in thinking that if we have monthly income of £3700 net we could spare £120 to spend on a cleaner?

3+ years posting here, namechange for obvious reasons.

But, seriously, what do you think?

The income all comes from dh and I am sahm. We have two primary school age children. I truly hate cleaning and I do 95% of the food shopping and cooking and 100% of the laundry and 95% of all the other things that makes a family tick over.

Or am I being unreasonable?

Yes, but so does a Filipina maid working FT in Paris. She never travels for work though!

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 09:41

And what IS your definition of Senior?

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 09:46

I think a business owner is certainly senior in their business.
We need to define our terms. C and D level execs only? VP's?
Only in companies with a market cap over $X million?
What about non-execs or consultants?
Or should it be about what budget you are responsible for/number of staff?

Bonsoir · 03/11/2009 09:47

That's really hard to answer - there are so many jobs out there, and the responsibilities they entail can be so very different! But the main point about senior jobs is that they entail a lot of responsibilities towards the organisation/external parties that means that other (eg family) commitments have to take second place. Regular family commitments can often be outsourced (though whether you want to do this is another issue); the unpredictable ones are much harder to manage.

violethill · 03/11/2009 09:48

Oh please don't encourage her oojimaflip!

You just know the definition is going to be something that can't possibly encompass any of the interesting jobs other MNers do!

Do we really care? As long as my (Senior!) job provides stimulation, satistaction, a good salary and a pension, I really couldn't give a monkey's!

Bonsoir · 03/11/2009 09:48

My sister owns a business but she certainly isn't senior. That isn't a good definition.

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 09:48

You could argue the Filipina maid is on an extended business trip.

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 09:50

So what IS your definition? Debating without defining your terms is like...oh i don't know, something frustrating and futile.

Bonsoir · 03/11/2009 09:50

No you can't. The Filipina maid never moves from her place of employment, so she is never on a business trip. She is an overseas worker.

Bonsoir · 03/11/2009 09:52

I think I have already given an explanation! Things don't always fall into neat and easy categories (though some posters on this thread think they have all the answers to everything - I think they should probably expand their horizons!).

violethill · 03/11/2009 09:52

The main definition seems to be that family has to take second place!

Very bizarre!

My family come first with me, always have, no conflict of interest at all. Obviously kidding myself that I'm in a Senior position eh?! Shh don't tell anyone, they might cut my salary

independiente · 03/11/2009 09:52

Sorry, but if you can do basic maths, then you can work out if you can afford it for yourself.

If it's a moral question about being able to justify a cleaner... well, if you hate cleaning that much, and your income gives you the option to outsource, what's the problem?

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 09:53

Would you mind repeating it? There are 22 pages of this thread now ;)

(If anyone was looking for an on topic comment - yes, everyone should have a cleaner)

Bonsoir · 03/11/2009 09:54

It is a little odd, violethill, that someone as senior as you should be quite so scathing of others. Most senior positions require diplomacy and consideration.

violethill · 03/11/2009 09:56

Absolutely bonsoir - perhaps that's why you don't have one

Bonsoir · 03/11/2009 09:57

LOL, I educate people in senior positions!

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 09:58

AH - I think we have caught you in a contradiction Bonsoir! As most people running large enterprises are high functioning psychopaths, they don't really do diplomacy and consideration.

Bonsoir · 03/11/2009 09:59

No they really aren't! Some of them are very tired and some of them are very focused and most of them need to broaden their horizons more often than they do, but they mostly aren't psychopaths.

scottishmummy · 03/11/2009 10:01

if you can afford cleaner yes do it.

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 10:02

Sorry, I meant sociopaths.

violethill · 03/11/2009 10:04

Well of course Bonsoir! You rule the world don't you? Or your world in any case!

But seriously Bonsoir..... we all know from this and other threads that you are the Mistress of the Put Down. That's exactly what you started a couple of pages back, when you responded to the interesting dialogue about WOHP, those in senior positions, and those not, wasn't it? You had to chip in with your view that you wouldn't define any job as senior unless it basically means putting your family second and handing your life over to the company.

Why do you do that? What is your problem?

I really genuinely don't care whether you would define my role as senior or not. As long as my job is interesting and fulfilling and the pay keeps coming that'll do me. But the endless put downs are more than a little tiresome.

I'd agree that most senior positions require diplomacy and consideration. I'm not sure that people in these positions have the best reputation for these qualities though.

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 10:05

Dammit, I'm implicitly accepting your non-defintion. Curse you Bosoir!

ooojimaflip · 03/11/2009 10:06

Or Bonsoir even.
