This Is one of her pieces.... a woman celebrating mentruation by wearing her period blood as her lipstick. I can get that. I have studied art and can see the logic and reasoning behind it.

But after coming across this article and reading the comments at the bottom, I really don't think many people understand and can't help thinking she took a small step back from what she was trying to acheive...

I don't see menstruation as something to be celebrated either, it's more of an irritation for me.

OK so it's not something to be ashamed of, or made to feel guilty about or told that we are unclean.... as certain religions/supposed cultures say.. it's a natural bodily function and all that.

However, it's not exactly the most pleasant aspect of being a woman, and there are some things that are best kept private.

These supposed 'shock' tactics always have the pole opposite effect. the artist's doing us no favours what so ever.

I don't think its done 'more damage than good' - at least there's a debate, and it's a debate about artistic merit.

I think the comments aid the debate and mean that she has won her argument (if her argument is being artistic and raising public consciousness about periods).

I think it is using shock value for the sake of it

Ok, menstruating may also be an irritation... but would it not be better for it to be more acceptable? so that when you have to go and buy some tampons/towels, you don't have to feel embarrassed as you queue at the checkout with them on the conveyor belt next to you?

I don't think it is nice to compare period blood, a symbol of fertility, to feaces which is a symbol of bad waste

I really don't think there's a need to celebrate it though. And I don't think it's viewed as unacceptable is it? I don't feel embarrassed at all buying sanitary products, and neither does DH when he buys them for me.

The thing worth celebrating if anything is the fact that you become a woman capable of child-bearing. I think most people would agree that not being expected to be married and pregnant by 14 any longer, is a good thing, so we have lost that link where starting to menstruate was the beginning of adulthood.

I think that part of the purpose of art is to challenge and disturb, to push the audience beyond the boundries of their comfort zone, to encourage them to question the status quo.

Art holds an important place in shaping our understanding of the world and the rules that we impose upon it and ourselves.

Take the Vagina Monolgues; theatres full of women chanting 'cunt'. This has become pretty celebrated now after initial mockery and disgust. And a very real dialogue opened about societys' relationship with and attitude towards female genetalia.

To dismiss it as 'yuk' is to miss the point, I think.

It's not about getting women to smear menstral blood on their lips, it's about opening a discussion of how menstruation is preceived and whether or not we should be happy with that perception.

I'd rather celebrate the female orgasm tbh, much more worthy of celebration IMO Although dp and I are pretty good at 'celebrating' it hehe. Periods though? no it's just a fact of life, a bodily function. No need to celebrate it at all.

Though, for the record, it's not a piece that I have much interest in seeing.
