To think that mobile and internet service providers should prevent porn..

from being pushed onto most people, including teenagers and children, who use phones or internet?

They should do this either out of a sense of social responsibility or by government legislation.

It used to be that if people want porn, they have to seek it out, now it comes to you -uninvited. I worry about the sort of society my dd (not being sexist - she's an only) is growing up in, and the influence of these media "normalising" stuff (I won't go into details).

Is anybody out there doing anything about the situation?

This is the thread, and empusa's 'unicorn' post is at Sun 02-Sep-12 00:43:50, and there is another good one at Sun 02-Sep-12 23:42:55.

There may be proposals to cut off internet connection from people who file share but rather like the one to keep records of all internet communications these are thought up by people who clearly have no idea of how the internet works and are quite frankly laughable.

Internet control are a sledgehammer to crack a nut really as there is no reliable automated method of telling what is pornographic, and that is assuming everyone could agree in the first place. Think of the upset caused by Facebook blocking pictures of breastfeeding.

An of course parental controls are so easy to get around if my dd can't work it out by the time she is 12 I will think something has gone terribly wrong in her IT education.

Edith is right here, education is the answer, I am sorry to say that technology can't solve this info you.

This has been discussed at length quite a few times since 2009.

See here or here for example.

One of the clearest explanations I read about why it won't work was Kaloki's here

I never get unsolicited porn popups, emails or anything. I have a spammy hotmail account that is widely available online. I get a lot of viagra ads and banking scams in my spam folder but no porn.

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 13/10/2012 09:37

How do they push porn onto children or teenagers? I've never had any issues with porn pop-ups or anything like that.

Snorbs already covered most of it.

As to what she can access on the internet, it's your duty to parent your child and make sure she isn't accessing explicit materials not the phone provider/internet providers. Get a proper filter set up or don't let her use the internet unsupervised.

Censorship is always wrong.

Use safe browsing etc if you don't want to see it.

Don't ask a large company to do it for you. Take control of your own viewing.

Stop using ignorance as an excuse to see things you don't want to see.l

I'm sorry op but this is something you have to do for yourself. No service provider can decide what is appropriate for every age and intellect. That's your job.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 13/10/2012 10:14

And, three years down the line, I'm still not having porn pushed at me.

Teenagers (and sometimes younger) actively look for porn online, and it's simply curiosity that drives them. I agree it's damaging, I agree they should be shielded, but that's a parental job.

Perhaps we should outlaw ownership/use of smartphones for the under 18s? They really don't need anything fancier than a handset that does calls and texts, no matter what they may claim.

Proudnscary · 13/10/2012 10:18

I agree in sort of fairyland theory - I wish internet porn didn't exist as I'm afraid of how it warps young minds and is so readily accessible. Especially porn with fake boobed, shaven fannied women bent into unfeasible positions and pretending to enjoy it (probably trafficked girls too Sad).

But in reality, no it's not workable, it's not feasible, I don't agree with censorship and yes it's down to parents.

pigletmania · 13/10/2012 10:32

YANBU regarding child porn, Yabvu regarding adult porn. I spend ages on the net and have never had porn forced upon me, where is it? Though I would nt like my children viewing porn, online porn viewing is no different to the play girl/boy mags we got as teenagers 20 years ago
