Genuinely don't know what they are for...they didn't cover it in parenting class!

Anyone?

Am I being naive? I would expect the emergency services to check the vehicle to make sure that they had all the passengers - window sticker or not...?? Is that unreasonable - I mean I know babies are smaller but you would think that the car seat would give it away? I think they are slightly ridiculous especially the ' princess on board' etc bit like the naff 'my other care is a porche' stickers

emmarussell · 09/09/2009 22:53

I detest these signs in cars. I hated them before I had kids and I still hate them now I have two little boys! It makes me want to tailgate someone when I see one rather than be careful around them (clearly, I would not do this I hasten to add!) They represent self-satisfied parents saying "look at me I have kids". So what?! They do not make you safer on the road, or help in an accident. It is simply sentimental parents wanted to tell everyone they have kids.

Phew I feel better after that rant! Thank you.

hf128219 · 09/09/2009 22:57

So the parents might as well be saying I had a shag 9 months/4 years ago and I have a sprog?

Flibbertyjibbet · 09/09/2009 23:08

What rubbish about them being to alert emergency services that there is a baby on board. If that were true you'd have two for twins, several in each window for some families in fact...

Ben Elton many years ago said he thought the drivers who had them were 'flaunting their fertility'.

Iirc, in the late 70's or 80's they were featured on Thats Life with Esther Rantzen saying they were good for alterting tailgating drivers that there was a child in the back of the car who would be squashed by a tailgater in the event of an accident.

Me, I've never felt the need for one, though dp did buy me one that said 'grumpy person on board' before we had the dc's!

hf128219 · 09/09/2009 23:12

So there really is no point? A proper reason?

southeastastra · 09/09/2009 23:17

i would like a mil on board sign, so other drivers would be aware i could suddenly act irrationally

ElectricElephant · 09/09/2009 23:20

it's nothing to do with that! In my case, I want people to know there is a sprog on board - lets them know that I may be tired/distracted whatever, and they may pay more care

Nothing smug about it, and I'm definitely not trying to piss off any TTCers.

There is no official reason for them, but there is a definite difference in incidence of tailgaiting when I do have it in. Don't care if it pisses you all off, it makes a difference to me

~pokes tongue~

so ner.

2rebecca · 09/09/2009 23:23

They advertise you're proud of your fertility, are a crap driver and like cutesy signs.

ElectricElephant · 09/09/2009 23:31

AAAAAAAAAAAARGGHH

southeastastra · 09/09/2009 23:35

they're harmless, but babe on board in pink makes me want to tailgate

WebDude · 09/09/2009 23:47

Seeing the number of negative comments, I'm half minded to suggest 'grumpy person on board' should be issued to the majority of posters on this thread!

Deeeja · 09/09/2009 23:52

If it stops people tailgating me, cutting in at roundabouts, almost hitting the side of car , trying to race me, playing some stupid game of dare with me on a narrow road with my kids in the car, then I will get one.
I have privacy glass, because I sometimes have to change my autistic son in the car, so I think it is because they can not see that I have dcs with me.
If it makes a difference then I would gladly get one.
But I doubt it somehow, selfish twat on roads generally don't give a stuff.

spicemonster · 09/09/2009 23:53

I loathe most other drivers, I just hate people with baby/princess/next lord of arsenal signs slightly more than the rest of you. I might drive slightly more defensively around you because I think you are a bit dim but it isn't because I'm worried about injuring your progeny.

OldieButGoldie · 09/09/2009 23:56

If you are too tired or distracted to be on the road then YOU SHOULDN'T BE ON THE ROAD!

Don't rely on a naff sign to keep you (and your kids) safe

southeastastra · 09/09/2009 23:59

lol oldie

i think in reality, they just make people drive sligthly nearer to you to read the damn things

Clary · 10/09/2009 00:00

The signs really annoy me. They are so insulting in their presumption that, were they not there, I would happily drive into the back of the car in front

In fact the reason I don't tailgate people is because I have no wish to front-end my car - whether or not they have a baby in the back of theirs!

Deeeja · 10/09/2009 00:01

Just because I have children, does not mean that I am too tired to be on the road, or distracted.
Most people drive like idiots where I live, and they often come right for me, possibly because I drive a people carrier.
FFS, why would I have an mpv if I didn't have children.
I drive safely, and I am sick of idiots on the roads. They are mostly men, taxi drivers and couriers.

Deeeja · 10/09/2009 00:05

I will tell you what really pisses me off, is that Asian men just expect me to let them cut in, because I am an Asian female. That really gets my rag. So they get angry and try to force their way in and nearly hit me. GRRRR!
And on a Friday afternoon, I suspect alot of drivers have been drinking, that is when I see the worst driving.

Deeeja · 10/09/2009 00:06

Sorry have gone completely off topic.
As you were.

OldieButGoldie · 10/09/2009 00:08

Just ate a bowl of porridge, 3 slices of toast with orange marmalade, coffee, and a boiled egg. Off to the office.

Where will this signage end?

southeastastra · 10/09/2009 00:09

deeja, just look forward and drive lol don't make eye contact with anyone!

Prinpo · 10/09/2009 00:32

I've seen one, completely straight looking black and yellow, that says "Baby I'm Bored". I'm tempted.

Pikelit · 10/09/2009 00:45

I still think they are poncy, no matter the alleged explanations about helping the emergency services. I dislike any sort of "look what I've got!" sort of sign though. Including the ones that suggest you are giving house room to a dog that will disembowel anyone who is rash enough to open the front gate.

FatFree · 10/09/2009 00:56

Worst one i have seen was personalised for twins with a pink half with the girls name and a blue half for the boy...puke inducing!

Pikelit · 10/09/2009 00:59

Ewwwwwwww! That is truly vile!
