calling little boys 'little men'

I just find it so, twee, irritating and unnecessary.

And why do mums only do it with their little boys ?

Why not called girls 'little ladies/ women'?

If I read one more facebook update..'is whatever-whatever with her little man' think I'll scream. Oedipal in reverse ??

just fits into the whole gender stereotyping of boys as hurly burly beings who so different and tougher than little girls they don't fit into child category.

AIBU ?

Please inform me immediately of a list of 'necessary' nicknames for DCs and I will abide forthwith.

perfectstorm · 21/11/2009 16:27

I call my ds little man sometimes. I also call him sausagepie, chickpea, pudding and gorgeous. I'm sure it is twee, but tbh I don't give a monkey's arse. There are worse offences. Playboy tees for little girls and "here comes trouble!" ones for boys, for example.

hardly going to cause anyone any harm

Chrysanthamum · 21/11/2009 16:30

my ds refers to his dn[ephew]as The Boy [First name].I used to call same child[my dgs]my 'little love bun' (blush)until he told me aged 3 that he was now 'a big special boy' so I changed the pet name. Its all a bit twee when said on a forum like this but in the family context it is gentle and affectionate.

pranma · 21/11/2009 16:36

I also called my dd 'Girl Person'for years.

notnowbernard · 21/11/2009 16:37

I think you've got your knickers in a bit of a twist over this one

SouthMum · 21/11/2009 16:40

YABU and very clench-bum-holeish with the 'hurly burly' statement. You're reading WAY to much into it.

Faifly · 21/11/2009 16:41

hmm.. myself and DH call our man little man, the man, little pea/the pea (was his pregnancy title coz we didn't know boy or girl) and even PEApsus and PEApsicle. Rarely ever call him by name. Solely because he's just too small (6weeks) to be referred to in such a formal manner as a name. People always call kids names as a form of affection. Would i call my daughter little woman/lady (if i had a daughter that is)? Doubt it - simply because it doesn't roll on the tongue as much as little man does. Also little man fits nicely into all the silly little songs we make up for him, whereas little woman wouldn't - doesn't have that rhythmic patterns, as simple as that. No sexism at all.
My dad calls me lass, and always had nicknames for me which kept changing as i grew. Say at age ten or so i was cheesy bun. Just his way of being affectionate, thats all.

YABVVVU

Stay off Facebook if it irks you that much

notnowbernard · 21/11/2009 16:46

I have dds but call them a variety of "gender sterotyping" names

Missy, Darling, Lovely, Lady (I LOVE this when using stern telling-off voice: "Now, look here, Lady!" in style of Janice from Corrie)

Thing is, I am a Southener

I say it in a piss-takey way, too (you know, ham the accent up a bit)

If I have a ds, maybe I'll refer to him as the "little Geezer"

IrritatedMe · 21/11/2009 17:05

Surely as long as someone isn't calling their or your child 'FanjoFace' it shouldn't be even given more than a nano second of a thought.

Then again, I will routinely call my two Little Fanjoface lady and Little Fanjoface Man, hopefully just to rile folk.

OrmIrian · 21/11/2009 17:08

I do that. Never occurred to me it was Oedipal

scottishmummy · 21/11/2009 17:23

it isnt oedipal in the least, ole man freud did talk a lot of chuff

Oedipal is the unconscious desire located in the child to eliminate the same parent and compete for maternal affection

nor is it Oedipal in reverse

scottishmummy · 21/11/2009 17:25

Oedipal is the unconscious desire located in the child to eliminate the same sex parent and compete for maternal affection

MollieO · 21/11/2009 17:27

In the area I live, 'my man' and 'my woman' are common endearments for children, it took a bit of getting used to when we first came here, but I quite like it now. 'Tis only folk trying to be nice

2shoes · 21/11/2009 17:35

oh I love some of the anmes on here they are so sweet.

can I start a thread about a thread just to people can pots the cute names?

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 21/11/2009 17:36

"oedipal'???????
Are you suggesting that I am sexualising my baby son by calling him a term of endearment?

PoppyIsApain · 21/11/2009 17:39
