we can afford it but is it a bit of a waste in you opinion?

it feeds 10-12 and we have 5, so there would be plenty left over, which i would use in risottots and pies and a noodle dish

anyone know if the skin the inside birds on this things?

heres the one im thinking of ordering

if you can afford if and will it eat it all, either in one sitting or by using up the leftovers then it prob isn't a waste, is it ?

porcamiseria · 17/11/2009 13:26

but if it makes you happy, go for it

Well it's up to you of course but I could think of lots of things I'd rather spend £90 on!

sprouting · 17/11/2009 13:29

You could get this onefor £40 but its turkey instead of goose and its smaller. If its going to provide 5 people with about 5 meals each then its not too bad though.

well a cheaper alterative, would be a nice organic corn fed chicken, and four duck legs.
dd can just have a bit of our duck legs
i could do the chicken in the middle and the legs in the corners on the dish iyswim.

If you can afford it, you get to decide what to indulge yourself in, and as porca says, it's christmas!

Sounds like a great idea to me.

Tidey · 17/11/2009 13:30

My DSis and BIL made one a couple of years ago, and personally I thought it was revolting. The idea itself seemed pretty horrible, but then it tasted rank too. I think it was chicken, duck and partridge or something, but I could be wrong.

But if you've had it before, like it and can use it all up, why not?

alwayslookingforanswers · 17/11/2009 13:30

Well a goose is usually around £10kg, the Ocado 5.8kg one is £58. and I guess as the weight of the 3 bird one is only 4.5kg I guess it's a smaller goose.

missorinoco · 17/11/2009 13:31

Just read your last post. The second option lacks the feel good factor to me. The first feels deliciously indulgent.

is that heals farm one frozen?

OP posts:
Lizzylou · 17/11/2009 13:33

We had one a few years back, can't remember about the skin on the inside birds, sorry.
We were eating it forever, but the meat froze well.
I think ours cost about £60.
Was nice to try but wouldn't bother again. More a novelty thing (though not a novelty when it's the 28th December and you're still not half way through).

sprouting · 17/11/2009 13:34

Don't think so. I've had a few from there and they have been fresh but I have frozen them at home as I am too hysterical to wait for a Christmas Eve delivery.

Jackstini · 17/11/2009 13:34

Aldi usually do a small one (turkey/chicken/duck) for 9.99 so you could have a couple of those.
If it is a large fresh one you want tis a tenner cheaper here if it makes you feel better!www.whitegate-farm-shop.co.uk/p/Whitegate_Farm_Large_Three_Bird_Roast_5kg/2a4eba91cf92410ca17d797a22 2dbfbd/f5119c345b8042d79991a85e8a98dbdb/

alwayslookingforanswers · 17/11/2009 13:35

carrie - I don't think it's frozen - in the FAQ there's a question "Will Hall Farm products freeze" - and they say they can be - so I'm guessing it's fresh

carriedababi · 17/11/2009 13:46

thanks for the link

I always tend to the "if you can afford it, go for it" option since I particularly detest the sort of chippy reverse snobbery that pours scorn on a spot of luxury tucker. Also, £90 for something that serves 10 to 12 people comes out at a very reasonable cost per portion. I happily spend well over £60 on an organic free-range Christmas turkey to feed 4 of us with cold bits on Boxing Day.

But I'm vaguely, and inexplicably, unsettled by these three-bird combos. I don't really believe they are what they say and expect them to emerge from inside a swan, be stuffed with lark-tongue pate and served with a thrush egg mousse.

So personally, I'd go for your second option of a "nice organic corn fed chicken, and four duck legs".

alwayslookingforanswers · 17/11/2009 14:26

oh Jackstini thanks for that link - I've been looking for the cheapest place to source a goose for Christmas this year - and that's the cheapest I've seen

diddl · 17/11/2009 14:29

I think the one linked by Sprouting looks much nicer.

But to the OP-if you can afford it, will enjoy it & use it-why not?

alwayslookingforanswers · 17/11/2009 14:31

the one sprouting linked to is cheaper because there's less bird. Its only 1.75kg (so same size as a large chicken) as opposed to 4.5kg on the Ocado one.

ComeOveneer · 17/11/2009 14:37

I have ordered this one this year 5 bird roast. However I got it for a special offer price of £70 and free delivery. It comes fresh and can therefore be frozen. When you consider you are paying for something that is 100% edible, no waste, ready prepared, easy to carve, I think it is well worth the money.

alwayslookingforanswers · 17/11/2009 14:40

cor get a load of this one

25kg

BitOfFun · 17/11/2009 14:43

I know someone who had the Aldi one last week- apparently it was delicious. I'd get two to feed more, I suppose.
