You must iron some things, like shirts and uniforms?

go on admit it

My ex-neighbour not only ironed her pants and socks but also hand towels and flannels so that they "looked neat in the bathroom drawer"

She was a rich housewife with no children

Our iron is rarely used. dh used to enjoy ironing, and then he discovered other pleasures in life I learned to iron, and can do it quite well, but find that being slightly scruffy hasn't caused me any great harm. I don't spend ours doing my hair, or wear make up, so really have lots of time to do what I like to do (apart from the 40 hrs at work, obviously).

I do have some clothes that need ironing, but buy them rarely because they just don't get worn. I find that there are plenty of elegant and work worthy clothes that not only don't need to be ironed, but positively must not be ironed.

Bambinoloveseggbirds · 14/11/2009 07:28

I have been ironing since I was taught by my mother - at 11 - so she didn't have to, and I ironed from then for the whole family. Thanks for that Mum. I didn't particularly like doing and just saw it as another chore until I recently worked out that if I stick the radio on, it's actually quite relaxing and gives me a break from looking after DS.

DH never irons and looks like a sack of shite half the time, but it is part of his charm and he can get away with it at work ( in IT). I have to look smart for my job. I don't have to wear suits, but my boss would give me a if I turned up in creased clothes.

Crazycatlady · 14/11/2009 09:44

Tee hee this is still going!

Knew I'd get you on here boobz. But you see I know you're married to a secret ironer... he positively covets my steam generator...

Yes I do iron grobags. But only the 1 togs, the 2.5s (which go in the dryer) seem to come out looking great and ironing would just flatten they're fluffy cosiness. Why should DD have crumpled bed linen?

G does his work shirts, I iron all the rest of his stuff otherwise he would never bother and it would sit cluttering up the laundry room for months.

Crazycatlady · 14/11/2009 09:46

THEIR not they're can you tell the neighbours kept me up to 6am?

"This is just A Get Out Of Jail Card for people who can't be arsed to look presentable, and also allows them to assume some sort of smug moral superiority at the same time. Bonus."

Oh what a load of bollocks nonsense.

Get over yourselves.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2009 10:22

There's no farking way I want to spend "an hour and a week" ironing.

DH needs to iron his unifomr - RAF, so on a sunday night he does his uniform, polo shirts for boys and schoolt rouers. if there's t-sshirts etc then he'll do them. I don't iron underwear, towels, bedding, the DSes live mainly in tracksuit bottoms which don't need done. My work trousers and top come out the dryer not needing irnoned.
MIl does everything - pants, socks, dusters, tea towels, bath towels etc

Kaloki · 14/11/2009 11:51

I know I look presentable despite not ironing, I get a lot of comments on how smart I look. So I don't buy into this whole you must iron or you will look like you've gone through a hedge backwards.

Honestly, do people go round counting how many creases are on clothes? I find that creases drop out of clothes on the washing line, and any creases that then end up on my clothes are a by product of actually wearing them.

Janos · 14/11/2009 12:35

Unrepentant scruff here.

Well, I do iron occasionally (eg for a job interview) just not very often. Def not sheets, pants or socks.

If you like to do it cos you think it makes you look smarter, or even don't like to but do it anyway cos you think you should, great. If you don't cos you can't be arsed and/or don't feel the need that's fine too!

Life is way too short to care (seriously - not entirely sure the OP is )about this sort of thing. The day I give a tuppenny ha'penny shite about whether or not someone else has ironed their clothes is the day I give up on life, really.

notcitrus · 14/11/2009 12:53

I haven't ironed in the last 4 years; MrNC has about 3 times. I use the tumble drier about twice a year.

My work is smart casual mostly so nice trousers and a stretchy top. When I need to be smart I wear a suit which is drycleaned as need be and again a stretchy or draping top - I can't do buttons so no point in shirts. I look as smart as anyone else after a crowded commute. MrNC wears unironed shirts to work as after he's cycled in they'll be wrinkled anyway.

I would rather like to have ironed sheets and duvet covers but it never makes it into my top 20 things to do... I do fold pants and teatowels and put socks together, though.
If I were better at ironing I might do it more, but it takes me at least 15 minutes to do a shirt and then I drop it and have to do it again... sod that!

Judy1234 · 14/11/2009 13:34

I've been a mother for 25 years and never ironed. The children seem to have survived and their school shirts don't seem to need ironing and I don't wear shirts. We do have an iron and if anyone puts something that might need ironing in the wash then it may get ironed by the cleaner I really don't think you need ironing. Read Matthew Parris in today's Times aged 60 talking about notes to his 16 year old self. One is you do not need to iron. He is right. Look at all the extra fun times I have had with my children or even doing exciting work and earning a lot of money because I don't iron and I think I look pretty good rather than crumpled. You just have to ensure you buy clothes that don't need ironing and of course don't get fat. Being fat is the one thing that tends to make people look awful, never mind the ironing.

Yes ironing is never going to disguise flab...

But I don't find that one hour a week is much to dedicate to ironing, really, and doesn't preclude anyone from having fun times with their family and friends, doing rewarding work, exercising, having a decent sex life, MNing or whatever it is you might choose to do.

If you really don't like ironing, don't want to pay someone else to do it and don't mind looking crumpled (because you do ) then fair enough!

Kaloki · 14/11/2009 13:49

"i happen to think that being vile and sneering makes people look much worse than being fat, but hey ho"

quoted for truth

TrillianAstra · 14/11/2009 13:55

You are onto a corker here. People getting judgey and defensive in equal measure in both directions.

Claire236 · 14/11/2009 13:59

We hardly ever iron anything & don't look scruffy a fact which seems to really annoy my mum who desperately wants me to iron everything like she does but has to admit that we never look wrinkled. Clothes out of the washing machine & either hung straight up to dry or straight in the drier then straight out of the drier & put away. Very few things end up creased. Of course if you have an ironing pile like some people I know then clothes will obviously need ironing when they come out of it.

Judy1234 · 14/11/2009 14:55

100 years of ironing isn't going to make fat people look good but I was certainly not directing my comments at anyone on the thread. I assume they are all normal weights on-line.

I can't see the piont in buying clothes you need to iron. Life is too short to stuff a mushroom. I suspect ironing is one of the many pointless tasks women take on which keeps them earning under £100k a year and if they just spent those 90 minutes a week developing their business plan they would have a lot more fun or it is like washing the feet of Jesus or the church floor - a subservience which is good fo the soul, all these mundane tasks some women do at home to emphasise their subservient status to their children and their man?

i never ever iron a thing. i dont think i ever look scrufffy. i never buy anything that 'needs' ironing. dh irons his own shirts for work as and when he needs them. life is too short. fold it properly when it comes off line or out of dryer and itsnot necessary

bubblagirl · 14/11/2009 15:36

i hang everything up that would need ironing when its drying and all dry fine folded nicely never needs ironing we iron going out creased clothes as and when needed most of the time we dont iron at all i never iron a thing and we never look creased or horrid in fact were always complimented on how smart we always manage to look i dont leave things lying around it's hung up dries gets put away straight away nicely
