To think bull terriers and other dangerous dogs should be banned from parks

I know they have to be walked somewhere but sick of seeing horrible savage dogs on the loose just looking like they're ready to maul a child. I stick to the dog free areas with DS but you occasionally get dogs in there and usually with owners too scary looking to question. And why of why do people let their kids near them or even thinking about having those types of dogs if you have young children?

Which bull terriers? Some, by nature have lovely temprements.

T'is not the dogs that are problem, campain against irresponsible/cruel owners. Stop targetting breeds that are only given bad press due to bad ownership. A poodle can be dangerous too in the wrong hands but we don't hear people complaining about those types of breeds being around children.

Fact - ANY dog can bite, regardless of breed.

Fact - Like dogs, not all people deserve the reputation which goes with their look/style of dress or hair etc. Yes, some people do look "too scary to question" (my best pal being one such). Sometimes however they are perfectly approachable and good-natured (my best pal being like this too).

People may allow their kids near dogs because they are not as prejudiced and ill-informed as you appear to be.

Regards from one with children, who has owned dogs all those DCs lives and for many years prior to their births, who owns a (if you'll believe the hype) "suspect, dangerous" breed and has done so in the past, who has fostered/rescued all types of dogs in the home with her DC, including SBTs, EBTs, GSDs, a Dobe, Rotties to name a few and who has REAL LIFE experience of dogs and a very good knowledge of the suffering caused to dogs by ignorance and prejudice.

Any dog can be nasty.
They are animals at the end of the day, and they can't tell us if they are feeling shite and to stay away from them. Personally I wouldn't trust any dog near children, as children can wind them up and make them nasty, especially if the dog isn't used to being near children.

I have to laugh at the scary owners comment. I am a miserable blooy cow and I probably look scary when I am out walking the dog, especially when it's cold (like today). My dogs (SBTs) are certainly friendlier than me

this is classic! if te dogs are in a marked 'no dogs zone' - then i would approach the owner and state that my dd/ds was scared - even if they werent.

i have 2 dogs that some ppl would probably be scared of, others love them to bits. i dont have them off leads near kids, or in a 'no dog' zone.

but i am ALLOWED these dogs, and for someone to just say what you have makes you look incredibly small minded and prejudice.

when I said "Personally I wouldn't trust any dog near children" I meant unsupervised.

i think the owners, more than the dogs are responsible for attacks and I have 2 v large dogs that could do something bad, but equally so could a pomeranian etc! I watch my children with the dogs, they have learnt to respect the dogs and vice versa and personally think this is the best way, not to make children scared of dogs, but to respect them.

i have had kids run over and throw themselves over my dogs to give them a cuddle and the parents stand back and watch, it always amazes me! its great when a kid approaches and asks if they can stroke the dogs, then i get them to sit and they are allowed to stroke their backs/necks.

education is the way forward, not culling all dogs!

Oh dear the OP made me nearly wet myself think I must try harder with pelvic floor muscle exercises this time round!!

BTW I let my child around my Staffordshire bull terrier because she is actually a nice sociable creature (unlike DS sometimes...)
and she quite enjoys the playtime together.

I would like to say i am not too keen on the breed myslef and i am guilty of avoiding the breed when out, and i do not let my kids stroke them either, but everyone is different my fear comes from my dog getting attacked by one, and living in a area, that they are EVERYWHERE, and owners belt them and they are owned by kids, and badly treated.

YABU. Our Staff was the most timid dog I have ever laid eyes on (to the point the she actually rolled on her back and tried to crawl under a Chihuahua, she was so submissive).

You are absolutely not* being unreasonable. The dangerous dogs (and their horrid owners) should be banned, period. From all public places.

The above comments regarding poodle and/or pomeranian etc. being capable doing damage similar to the nasties i.e. official 'dangerous dogs' is ludicrous and idiotic to put it mildly.

In dog attack cases that make the papers one can usually see a familiar pattern e.g badly bred animal,given little or training,spends a lot of time outside and not with the family, unfamiliar with children and has been left alone with the child.

How can you tell about their training when they are racing towards you? is there a special sign to look for?
