Genuinely don't know what they are for...they didn't cover it in parenting class!

Anyone?

Well this has been highly informative

Was trying to be agnostic when I started the thread, given that I found the signs irritating but assumed there must be a good reason for them.

But perhaps I was sucked in by their "official" appearance (yellow and black/ capital letters = very important/no jokes allowed/sold by the highly moral and caring Mothercare/Halfords) Obviously knew that the princess ones were a piss take, but don't like those for the same reason I don't like slogan T-shirts (as mentioned).

So they don't have a serious purpose.

My neighbour has a sign that reads "For safety reasons, the closer you get the slower I will go." Perhaps this is more useful?

I rather doubt that even in the 80's that emergency services would rely solely on a 4 inch sticker which is attached to an easily shatterable surface, in order to determine if a child is present or not.

If it's so important then why don't they request the same for buildings in the event of fires?

LadyThompson · 10/09/2009 12:08

They are for twonks and are possibly slightly dangerous.

Ditch and burn.

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 10/09/2009 12:10

eleanora that's what I always think!

I hated the signs because I thought if someone's going to drive up your arse they don't care whether you have a baby on board or not.

Then I got pregnant, got an 'expectant mum on board' one because I was terrified of driving when I was pregnant, PFB and all that. Then people purposely started driving like twats- someone tried to run me off the road , chased me up a country lane and overtook me yelling and screaming. I was actually driving like a normal human being. The sign must have just grated on then.

I have one of those funky baby on board signs now and if someone drives up my arse I purposely slow down as a 'fuck off my baby comes first, arsehole'.

Dog and board and things like that are just bloody stupid, dogs are not important.

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 12:18

The 'expectant mother on board' stickers seem even more pointless to me. What are they supposed to do?

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 12:20

I generally don't see the point of having any stickers on one's car whether they're 'baby on board' or 'I've been to Alton Towers'.

lovechoc · 10/09/2009 12:58

I just think that these signs are irritating and it is trivial, but it's all these trivial things that build up and really get on your nerves as time goes by.

I can't stand them and DH and myself make fun of cars with these stupid signs every time we see them when out and about. So what if someone has a baby, or a child, or a granny. Big deal. It's not breaking news. GRRRR.

Time for a cuppa...

JGU0204 · 10/09/2009 13:06

I think it's a bit harsh to state that those who have them are 'smug'.

I don't have one and wouldn't particularly want one, but why can't people have them just for being proud that they have a son / daughter etc.. There doesn't have to be any smugness in it at all!

And why isn't a dog important, it maybe isn't to you, but to some people they are!

NewbeeMummy · 10/09/2009 13:13

I'm in two minds about them, part of me thinks from the emergency service PoV it does make sense, slthough surely the fact that a car has a car seat in it is a fairly good indication that they should be looking for a baby, that said do we all remove our car seats when Baby isn't traveling with us, not really, nor would I remember to stick it up and take it down everytime I went some where depending on whether DS was in the car.

Although whole heartedly agree, I cannot stand the little prince/princess/minx whatever else you wish to display.

Part of me would hope that by displaying a baby on board sign, that drivers wouldn't tailgate and hopefully expect the unexpected, but then again, I would like to think that you shouldn't need a baby on board sign for that, and people should just be respectful of every one when driving... Ok Ok, I know that's a dream but it would be nice

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 10/09/2009 13:17

Surely driver, passenger, people in back, middle aged healthy man on board stickers would be invented before 'dog on board'? It's not even human! Next it'll be 'shopping on board'

LadyThompson · 10/09/2009 13:23

But the emergency services think they are a menace. That's a good enough reason not to have one, no?

libbyssister · 10/09/2009 13:35

Complete waste of time imo. Surely the child/baby seats in a vehicle would alert emergency services to the fact there might be a child involved. And I HATE the Princess/Future Tennis Champ ones, bleurgh.

The only one that made me smile the other day was the one that said 'Mother-in-law in boot'

undercoverelephant · 10/09/2009 13:38

TotallyAndUtterly!

I like "driver on board" ! That would be novel.

Anonanonuk · 10/09/2009 13:44

Before having children I thought 'Baby on board' etc signs were ridiculous. However I now have one but it is different to others that you see and is for a different reason - We have a disabled child and people used to park so close to the car that we would sometimes have problems getting our child out of the car and into her pushchair or wheelchair.

I found someone who sells a 'Baby on board'-style sign but the sign says instead 'Please leave 2 metres for my child's wheelchair. Thank you' and has arrows pointing left and right and a picture of a person in a wheelchair. It has been SO useful as it has stopped most people parking close to us!

mummytotwins · 10/09/2009 14:02

We have a normal yellow and black twins on board sign mainly so people dont park up my arse on the streets or really close as I need to get a toddler out either side of the car and a huge double buggy out of my boot. TBH I couldnt give a toss if you think Im smug, I think your judgemental!

undercoverelephant · 10/09/2009 14:06

Anon, your sign has a very specific point - and tells (or asks) other drivers to do something totally reasonable.
My point was that ordinary baby on board stickers leave other drivers thinking "baby on board - what do you want me to say/do?"

WidowWadman · 10/09/2009 14:08

"I have one of those funky baby on board signs now and if someone drives up my arse I purposely slow down as a 'fuck off my baby comes first, arsehole'."

By doing that you can actually cause accidents, too. I'm not defending any tailgaters, hate them myself, but purposely slowing down is not the right answer and just leads to aggravation and even more stupid behaviour.

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 14:14

Your sticker is completely different Anon. It actually has a purpose and an important one at that.

spicemonster · 10/09/2009 14:40

mummytotwins - would make no difference whatsoever to how I parked behind/beside you I'm afraid.

spicemonster · 10/09/2009 14:42

And I'm not saying that to be a bitch, it just really wouldn't impact on my consciousness in that way. And I have a toddler.
