carriedababi · 17/11/2009 13:19

we can afford it but is it a bit of a waste in you opinion?

it feeds 10-12 and we have 5, so there would be plenty left over, which i would use in risottots and pies and a noodle dish

anyone know if the skin the inside birds on this things?

heres the one im thinking of ordering

Well if you will use it of course it isn't.

We spend about 60 on a lovely delicious free-range bird from local butcher for Xmas at about the same weight.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/11/2009 19:49

posie I think that's a bit much when you have NO idea what I or my family do or don't do in respect of world poverty and hungry children.

I also believe that it is extremely important to support good quality, British food producers. The desire for cheap food and the mass production of it is one of the things that is doing the worst damage to our planet - pesticides, deforestation, farmers in the developing world being paid a pittance for their produce.
Surely it is far better to pay a fair price for good quality food?

frazzled74 · 17/11/2009 19:54

its not scandalous, its extravagent, and if you have the money go for it.Unfortunately there are always going to be people who are having a bad time at christmas and there will always be poverty. We should all be aware of that and help in some way but at the other extreme, there are people out there who will be spending far far more than £90 on christmas dinner for 5.

pigletmania · 17/11/2009 19:56

YABU thats waaaaaaaaay too much, 3 £4 chickens would do me.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 17/11/2009 20:00

3 £4 chickens would almost certainly be battery-reared in apalling conditions

carriedababi · 17/11/2009 20:08

you could easily spend 50quid per head if you went out.

and when did not having the internet, equal poverty!

OP posts:
imnotaceleb · 17/11/2009 20:14

Go for it. If you can afford it why not.

AvadaKedavra · 17/11/2009 20:26

Aye right, pull the other one love, it's got a turkducken up it

Greensleeves · 17/11/2009 20:29

£90?? What is it, a farkin ostrich?

redllamayellowllama · 17/11/2009 20:29

In our household, we always celebrate the foodie aspect of Christmas over everything else. A couple of years ago a big fuss was made over getting a goose from Borough Market and it turned into a whole adventure. We mark the run-up to Christmas with different recipes and treats and we spend far too much money on luxury food items at this time of year. We do have some lovely food-based traditions that I'm already excited about. Far better to do that than spend a fortune on presents IMO.

So YANBU at all, but I have concerns over this three-bird roast. I'm not sure I trust it.

ClaireDeLoon · 17/11/2009 20:30

Do they taste nice? It's not the money that's me ponder these it's the taste. Like others have said a decent turkey or goose is approaching this much money so I don't think you'd be doing the wrong thing, I just wonder if the mix of meats would be nice.

I do love my turkey at Christmas though - sometimes we ring the changes with a rib of beef or a goose but I really like traditional turkey (yes I know goose is more traditional).

Oblomov · 17/11/2009 20:43

My sil had the M&S 3 bird one. Or was it the 5 bird one. But she said it was divine.

ThatVikRinA22 · 17/11/2009 20:47

dunno why but the idea of lots of birds all sewn into one feels a bit 'frankenstein'! is it nice? am intrigued.

Greensleeves · 17/11/2009 20:52

reminds me of Henry VIII's cooks creating "mythical beasts" by stitching together different bits of animals and plonking it in the middle of the table

smacks of Ancient Rome-style gluttony for the sake of it/exhibitionist decadence to me

it'll end badly, you mark my words

NeedaNewName · 17/11/2009 20:55

Yum!!!!! As long as you would eat it all and you can afford it don't see the problem.

FrameyMcFrame · 17/11/2009 21:11

Actually you can get free range chickens from our local butchers that are reared locally for £5 each.

I would say that a concoction of birds stuffed into other birds is a bit yuck really. Reminds me of 'Turkey Crown' from Morrisons, cheap and gimicky. Keep it simple, get a good organic, local, free range bird. Much classier.

bibbitybobbityhat · 17/11/2009 21:21

Another vote for it seems horribly unnatural and a bit like something from some painfully pretentious upper class twits gluttony club. Sorry.

Rollmops · 18/11/2009 06:55

One has never been impressed with turkey and Mr. Rollmops considers it to be the most tasteless thing on the planet so the three bird wrap doesn't appeal the slightest.
Now goose or a duck for the outer layer would be delish....
Oh, and lose the chicken, pheasant or partridge is so much more tasty.
[drool][heads off to get her toast and marmite...]

moondog · 18/11/2009 07:01

Sounds great.I'd have one-had i not already ordered my goose from my friend's farm.

(It dines on organic corn and has its own llittle divan in a well ventilated barn.)

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 18/11/2009 07:10

This is a little bit of an odd question and I don't really understand why you have posted it. If you can afford it without having to sell your youngest child then of course YANBU, it's your money you can spend it how you wish.

Rollmops · 18/11/2009 07:24

..eerm... wrong link. Yours is with goose,[yummm], I suppose the chicken would be OK.
Oopsie.
Go for it!

nighbynight · 18/11/2009 07:31

Hmm, my first reaction was Disgusting, it sounds like something out of a Hogarth drawing of eighteenth century gluttony.

But on teh other hand, it is probably a realistic price for the amount of meat you are buying. We are just so used to cheap food, and eating cheap meat every day, that we have lost touch with what it ought to cost.
Don't think I could bring myself to buy so much meat, though. I will buy less, and it will do for more than 12 portions.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/11/2009 07:48

MORLOTH - Christmas delivery - there are slots on the 20th and 21st, one left on the 22nd.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/11/2009 07:49

Of course, that's handy if you happen to live near to me

Morloth · 18/11/2009 08:20

Thanks Dragon, not open here yet. I don't think I will pay the membership thing, I only get a delivery every couple of months for heavy/cleaning stuff so it isn't worth the 10 quid.

Will just keep an eye out and take my chances, worst case is a trip to the shops that weekend, eep!
