It's not RIGHT, is it?

well , if teachers have no idea why schools use comic sans, then it's high time for a review.

thelollipoplady · 11/09/2009 22:51

Comic Sans just isn't...

Why can't the world just use Helvetica and be done with it.

Pikelit · 11/09/2009 22:52

It is an abomination! Although I can (just about) understand why schools think it is usefu;. Any adult who, of their own volition, chooses Comic Sans has ishoos. As well as 250 cuddly toys and hairslides.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/09/2009 22:52

How can you read Monotype Corsiva? Can you imagine aq densely typed document with that, it would make your eyes ache!

jennifersofia · 11/09/2009 22:53

I am a primary teacher and dh is a graphic designer, and we both think YANBU! I used sassoon infant (had it at home, but not at school) when teaching Y1, but now in Y4 don't worry so much about using other fonts.

catinthehat2 · 11/09/2009 22:54

for GetorfMoiLand

You dissed Times New Roman. I have written your name down in my notebook that all old farts carry.

ThingOne. Oh yeah? Yeah? Who says? Prove it!

Feenie · 11/09/2009 22:54

dogonpoints, lots of teachers have given reasons why we use it...

Pikelit · 11/09/2009 22:54

Farkin' fingers! Usefu;' is, of course, an eejit's intention to type "useful".

EyeballsintheSky · 11/09/2009 22:55

I know and indeed it did, hence my squint! That got on my tits after a while though too.

cherryblossoms · 11/09/2009 23:00

Sans serifs for headlines, serifs for body of text - or your eyes will hurt!

cochin fan here.

yama · 11/09/2009 23:04

Caz10 - I loved Sassoon. Everything I had ever created was on Sassoon. I went off on maternity leave (4 years ago) and when I came back all my materials were gobbledegook.

Where did Sassoon go?

dogonpoints · 11/09/2009 23:06

well, two of you have, feenie

BuckRogers · 11/09/2009 23:09

Why do we use it then, dogonpoints?

stripeywoollenhat · 11/09/2009 23:11

yab slightly u. it's only a font.

though i hate arial.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/09/2009 23:16

PSML cat. Bet you have a special old fart pencil as well

NotanOtter · 11/09/2009 23:20

cherryblossoms · 11/09/2009 23:22

* Preciousness alert *

Wish someone would buy me this
sigh

* Over *

Nice choices Eyeballs.

Dh went to see a film about Helvetica the other day.

Yabu - comic sans is wrong. Why would anyone (other than teachers, I suppose,) want to do that?

BettySuarez · 11/09/2009 23:23

Morningpaper - what a scream. You are not be unreasonable at all. And if you don't believe me, ask the guy that designs my websites for me. I know that web designers are anal by nature but his vilification of comic sans and those who use it (teachers included - soz!)was quite something.

I have an email from him somewhere containing a comic sans related rant.....

isittooearlyforgin · 11/09/2009 23:26

wow! never knew comic sans provoked such strong emotions! As for Winnie the Pooh - i had my suspicions

cherryblossoms · 11/09/2009 23:27

Aagh! I cannot type!

YANBU - NNN.

BettySuarez · 11/09/2009 23:29

Ok, I have found said email. MorningPaper - you have met your soul mate I think!

Thanks for that. I will take what is there and create a template which everyone can build on. I would suggest you be quite hard with them in terms of what can and cannot be used. For example, Comic Sans should NEVER, NEVER be used on pain of death - a little harsh maybe, but it really is a scourge and says completely the wrong things. It has become one of those fonts that newsletters done at home use to make things look 'friendly and approachable'. Instead it is used so often that it has now become ubiquitously associated with the "homemade" design approach. It makes the company look completely unprofessional. I would suggest we do it all in Ariel. No one can complain about not having it. I don't love it, but at least it is a take on Helvetica which is a beautifully crafted typeface. Ariel was designed by Microsoft to be a version of helvetica that reads better on screen - mute an arguable, but at least it has an elegance to it.

BettySuarez · 11/09/2009 23:31

That large paragraph was aquote from my designer btw - should have added quote marks!

cherryblossoms · 11/09/2009 23:31

That is funny.

Bless. He worships at the shrine of Helvetica.

MermaidSpam · 11/09/2009 23:41

Hee hee!

BuckRogers · 11/09/2009 23:46

But Betty, he is coming very much from a company POV. What would he suggest an infant teacher use instead? Find me a range of fonts which are clear and recognisable to a child just learning to read and which do not use a 'curly a' ..like so and I'll happily give them a go.
