

watch it pag. i am a cyclist!

fannybanjo · 23/11/2009 13:59

Oh for fucks sake Minty, you aren't able to quantify what I am trying to say. I am not deeming myself as unfortunate, I am simply stating that you have no idea what people go through when you are saying that some people are fortunate and some aren't.

For example my MIL is on state benefits, lives in a Council house and hasn't worked for 20 years. She never has to worry about paying her bills as she has no mortgage, little council tax to pay and knows exactly how much she has to work with each month. She would be classed as "poor" - to you that is unfortunate. To me she is very fortunate because never has she had to worry about losing her home, whether she has a job next week etc. This is the same for a lot of people who choose to be less fortunate than others. Of course there are people out there who have NO choice but there are a hell of a lot more who do.

BrokenArm · 23/11/2009 14:01

Type of car IS RELEVANT.
4WD vehicles R much more deadly 2 pedestrians than ordinary cars. 4WD owners should take extra care accordingly.
-----
Bash at Type of school harder to justify -- though most privately educated kids do not live local to where they attend, so it may b very true to infer in some cases that their parents are less likely to give a hoot about local comunity around the private school.

smallorange · 23/11/2009 14:02

Oh fick's sake. Anyone read Charlie Brooker webchat? Tis very funy, will cheer you up..

smallorange · 23/11/2009 14:02

that wasn't aimed at anyone in particular - just cheered me up, that's all.
