Just done the school run. It's a two way road with one of the sides being blocked by parked cars and buses at school run time, so effectively one carriageway. Was my right of way, but I stopped to let one car down that had already started past the blocking cars.

This was followed by about ten other cars, only one of which acknowledged the fact that I had had to wait.

So when the eleventh started coming down the road, I though sod it and started to drive too. So they pulled over (in the very tight space) and knocked somebodies wing mirror off.

Was I BU to start driving even though my right of way.

(Should add this was all done at about 5mph so no danger to passing DCs)

YABU - if someone else is already in the space then you no longer have right of way.

I often wonder how this works and whether you're meant to just sit there for three years or drive headlong into them

YABU but I can sympathise. It is very annoying but funny how someone acknowledging your kindness can make all the difference.

although you lost your right of way, it isn't fair that you had to keep waiting and waiting.
he should have seen that you were there and it was your right of way until he drove into it.

this doesn't mean that him knocking off someone's mirror is your fault: he didn't have to go into the space that wasn't big enough for him.

That's the risk of being kind - people take advantage, especially when they dont know how long it will be before they get a chance to go through if they stop. You have to either wait for a gap or for the next kind person.

If te person coming the other way was a decent person they are now having a really shot day cos they have to replace a wing mirror and if they are an arse the person who had their wing morrior broken is now having a shit day as they returned to their car to find it broken.

stonethecrows, I've seen this happening several times too. DH decides to be nice and let the one person through and sure enough the next 20 cars decide to get in on the action!! Drives me fricking nuts, so seriously, imo, YANBU... in fact, surprised you waited for so long in the first place

I have this all the time on the school run in various permutations because of the tight and congested roads in my area.

If you had the right of way, it is your prerogative when you want to exercise it. If I was say car no. 6 in the convoy and I could see from where I was that you had already given way to 5, I might even stop there to let you through. If I did go through, would certainly acknowledge your giving way.

So if you made any signs that you were going to exercise your right of way, I would have stopped and even reversed if necessary.

Otherwise, it IS taking advantage.

By analogy, if you let someone in that is filtering from a side lane into the main road, it is the 'zipper' principle. The one giving way has no obligation to give way to more than one car.

If there is a long queue of cars, waiting for DC's how did they know you weren't parked?

Actually zip merging is not part of the highway code in the UK so they have no obligation to let any cars out.
