calling little boys 'little men'

I just find it so, twee, irritating and unnecessary.

And why do mums only do it with their little boys ?

Why not called girls 'little ladies/ women'?

If I read one more facebook update..'is whatever-whatever with her little man' think I'll scream. Oedipal in reverse ??

just fits into the whole gender stereotyping of boys as hurly burly beings who so different and tougher than little girls they don't fit into child category.

AIBU ?

We call our ds little man, sausage, sweetie, baby boy,cutie-pie, plus lots of other equally sickly sweet names, sorry if that offends you...

actually no i am not sorry if it offends you.

JoeyBettany · 21/11/2009 17:51

I call dd 'little maid' all the time.

but i think middle aged women calling themselves girls is far worse.

Ditto to DoingthebestIcan.

DS is a Little Man. He will grow up to be a Man, and it's something he needs to be prepared for. He gets an enormous sense of pride about being a man.

Meantime, he is also my Big boy, my pumpkin, sweetypants, sausage, my little chicken, little one... He knows these are all terms of endearment, but he does know he is a man.

WidowWadman · 21/11/2009 17:58

I sometimes call babies "little human".

upahill · 21/11/2009 18:02

Well tbh I prefer 'little man' as a term of endearment than the one I heard coming out of work last week. Two young mums with a push chair each were walking past and one had a toddler who was dawdling some meters behind them. One of them shouts out 'Oi!! Dickhead - Hurry Up!'

scottishmummy · 21/11/2009 18:07

wee man/fella common colloquialisms as are big man/fella sont mind it tbh

paisleyleaf · 21/11/2009 18:19

Is it worse than 'young lady'? Seems a funny thing to be irritated by. I don't use it myself, but don't find it annoying.

DuelingFanjo · 21/11/2009 18:30

young man or young lady - perfectly fine

Little man and little lady - blergh!

AliGrylls · 21/11/2009 18:33

I call my ds gridlock because when he is around nothing happens.

Little man is fine but it just never occurred to me to call him that as he is actually really quite small.

WetAugust · 21/11/2009 18:50

YANBU Little Man / Lady is Ughhh!

So is 'Lad' for someone who is over 21 - I hate it

Chrysanthamum · 23/11/2009 14:05

I can't see why you would object to 'little man' with a name like'littlestmummystop' Although I don't mind either either.
