Genuinely don't know what they are for...they didn't cover it in parenting class!

Anyone?

undercoverelephant · 09/09/2009 17:54

Like slogan T-shirts that say "daddy's little angel"

i think they are there only to infuriate me because they really piss me off.
in fact there is no good reason for them. the explanation about emergency services is a myth.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 09/09/2009 18:08

My understanding is to let the emergency services know there is a child in the car, and if so, what side that child is likely to be sitting, in the case of an accident.

Hence 'baby/toddler/child on board'.

I agree the 'daddys little angel on board' etc is a bit much and some of the more crass ones do really wind me up. Detracts from the purpose, which is to let people know important information.

LovelyLulu · 09/09/2009 18:10

I agree with southeastastra, so that people don't tailgate, they could be less inclined to do so with the sign.

roughtrade · 09/09/2009 18:13

Someone I know has ones with her kids names on which I thought was odd.

WebDude · 09/09/2009 19:14

Far from thinking they identify the driver as being some type of idiot, it just makes me think that there may be some greater chance of an emergency stop, and drivers close enough to have seen the notice should allow some extra space, avoiding the possibility of a crash.

Some might say 'erratic driving' some might even suggest the driver could easily be distracted. I'm just a humble non-driver, so wouldn't dare make malicious remarks, and to be honest, keep my wits about me, whoever the driver is, especially within supermarket car parks (where all logic, and ability to signal, seems to be forgotten).

paisleyleaf · 09/09/2009 20:08

I feel a bit sad for a little boy I know who has one that says 'naught person on board'

DailyFail · 09/09/2009 20:09

This should explain it a bit better..

I have to say, I hate the 'Bitch on Board' ones.

AvrilH · 09/09/2009 20:18

My neighbour has a toddler and a sign proclaiming "little minx on board"

Shellseeker · 09/09/2009 20:20

Maybe they could double up as a pass for the parent & toddler spaces at the supermarket?

lovechoc · 09/09/2009 20:20

putting a sign up in your back window won't stop people driving like maniacs behind you. if people genuinely buy into this then they seriously need their heads examined

YANBU. They are utterly pointless tat.

treacletart · 09/09/2009 20:23

The only logical reason for them is to warn other drivers of potentially hazardous driving from a harrassed parent.

Alarielle · 09/09/2009 20:23

I can't stand them in any form. Me and DH have a laugh trying to think up ones that are more stupid such as 'potential fertilised egg on board'.

I don't give a fuck if you have kids it won't change my driving (I am a good driver ) unless you have a 'princess on board' one

hf128219 · 09/09/2009 20:25

They are just common. IMO.

bronze · 09/09/2009 20:31

my friend has one that says ex husband in boot

funny first time

Firawla · 09/09/2009 20:32

when they were handed out free @ baby show they said it was due to that emergency services reason, were handing out "mum to be on board" ones iirc

oneopinionatedmother · 09/09/2009 20:35

YANBU.

the car seats block enough of the view - why pbscure more of it?

pigletmania · 09/09/2009 20:45

I am not keen on them, but i think that they are needed so that in an emergency the ES know that there is a child on board and what side they are on. That is the only reason i can thinm of.

onebatmother · 09/09/2009 20:46

oneopinionatedmother - could you check your email? Thanks!

Squishabelle · 09/09/2009 20:46

Cannot see the point of them. I would think they would be irrelevant to the emergency services - they dont need some stupid sign in the back of a car to enable them to do their jobs.

lovechoc · 09/09/2009 20:48

blah blah emergency services...doubt it. they check everyone's car regardless of whether there's a 'baby on board' sign on the back windscreen or not. and usually a child's car seat is a pure give-away that there's a baby/child in the car

what did the world do without 'baby on board' signs, I wonder...

LovelyTinOfSpam · 09/09/2009 20:53

Agree that only reason I can see is like L-plates - beware of potential crappo driving as driver may be distracted by extreme wailing/having stuff lobbed at them/be having to open and close the windows over and over again/whathaveyou.

lazyemma · 09/09/2009 21:39

Jesus! Some of you really need to learn to read other people's posts apart from your own - several people have said that the emergency services thing is a MYTH, please look at the snopes link that DailyFail kindly posted.

For myself, I assume that anyone with a Baby On Board/Princess On Board/Cheeky Monkey On Board/ sign is an idiot. That aside, I keep the same cautious distance from them as I do from any other car on the road: every other driver is a potentially dangerous idiot in my book.

Thunderduck · 09/09/2009 21:41

Yes it's a myth that they are there to aid the emergency services and yes they are pointless and annoying.
