To think that mobile and internet service providers should prevent porn..

from being pushed onto most people, including teenagers and children, who use phones or internet?

They should do this either out of a sense of social responsibility or by government legislation.

It used to be that if people want porn, they have to seek it out, now it comes to you -uninvited. I worry about the sort of society my dd (not being sexist - she's an only) is growing up in, and the influence of these media "normalising" stuff (I won't go into details).

Is anybody out there doing anything about the situation?

The NSPCC have had a petition for this- may still be on their website www.nspcc.org.uk.

The difficult thing is from companies based outside the UK and therefore beyond legislation. Unless there's some kind of international law all nations have to sign up to, I'm not sure how you can achieve it.

No-one has ever pushed porn at me, and I spend hours online, with no parental controls or net nannies. Where's it coming from?

I think that you may find that someone with access to that computer is looking at porn, and therefore causing all sorts of pop-ups and adverts to appear 'uninvited.'

I have NEVER had this happen on my or my husbands laptop (non-porn watching dh!) but I guarantee that everytime someone moans about porn appearing on there screen there is a guilty looking dh / son somewhere... or even a dd come to that!

Porn does not appear out of no-where...

I'm not sure the mechanics of how it all works.

Have you never clicked on something that you thought was innocuous on, say, You Tube and found it not to be?

Do you not get spammed with dodgy emails?

As for mobile services - porn is not free on mobiles, it will be costing you. It is quite possible for someone to have signed up a mobile to get this stuff - try texting STOP every time you recieve a porn-text.

A 'mate' did this to my dh as a joke - cost him £200. I had to believe him as I know he is far too tight fisted to pay for porn lol! (back in the day...)

I get tons of spam on my work account (because I advertise my address) but it's very, very easy not to open any dodgy ones. Maybe my spam filter is better? It actually marks them SPAM and a cursory glance at the title/email address of the sender is enough to confirm.

Vodafone do, all handsets are barred from over 18 content (as I found yesterday after thinking mine was unlocked when I tried to access photobucket lol)

you have to request it to be unlocked and either present ID or call up with a credit card.

TBH - I am somewhat lost in the technology.

But I was alarmed that when I caught glimpses of a tv programme (can't even remember the exact name), when it seemed that these images were prevalent among teenagers (no idea how) - to the extent that they thought surgery enhanced breast were normal/desirable among other things.

DippyDino I don't think thats necessarily true...I look at porn now and then and I've never had porn pushed on me.
OldLady, my hotmail address is listed on quite a few sites for work, but I almost never receive spam mail. My yahoo account is used for websites (eg competitions or registering for a website) where you are asked to provide email details...this account receives tons and tons of spam.

I have looked at porn on the internet and I'm deeply shocked at saddened at what you can find just a few clicks away.

We will have parental controls on our pc before the dc are old enough to start googling stuff by themselves.

But will every pc they go near whilst still underage have the same levels of security??

I doubt it .

I truly feel sullied and tainted by some of the things I have seen on the pc sitting in my own front room.

I honestly don't understand how they can threaten to cut you off for pirating music films etc, but we can't rid the net of the kiddy porn etc.... is it cos there is too much money in that filth? Can't ISPs tell what shite is being sent around/uploaded/downloaded?

If China can block sites, why can't we, as supposedly civilised countries block the really evil stuff.

Please don't tell me that stuff falls under freedom of ruddy speech?

Come on guys...we are too busy trying to stop all the teenagers from file sharing so that poor Madonna and U2 don't suffer financial hardship!!

It really winds me up that they are considering a system which can cut off the internet connection for people who file share...but can not stop child pornography etc etc by the same means...in fact it makes me really mad...and all because money and possessions mean far more to us than the sanctity of human life...

Off for a drink now...

An old thread from over 3 years ago, which I thought I should bump after reading the threads about sexual bullying at school and effect of porn on society....some of the original replies now just seem (to me) to be very naive and lack judgement.

I was reading about looking after goldfish the other day for my dd and a porn site popped up!
They do pop up out of nowhere, it is apparent.

groundhog (if still here) a poster, empusa, wrote a brilliant post on another thread about why the mythical "pornBgone" button just doesn't work. I'll link it later if no-one beats me to it.

And your DCs will have access to devices with no filters at some points, so the answer is education, not technology. Bit like the anti-drugs message, really.

  1. UK mobile phone services are obliged to filters out adult content unless the contract holder explicitly opts to allow it.

  2. There are several UK internet service providers that offer adult content filtering if you want it.

  3. There are adult content filtering services available in a number of other ways (eg opendns, Microsoft family safety centre, bluecoat etc) for those who are interested.

  4. There is loads of information available online and in local libraries etc about safe Web use.
