Or has anyone got thiers up already?

Coming back from school today i happened to notice someone near me has thier tree up, i could see it through the window.

It seems to be getting earlier and earlier each year at this house.

If any of you have started with christmas decorations by now, I would be interested to know what reason you have for doing so [nosy emoticon]

As i myself would be absolutely sick of the thing by christmas day never mind into new year. Beginning of December is early enough for me if i can be bothered, But do aim to have it up by the 25th

I'm the youngest of six, and the last 3 of us have December birthdays. Mine is the last on the 17th, so traditionally when I was a child the tree went up on the 18th. We tend to put it up in our house now in the second week of December, and take it down for Twelfth Night on January 6th. It's quite dry and crunchy by then.

It's not really "Christmas" in our house unless you can smell the real pine needles, the spices in the gingerbread cookies, and the oranges and spices in the mulled wine... I think scents in general are overlooked in our culture but are some of our strongest memories from childhood.

Divatheshopaholic · 06/11/2009 15:51

Will be up 2 weeks before xmas, and will be down after 9days or is it 10, dh got some superstition

Zanynut · 06/11/2009 17:36

Mine will be up in the next 2 weeks (was hoping it would be up this weekend gone) but it didn't work out.

I put mine up early as it helps the kids decide for certain what they would like from santa and to get into the mood of christmas carols and the school christmas concerts.

I'm in a wheelchair so i have to do it around when hubby is home to lend a hand which at this time isn't that often.

I think it's such a personal issue, hope you all have a good christmas whenever you decide to decorate your tree.

piscesmoon · 06/11/2009 22:19

Mine would be bald by Christmas if it went up now! It will still be growing until at least the 18th Dec.

bettykitten75 · 06/11/2009 22:29

As the mother of two kids aged 3 and 15 months there is no frigging way the tree will EVER EVER go up before the 2nd weekend in December.

NKffffffffee0f8010X1140828dc0e · 06/11/2009 23:05

Nietinv... I never had a word to say on 'what christmas is about'. Is it really such 'dangerous territory' on here to point out that there are 12 days of Christmas?

JesusChristOtterStar · 07/11/2009 00:30

i saw one in peter jones and vowed not to shop there

ours goes up weekend before christmas usually around 21st

it's hard keeping a lid on dcs excitement when shops are adorned from the 30th october

piscesmoon · 07/11/2009 08:42

You won't have many places to shop -PeterJones are not alone!

springlamb · 07/11/2009 08:55

I usually go by the dcs' school activities - once they are doing Xmassy things our tree goes up. I like them coming home from the Nativity/school Xmas dinner to their own Xmassy house.
But this year ds's school production is on 2/3/4 Dec and I am thinking it's a tad early.
DS(15 yesterday) is our grouch this year - keeps complaining that all the shops have their stock out far too early. He was not impressed when he found his two aunties (cumulative age 98) practicing Xmas songs on the karaoke machine last night in preparation for our family Xmas dinner on 20 Dec.

piscesmoon · 07/11/2009 09:12

Schools have to start early to fit it all in-at home you have the luxury of time! I do the opposite and start when they finish-otherwise Christmas is a bit of an anti climax.

springlamb · 07/11/2009 09:36

But if I didn't put the tree up while they were still at school where would I put all those quality handmade hanging angels they make at school...
Anyhoo, this thread has made me consult the oracle (calendar) and Sunday 6th is the day.

Slight 'is it worth it anyway' emoticon this year - we are off to the Caribbean at 9.15 on Boxing Day and not back till 12th night (not our usual thing, DH's first holiday in some years, thanks to Xmas/NY shutdown).

piscesmoon · 07/11/2009 09:51

If you are going away then you have a good excuse! I can't stand it when people are at home and just take it down on Boxing Day because they are fed up with it and go off to the sales-Christmas over!! I put mine up late (angels etc can still go on) and I refuse to go shopping on Boxing Day-it stays up until 12th night.

NKffffffffee0f8010X1140828dc0e · 07/11/2009 11:06

I am all in favour of refusing to go to sales at 5am on boxing day. It is still christmas - furniture shops and the like shouldn't even be open. Everyone should be sat on the sofa eating chocolates and watching TV. - now i'm getting into what christmas is about territory...

Pinkmarshmallow · 07/11/2009 11:25

Haven't read the whole thread yet but every year, as soon as hallowe'en is over, our neighbours have their decorations up. A christmas tree is not visible from outside, I presume there is one in there somewhere, but there are xmas lights on, santas and wreaths everywhere, fake snow on all the windows.... so OTT and fussy and ugly looking IMO.

Zazacat · 07/11/2009 18:27

1st of December because my dh loves to! Has become afamily tradition. Doesn't stay up long after Christmas though.

womma · 07/11/2009 20:43

It's silly to boycott a shop because they have a christmas tree up in November

CaliforniaDreams · 07/11/2009 23:32

The stuff's been in the shops for some time now and sort of getting used to it, but fortunately haven't yet seen any of those weird upside down trees that John Lewis had last year (or was it the year before?) - wth was all that about?

cheesesarnie · 07/11/2009 23:34

ours goes up on 20th/21st as ds2 birthday is 19th so he has that first.only christmasy thing up till then is advent calenders.

JesusChristOtterStar · 08/11/2009 21:00

is it womma

it is bloody annoying having to constantly tell a 6 and 3 year old not to go beserk because the festival we are all going to celebrate is infact not for another two months

hype hype hype

JesusChristOtterStar · 08/11/2009 21:13

infact just looked ours up at a level

comp 851 points
private 928 points
state grammar 1106point

discrepancy between comp and private at gcse was 76% A-C compared to 97% private

once less academic crowd has left - picture very different

JesusChristOtterStar · 08/11/2009 21:14

whoooooops wrong thread

always wondered how people manage that!

Poledra · 08/11/2009 21:31

I'm one of those December birthday people, so our tree never goes up till after my (18th Dec) birthday, as that was what my mum did when I was little. And DH doesn't mind, as we both would hate it getting in the way for much more than that. As DD1's school breaks up on my birthday this year, I'm guessing we'll be decorating Sunday 20th. We do sometimes buy it earlier (real tree) but leave it in the garage till then.

When I was small, the man next door worked for the Forestry Commission, and he used to get our tree for us. He'd get home from work early, and lob it over the garden wall. For years my dad had us believing that Santa's elves popped round early with our tree for us......

womma · 08/11/2009 21:44

Of course it is otterstar, don't be a berk

JesusChristOtterStar · 08/11/2009 21:46

why do you care womma - do you own a shop

NKffffffffee0f8010X1140828dc0e · 09/11/2009 10:58

I just got home form a day out shopping (having left dh and ds at home for the day) to find flashing lights up in our living room window. I told dh, it's embarrassing, get them down but my ds got upset so looks like i have to put up with it. The problem here is that my dh starts getting excited about xmas after our aug summer hol has finished and is unable to contain himself round about now, peaks too early, basically.
