To be cross about this birthday card for my 1 year old?

Long story short, and receive a card for our first baby's birthday from a friend I haven't seen since he was born (we live at opposite ends of the country now) and she visited us. We've kept in touch on facebook, swapped photos etc, but she hardly knows the little man and how good a baby he has been for us.

The card is one of those customised mock-ups of a magazine cover, similar to OK etc. My "friend" has used photos I've sent her over the last twelve months to make it look like he is some sort of mini- George Best type, and it has really irked me for some reason.

Example- one photo shoes him covered in food, and the headline reads "That Banana Incident- XXX's full confession" . Then there is the one of me and dh looking knackered holding him, captioned "The Parents' Story- Our Nightly Hell" . Worse, they're is one of me holding him after birth with the headline "Bloodied But Unbowed- Once More Unto The Breech?"

My friend knows it is early days into my pregnancy with dc2, but I haven't told everyone yet. What's more, it feels like it's sort of wishing a difficult birth onto me IYSWIM?

If she comes her for the birthday party, which she has intimated she might, she'll expect to see it on the mantelpiece, but A) I don't want everyone to know I'm pregnant again, and B)It makes us look like we had a terrible time with ds, and he's a little darling, an angel compared to most. Do you think she's transferring her own experience of babies onto us? It feels like it!

So, am I being unreasonable to think she is being crass and insensitive? Should I try and fob her off about the party? I don't know how the card is going to go down with my mother especially, particularly the Banana bit.

ahhhhhhhh, got it. It was BOF.

hullygully · 30/09/2009 16:29

No, the best thing about MN is that people carry on regardless...

hullygully · 30/09/2009 16:30

Wannabe? Don't you have something you want to say to me?

ILoveStripeySocks · 30/09/2009 16:30

BOF i was seriously worried you had some mental health issues! So glad it was all made up!

becstarlitsea · 30/09/2009 16:30

x-posted BoF!

Glad that there isn't REALLY someone so deranged out there!

Although slightly unnerved that there is someone deranged enough to pretend to be that deranged...

Twas still funny though

SausageRocket · 30/09/2009 16:31

On a serious note, I bloody hate photo's of babies with food all over their faces a la hilarious BLW pictures. Especially spag bol. Gross.

Thank god this wasn't real I was actually worrying there was someone thinking this out there.
I did one of those cards on Moonpig as a thank you to my parents for catering our wedding it was fab.
I would laugh my socks off if I got one like the first birthday idea

BitOfFun · 30/09/2009 16:33

I am trying to get her to send me some pics- I've only got one from when he was born. I have recommended MN to her, so if they are all studio shots, I'll know I've been rumbled

Undercovamutha · 30/09/2009 16:36

YABU - sounds like your friend has put quite a bit of effort into the card. Even if wasn't my cup of tea, I would still be pleased that a friend had taken the time and thought.

Undercovamutha · 30/09/2009 16:37

Oops - just finished reading the thread! Tricked!

hullygully · 30/09/2009 16:37

Yes, I think you sound a bit ungrateful - maybe YOU'RE jealous of her clever idea!!!

BitOfFun · 30/09/2009 16:40

Loved thisisyesterday's links btw

motheringheights · 30/09/2009 16:42

Ha, typed way too slowly to keep up.

Very good, BOF.

zookeeper · 30/09/2009 16:49

I think it was nice of your friend to take the trouble to do a personalised card.

YABU and a bit mad

"It depends on how well you know her and how close she is to you. If i was to get a card like this from a non close friend / associate i'd laugh along in a 'harhar isn't motherhood tough' kind of way but tbh (and going against the grain here) if say my Mum or best friend sent me a card with unflattering piccies of my DS and making out he was more of a PITA than he actually was it would wind me up too. I'd either think they were jealous of him or that they had thought i'd moaned too much."

That was me three pages ago.....

I was the only one who thought it might be taken badly if sent by a close relative - and i really hate these threads. If done by a newby you get - "Fuck Off dear". If done by a well known poster you get "harhar hilarious, good one, you sure made me look like a prick"

BOF - you have become a parody of MN royalty. Do you sit at the right hand of Cod?

hullygully · 30/09/2009 16:51

Oh come on, it was only a joke. And a bloody good one. It doesn't make you a fool, your post was quite reasonable and sensitive.

PortBlacksandResident · 30/09/2009 16:55

....does a bit though.

ILoveStripeySocks · 30/09/2009 16:58

but its a bit like being in a pub with your mates/people you know - one of the springs a joke - you all laugh

a stranger walks in, and pull a joke. YOu all look at him liek he is a loon

just human nature i s'pose

PortBlacksandResident · 30/09/2009 17:01

Okay but now i'm lookng at the "My PIL called DS Fat, Fat, Fat in an email" thread - i'm thinking maybe that's a joke too.

pigletmania · 30/09/2009 17:03

The cards to me no way hint you are pregnant reading to much into it. The number of obscene cards my friends have given me over the years for my birthday. I think that most people think of their dcs as angles, i certainly do about mine especially when i see her asleep with her little eyelids closed and those long lashes of hers

PortBlacksandResident · 30/09/2009 17:04

And you are not all mates in a pub - most of us don't know each other.

Geocentric · 30/09/2009 17:05

Good one, I fell for it too (and I usually keep away from dodgy-looking treads!)

ConFuschias · 30/09/2009 17:07
