to not want my nanny to eat a whole box of chocolates in my fridge?

I have had a box of Guylian chocolates (not that it's particularly relevant) in my fridge for a couple of weeks, and my brother was here yesterday, so went to open the box - to find that all bar 8 of them had been eaten. I immediately accused my husband, as he is known to be a bit of a secret treat eater, but he absolutely swears blind that he only had 2.

She's also finished two enormous bags of crisps this week and most of a packet of biscuits. I don't begrudge feeding her breakfast and lunch as her contract states, but is it unreasonable of me to expect her NOT to eat my 'treats'?!

How did she manage to fit in the fridge?

Rantagonist · 13/11/2009 14:33

lmao @ Wilf

FabIsJustSoBusy · 13/11/2009 14:33

YANBU but have you said when you have things that are just for you?

PanicMode · 13/11/2009 14:36

LOL Wilf - should have phrased that better!!

FIJSB - I usually do if it's something like, please use x not y as that's for our supper - but I didn't really expect her to make inroads into things that are obviously not subsistence items!!

Could your husband be underestimating how many he has eaten? When I have been a glutton I fib about how many chocolates I have scoffed and usually blame it on ds, if I had a nanny it would be her fault.

PanicMode · 13/11/2009 14:45

no, I know it's not him this time (although he does sometimes fib, he then comes clean) but he told me that he felt SO guilty that he'd had two and not told me, so didn't eat any more (when usually he could happily eat a whole box in one sitting!)

He's getting a bit fed up with the amount of food that she's eating actually, so I know that this is a genuine case of him telling the truth!

I am in awe that you can have a box of chocolates in your house for more than an hour. I seem to inhale the lot as soon as the box is opened.

have you said that these things are just for you though?

diddl · 13/11/2009 14:50

What hour does she work?

Have you told her she´s not allowed to eat your food?

fillybuster · 13/11/2009 14:50

Obviously YANBU, and your nanny clearly knew she was being naughty or she wouldn't have left an empty box in your fridge.

You can either:

  1. Say nothing, but give her an empty box of chocolates at xmas (obv along with some 'real' presents)...that should make your point clearly
  1. Sit her down, have a proper chat, make it clear that you don't expect to have to label food in your own house and that if something is a 'treat' (crisps, chocolates, biscuits) etc then you expect her to leave them well alone even if they are already open. No reason she can't bring her own to keep at your house if she urgently requires snacks during the day.

My nanny regularly stashes chocolate, cake etc in our fridge for 'emergency snack times'...she'd be ok with us nicking hers but only because we would replace it the very next morning. That way no-one gets cross.

IrritatedMe · 13/11/2009 14:53

I wouldn't mention it. But I would buy a job lot of chocolate digestives and cheapo crisps and tell her these are for her to snack on.

AnnaSui · 13/11/2009 14:54

She did you a favour. They're vile. Really greasy and tasteless.

Now if they'd been Lir or Leonidas, I'd be pissed off alright.

Rhubarb · 13/11/2009 14:55

Sorry, I shouldn't laugh I really shouldn't, but I'm pissing myself here!

Sorry, I'll get me coat!

LOL!

AnnaSui · 13/11/2009 14:56

Reading this back I am laughing. I think you need urgent couple's counselling, never mind the nanny. Your husband was wracked with guilt because he took two chocolates from his fridge.

I think I would take out the box of chocs and put a little valium into each empty space and then put the box back in there for you to find nyum. lovely valium.

belgo · 13/11/2009 14:58

How may chocolates in the box? 24 I think if they are the sea shells?

Eight left, your dh ate two, so she ate 14 over the two weeks that they were in your fridge?

One a day on average?

I admire her self restraint. I'd have scoffed the lot within two days.

Rhubarb · 13/11/2009 14:59

LOLOLOLOLOL!

AnnaSui · 13/11/2009 14:59

Good point belgo. It's unnatural to leave chocolates in the fridge for weeks and then expect everybody else to resist them.

Resisting chocolate is not a natural human instinct.

lolapoppins · 13/11/2009 15:09

Our dog used to keep nicking ds sandwiches off the table. One day, we filled some with mustard and tobasco and she has never nicked another bit of food since.

Maybe you could try that?

wickedwitchofwaterloo · 13/11/2009 15:09

"He's getting a bit fed up with the amount of food that she's eating actually"

if an employer even said this about me, I'd be mortified!!

bolebo · 13/11/2009 15:13

oh cripes - is blackadder on this thread?

buy cheapo biscuits and crisps for her - after all she is only a commoner

do you really mind the person who looks after your children eating a few chocs

the only thing i'd worry about is her health

letsblowthistacostand · 13/11/2009 15:28

Can't believe it took you 2 weeks to notice so am going to say YABU because you clearly don't care about the actual chocolate.

beingabitchispartofmymystique · 13/11/2009 15:56

I feel sorry for her. How can you make such a big deal out of a box of chocs? and why should she eat CHEAPO crisps and biscuits? She's a human after all, just like you and your dh. I love my chocs but would never begrudge someone else eating them. Buy some more instead!

porcamiseria · 13/11/2009 16:00

YABU!!!! Are these choc so important thats you'd risk humiliating the person that looks after your kids!!!! she is clearly one hungry nanny

as for the comment from filly

  1. Say nothing, but give her an empty box of chocolates at xmas (obv along with some 'real' presents)...that should make your point clearly

I am VERY glad I am not your Nanny...

Maria2007loveshersleep · 13/11/2009 16:06

I'm sorry but this thread is ridiculous OP! First of all, I seriously wouldn't even give it a second thought if this sort of thing were to happen (you must have plenty of time to worry yourself about such things, plus posting on MN about them!) Second, I certainly agree with being and porcamiseria: this person is looking after your kids! She's a very important person in your life. I agree that it would be extremely humiliating & just wrong in every way to talk to her about it. So what if she had a greedy moment (after all we all do, all the time, I certainly wouldn't let a box of chocolates sit in the fridge that long!!)

This thread would actually be very sad tbh if it weren't so hilarious.

Maria2007loveshersleep · 13/11/2009 16:06

(YABVVVVVVVU if that didn't come through clearly enough).

MrsSeanBean · 13/11/2009 16:16

Oh goody, this has just reminded me I have a box of M&S Operetta (not that the brand is relevant) in my fridge and I think I'll go and have a couple right now! Yum Yum.
