to think that the 'art director' of this well known chain of hairdressers is a twunt?

we are very low on funds at the moment - job finished next week so no money for luxuries at the moment. So when I saw a notice in the window of this hairdressers saying guinea pigs wanted for training stylists to practice cuts/colours/highlights on I thought I'd go in and volunteer. Woman on reception says 'ooh yes you have long hair you would be perfect, are you willing to be adventurous?" I reply that yes I would and prior to small people making an appearance I was quite with it as it were . She trots of to get the self appointed fart director who comes down stairs looks me up and down and says am I aware that this salon is at the cutting edge of fashion and styling and maybe I should try elsewhere Am I unreasonable to feel a bit embarrassed and humilitated and wanting to shove a pair of 'cutting edge' scissors sideways??

What is worse is that this chain have cut and coloured my hair for nearly 12 years now, they've just lost my custom

Update - have had something of an 'inadvertent' response! Whoops!

Hi Brenda,

The link to the reviews below, I responded to a client earlier thinking she was genuine, but they are all telling each other to email us and show our response on the site, what should I do?

Thanks

Love it. I can just see them, with their edgy haircuts natch, reading this thread and thinking us all terribly uncool

PercyPigPie · 06/11/2009 14:29

I too went there soon after having a baby, feeling tired, hormonal and in need of a treat. They did their sniffy thing with me too. I felt so low when I left but wrote a very stroppy letter to head office. They sent me a free voucher which I took great pleasure in tearing up, and telling them I was doing so.

I wouldn't mind, but they're hairdressers for goodness sake - not not brain surgeons or something even part way worthwhile. Where do they get that sense of self importance from I want to know?

Marioandluigi · 06/11/2009 14:31

ROFL - Hahaha

PercyPigPie · 06/11/2009 14:32

They seem to be as incompetent with a keyboard as they are with their scissors, judging from their inadvertent response above!

Pinkjenny · 06/11/2009 14:34

That is BRILLIANT!

Toni & Guy are absolute shite, they really are.

TheBolter · 06/11/2009 14:38

Oh I had my hair done once at T&G. THe stylist was really rude and her fingers, (which were right next to my face as she was doing some layering stuff at cheek level) absolutely stank of fags.

T & G had their heyday, and now they are resting complacently on their laurels thinking that their brand image will feed their success. It won't... there are hundreds of really great independent hairdressers out there who charge half the price and offer ten times better service...not to mention end results.

MorrisZapp · 06/11/2009 14:39

Heard nothing but bad things about T&G. Never been there myself but I have been to a supposedly trendy chain here in Edinburgh (Cheynes) where I had the absolute worst service I've ever had from any hairdresser in my life.

To be fair, my cut and colour were fine but they treated me like a sack of spuds who couldn't see or hear. Also, they cram you in so that you can literally touch the people getting done either side of you. And... I've never seen such a dirty salon - dye on the walls, unswept floor, stained towels etc.

And this is supposed to be 'premium' quality hairdressing.

I go to a fantastic local hairdressers now, have done for years, it's still not cheap but at least is very good value and service.

These stuck up salons are just full of hand flapping arseholes who think that it's all about them.

neolara · 06/11/2009 14:43

I have been going to T & G for a few years now. One of the stylists who cut my hair was the best hairdresser I have ever used. She was consistently excellent but unfortunately she left to have a baby. The stylist who I used after her was also good. However, she also left to have a baby. Last time I went I had a terrible haircut. Someone obviously spotted I was not pleased and rang me up a few days later to ask if I was happy with my cut. When I said I wasn't, they made another appointment for me to go back in and see if they could do something with it. I thought that was pretty good customer service.

cissycharlton · 06/11/2009 14:46

I went to tony and guy. The woman who cut my hair didn't stop looking at herself in the mirror. She asked me three times which side I wore my parting and then parted it on the wrong side. I gave up, paid and vowed never to return.

MrsMuddle · 06/11/2009 14:51

Has the OP confirmed it was T&G? I made a guess at T&G at the start of the thread - now I feel awful in case it wasn't!

MorrisZapp · 06/11/2009 14:53

These chain places are staffed by children, and they earn pocket money. It's the hairdressing equivalent of child labour, if the children were over made-up and wearing ludicrous 'fashion'.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 06/11/2009 14:53

The feeling I had was very much that it was a "production line", with everything rushed. The stylist told me they were not allowed to take breaks. I know hairdressing is a tough career, but no breaks !?

mudandmayhem ahem. I have to take issue with what you say. No, hairdressing is not brain surgery, but it is a skilled profession and a good one is worth their weight in gold. In a lot of those makeover shows, it's the hair that makes the difference

PercyPigPie · 06/11/2009 14:58

Mrsmuddle see her post at 7.27pm last night ;-) that pretty much confirms it I think!

Brain surgery ......

MorrisZapp · 06/11/2009 15:00

I read an article in which the boss of Cheynes said that she does not provide staff rooms becuase 'if the stylists have spare time they should spend it with the clients'.

ie, she is totally exploiting young people and their desire to work in a creative/ fashion industry.

MrsMuddle · 06/11/2009 15:01

Phew, Mudandmayhem! Didn't notice that. I don't feel bad any more.

PercyPigPie · 06/11/2009 15:01

It may be a skilled 'profession', but my point was that I don't think it is such a skilled profession as to warrant the attitude and arrogance often shown.

displayuntilbestbefore · 06/11/2009 15:03

YANBU, that is outrageous. I also used to go to Toni and Guy but got sick of staring at the bare belly button of my crop topped stylist while she cut my hair and chatted to her colleagues about inane rubbish. I pay a lot less now to go to another high profile salon and my stylist couldn't be more professional or friendly which goes to show how up their own a###s T&G are. Definitely write to head office - it's poor PR for their company.

PercyPigPie · 06/11/2009 15:04

And ... anyone who worked in a role that is traditionally described as 'professional' would be slaughtered by showing that level of client service.

TheBolter · 06/11/2009 15:09

Has anyone apart from Neolara actually stepped forward and contradicted our seemingly unanimous verdict on T&G? We that are all agreeing on something!

mumblechum · 06/11/2009 15:12

Have just skimmed thread.

Just cancelled tomorrow's appt with T&G (almost £50 for cut & blow) & booked one round the corner for £28.

I didn't realise they were so much more expensive than independent salons!

(Mainly cancelled because I don't like the person who cut it last time and think it's the same one tomorrow)

Restrainedrabbit · 06/11/2009 15:19

Just had this from T&GHQ:

Dear Hazel,

Thank you for your email.

I was sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience when visiting TONI&GUY and would like to sincerely apologise for your disappointment.

Please be assured that all TONI&GUY staff are trained to the very high standards which Toni&Guy clients have come to expect in all our salons all of the time. We cannot however, control all reviews which are posted on the net but would like to thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. Any complaint which comes through TONI&GUY is logged through both the salon and head office and dealt with ensuring that client satisfaction is our number one priority.

Therefore I would like the opportunity to investigate this for you and would be grateful if you would let me know which salon you visited and the date and I will then contact you with the outcome.

Kind Regards

Katie Byrne
