Are you saying if you weren't a mother you would have a different opinion?

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:40

I dunno
like when a neighbour of my parents died and dad was incandesscent when someone said

" its so bad - especially at xmas time"
she was 94 and a hermit

its AQLWAYS sad when someoen dies

Yeah but no one has actually ever said that particular phrase have they?

And I say that as a mother...

HigherThanAWombat · 14/09/2009 13:40

You're not alone. Bill Bailey hates it too.

DemmitGel · 14/09/2009 13:42

Yes ok for actual DEATH but it's usually

as a mother I feel for x whose kid is getting into drugs (e.g.)

or whatever and in that context it can make a difference if you are a mum. As a dog owner I sympathise MORE with someone whose dog dies. Non-doggy types don't really sympathise much.

BelleWatling · 14/09/2009 13:45

I know what you mean NoahAmin. Like you wouldn't realise how tragedies that affect children are unspeakable unless you have had children yourself. Like you have no compassion or empathy until you have spawned.

I hate this too. It means 'as a mother, my opinion trumps yours and I have the moral high ground'

Bill Bailey has a bit of a routine about it - I think based on Rosie O'Donnell saying 'as a mother I think 9/11 was awful' (or something to that effect.)

It might not have been Bill Bailey or Rosie O'Donnell but as a mother I do not have time to google.

BelleWatling · 14/09/2009 13:46

Oh cross-posted HTAW.

CrackWhoretoPaulDacre · 14/09/2009 13:47

As a mother, I find you all flippant and uncaring.

Snurk.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 13:51

its very Jeremy Vine

" as a mother i dont go to e coli ridden sand pits"

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 14/09/2009 14:02

As a mother I find I get more joy from wearing lycra hot pants than my childfree friends

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 14:03

lol
add to that " as a mother I like wearing sweaty lycra hotpants"

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 14/09/2009 14:04

As a mother I like wearing sweaty lycra hotpants with weetabix remnants wiped down them and used tissues in the pocket

TrillianAstra · 14/09/2009 14:04

As a non-mother I think you're all over-reacting and emotional.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 14:07

as a mother I think i should go and wash the kitchen floor and make ds a packed lunch tea

( cricket fgs can you BELIVE it)

BalloonSlayer · 14/09/2009 14:15

"Yeah but no one has actually ever said that particular phrase have they?"

The Queen has used "as a mother" about Dunblane and "as a Grandmother" about Diana.

OrmIrian · 14/09/2009 14:18

Don't you know that motherhood conveys sainthood noah? So anything that you utter as a mother is, in fact, much much more important than anything you utter as a mere normal woman.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 14:18

like in news reports

" diana, a mother of two"
kidn of thing

OP posts:
VeeEsss · 14/09/2009 14:20

I prefer 'As amother' to the all-knowing-any-argument-winning 'Do you have children?'

BalloonSlayer · 14/09/2009 14:21

They say that about men too.

"Skinhead Thugg was arrested on suspicion of assault yesterday. Thugg, a father of one, has previous convictions for..."

and so on.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 14:22

defence solicitor once told me about the usage of " Wayne isa family man"

( ie he has 20 kids littered around by diffo women)

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 14/09/2009 14:25

I love how the media think that spawning kids is an indicator of inner saintliness.

So 'yob kills father of two' etc. The yob may well have spawned some kids too but he's a yob, not a 'father'.

As for women whose own kids have managed to spawn, well, she's basically untouchable.

'Yobs steal grandmother's handbag' etc. As if there should be extra punishment for crimes against those who have had a kid and their kid has had a kid.

'50 year old woman' doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 14/09/2009 14:25

Annabel Karmel always says it before she starts spouting her rubbish useful information.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 14/09/2009 14:26

YANBU. I hate it too. But then again I have found that "as a mother" I have much less tolerance for some things than before.

nighbynight · 14/09/2009 14:35

"As a mother, I think that Alan Partridge, for example, is a twat."

Hmm. I quite like that sentence actually.

NoahAmin · 14/09/2009 14:41

me too
its liek that doctor who reckons she is 38 ( jarvis?) being " attacked"
for everything
