To think that Ingrid berthon-Moine's art has probably done more damage than good in trying to get people to celebrate mentruation???

This Is one of her pieces.... a woman celebrating mentruation by wearing her period blood as her lipstick. I can get that. I have studied art and can see the logic and reasoning behind it.

But after coming across this article and reading the comments at the bottom, I really don't think many people understand and can't help thinking she took a small step back from what she was trying to acheive...

Would be quite interested to here what you have to say...

I think it's boring and annoying, probably because I regard menstruation as the sloughing of dead tissue from the inside of my uterus, rather than some kind of earthily mystical symbolic moon-goddess "journey" or some shit.

I'm not embarrassed of buying tampons and I don't know anyone who is. Menstrual artists seem to be under the impression that women don't talk about their periods because they're ashamed: actually, it's because there's really not a whole lot to say - "I've got blood gushing out of my vadgepiece today" isn't exactly a scintillating conversation starter.

But maybe I'm just oppressed.

Sassybeast · 19/10/2009 12:24

Cupcake - that's articulated exactly what I think but have never needed to articulate before. Dh will happily pick up whatever Tampax etc that I need and looked at me as if I was a loon when I asked if he minded

whoooooisasking · 19/10/2009 12:30

I totally agree with Cupcake.

And who feels embarrassed about buying tampons FGS?

Olifin · 19/10/2009 13:09

cupcake- you've said exactly what I wish I was articulate enough to say

It's like the mooncup thing; I think it's a brilliant product and, for me, has proved to be far better than the alternatives. But there are women who celebrate the mooncup as helping them to become more 'at one' with their periods; inspecting the blood and using it to feed their plants etc. and this attitude actually puts me off using it, which is a shame 'cause it's great.

I'm not at all ashamed or disgusted by my periods, (and nor is my OH), I just don't rate them as a topic of conversation.

cupcake123 · 19/10/2009 13:16

olifin - "using it to feed their plants"

I am WTFing in a BIG WAY at that. My face actually looks like this irl right now:
The mental image of a nice pot plant with... ugh... I just can't. And I thought Blood, Fish & Bone was gross.

MrsJiggle86 · 19/10/2009 13:17

this has reminded me why i dont think much of art

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 13:19

I always wanted to do a living art piece which would involve me with no knickers on under my skirt walking through Boots on the heaviest day of my period without a tampon/mooncup.

Would be interesting to see what people's reactions would be to something which is natural and yet which I have to buy products for.

Maybe now is the time?

MsSpentYouth · 19/10/2009 13:26
